Please , please don't get a puppy this young ... I cringe when new puppy owners tell me that their dog is 4 or 5 weeks old . I have found a strong correlation between dogs that are placed so young and those that develop reactivity issues ... dogs need their littermates and momma for at least 8 weeks , and in the case of especially smaller breeds longer .

Do you have a pushy pup problem? Don’t worry, you are not alone! Pushy dogs quickly become a nuisance, and some even end up in the shelter because of their bad behavior. However, there is no reason why you can’t reform your pushy dog and live happily ever after.

Dogs are opportunists, meaning they are going to do what works for them. That’s why once your dog has gotten food from the table once, they are suddenly at the table every time you eat. It worked once, it might work again.

Many dogs learn pushy behaviors because we inadvertently reinforce them, which makes the behavior stronger. For example, your dog jumps up on you as a tiny puppy and you pick him up or pet him. Soon, you have a 100-pound monster leaping at you as you try and enter your house. Or, a guest sneaks a scrap of food to your dog at the table and now your dog is begging at every meal.

Other pushy behaviors include:
Thrusting toys at you until you play with them
Pawing at you for attention
Barking at you for attention, play, etc.

Please, please don't get a puppy this young ... I cringe when new puppy owners tell me that their dog is 4 or 5 weeks old. I have found a strong correlation between dogs that are placed so young and those that develop reactivity issues ... dogs need their littermates and momma for at least 8 weeks, and in the case of especially smaller breeds longer.

When your own dog growls at you it can feel awful. But try not to take it personally, it is the only way he has of telling you that something is making him uncomfortable or nervous. Aggression is a normal canine behaviour. It is normal in all animals. Dogs use aggression to defend themselves from a perceived threat and to protect their valued resources. They also use aggression when they are fearful to try to get the thing that scares them to move away.

Most dogs give off warning signals before they actually bite. These warning signals are good. The dog is telling the person that he feels uncomfortable and to please back away. Respect this warning and maintain distance. It is very, very important not to punish a dog for giving a warning signal.

Dogs punished for growling or other warning signals may not growl next time. Instead they may go directly to a bite.

Common warning signals include: Hard eye, growling, snarling, snapping and biting. Dogs with food guarding issues may also exhibit the following warning signals: Cessation of eating (freeze) and accelerated eating in addition to the above.

The 3 most common reasons for a dog to show aggression towards family members are:

Illness and /or pain.
Resource Guarding.
Body Handling Issues.

Sit
Holding one finger pointed up is a great way to teach a dog to sit. While working on this trick, make sure to bring your arm from its natural position limp at your side up and into this position to signify the command.

Down
Use the word "down" for encouraging your pup to lie down and "off," and accompany this word with a palm flat and facing the ground. If he's still not getting it from this signal alone, move your palm down toward the floor to show him where to go.

Come
C'mere! The natural curling of a finger used to encourage kids to come is the same way to call a dog. While you can surely use several fingers in this motion, it can get distracting for a dog who's learning other signals that involve the whole hand. Stick with using the pointer finger to gesture him over.

Stay
Like a crossing guard would show at intersections, holding a hand with the palm facing out and forward means stop or "stay." Try alternating this signal with the "come" gesture for an impromptu red light/green light training game.

Bring It
In addition to giving the verbal command, place your hand at doggie eye level with palm facing the pooch, which gives you the perfect placement to then receive the item as he learns to let it go right in your hand
