Dog care and breeding are proving to be big business in the bustling Shenzhen municipality of China. According to unofficial data from the city government, in 2010, about 80,000 puppies were bred and sold in Shenzhen. Dog trade on a similarly stunning scale, albeit on a slightly smaller scale, was also carried out in Guangzhou in Guangdong province, until a clampdown led by animal rights groups.
China has a long history of dog-meat consumption, but the increasingly popular dog meat as well as dog breeding industries have prompted tougher regulation by animal protection groups. As a result, dog meat consumption has declined sharply.
Earlier this year, animal rights groups tracked down the dogs of a Shanghai dog meat trader called Lee. In what became a publicity stunt, a representative of the animal rights group Dog Freedom Alliance was taken into police custody in connection with the case.
