Please just don't
Every year the rawhides come out and people who don't understand, buy them for their beloved dogs.
Just don't.
We strive to provide the best for our furry friends, but sometimes what seems like a harmless treat can hide potential dangers. There have been documented cases of dogs with pieces of rawhide lodged in their windpipe, stomach, or intestines, creating choking hazards and an intestinal blockage, gastrointestinal distress, such as vomiting or diarrhea, can occur if rawhide irritates the digestive tract . Since rawhide is a byproduct of leather, some items pose a significant challenge to a dog’s digestive system when it comes to breaking down.
During the manufacturing process, rawhide is often soaked in a cocktail of chemicals to preserve it and enhance its flavor. These chemicals can include formaldehyde or chromium salts, hydrogen peroxide and bleach, which may pose risks to adult dogs and young puppies alike.
Safer alternatives like completely digestible Himalayan yak chews, dehydrated sweet potato chews, or any of the all meat jerky treats would be much better than rawhide.

If you do take your non-service dog out in public LEASH THEM. There is no excuse for a dog in the public domain, with the exception of a dog park, TO BE OFF LEASH.

Work with a trainer to minimize reactivity when out in public. You want your dog to have Good Manners.

Let me repeat...NOWHERE IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN, with the exception of a dog park. SHOULD YOUR DOG BE OFF LEASH.

Boom 💥 this is out of control

Meet Napa. Napa is a patient of mine at the Black Hills Animal Hospital. Napa is a tried and true, real service dog. She was born and raised by a non-profit in Ohio that breeds and trains service dogs for the disabled. Napa’s owner has a real disability. The non-profit flew her to Ohio to be trained with Napa to work together as team. Napa is trained to perform many tasks including picking up items and carrying them to her owner. Napa helps her owner to live her daily life. Napa is current on every vaccination. She is weighed monthly at our clinic — a requirement by the non profit to make sure she is cared for and kept at the perfect ideal weight. Napa’s cost is estimated at $20,000-50,000 (breeding program, foster homes, training for 2 years, feeding, medical care, paying for disabled owners to train with and travel to them). Most dogs don’t make it out of the program. Napa is elite. She is one of the most highly trained dogs I’ve ever worked with.

Napa was attacked by a dog today. A dog running loose in a Dollar General. Another dog walked in the door at the same time. Two dogs that had no business walking in a store. Napa has been attacked by dogs twice already in the last six months.

This has got to stop. Please stop taking your dogs into stores. They are not service dogs. A vest you bought online does not make your dog a service dog.

A service dog assists a person with disabilities by performing trained tasks.

Service animals are working animals, not pets. Comfort or emotional support dogs do not qualify as service animals under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Service dogs are so highly trained they don’t even BARK at another dog. They stand still next to their handler.

Taking your pet into public places and letting them interact with, bark at, threaten, and provoke or attack a service animal puts the real service dog at risk. It puts disabled people at risk as well. Napa’s owner could hardly stand to control her and try to help her.

If Napa becomes skittish or dog reactive in public….. she will be sent back to the service dog organization. Let that sink in. Her owner will have to give up Napa because you had to take your dog into every store and restaurant with you. You didn’t control your dog. You have put zero training into your dog. You couldn’t be bothered to put your dog on a leash today.

Let that sink in.

We must do better.

Please leave your dogs at home. And please leave your fake service dog vests at home as well.

Sincerely,
Napa’s veterinarian
Melissa Mez DVM

The first time I saw someone do this I was shocked.
I thought it was a one off, clearly it isn't and social media "influencers" have started to spout this as a "solution".
When I first saw this a few years ago, I could see the skin under the belly twisting and stretching while a lead was tightly pulled up from above.
There was bruising and this dog was certainly in pain.
All because someone wanted a quick way to teach a dog to walk beside them.
Companies even sell carabiners that encourage using this method.
What people may not realise is this can kill a dog.
The belly is not well protected...at all.
The intestines are right there and there are no bones in that area to protect those precious and vital organs.
That constant pressure and squeezing can and DOES cause serious abdominal issues.
PLEASE don't be tempted to follow this trend if you have seen it on social media.

Management is the key.

Understanding dog's body language is just so important. They don't speak English, Spanish, Russian or whatever and we don't speak "dog". They do their best to communicate, and it's our job to learn to understand.

If you're like me, this video will bring tears to your eyes, but it does show you things from the dog's point of view.

Well worth a few minutes of your time.

Now I have arrived at your home,
everything is strange, and I don't feel good.

Do not feel impatient
If i don't sleep in my newbasket.
Yesterday, I slept on a stone floor.

Do not be terrified if i gobble up my food.
Yesterday. I had to do it to survive.

Do not get angry if I p*e on your floor.
Yesterday, it did not matter.

Do not be sad if I am afraid of your loving hand. Yesterday, I did not have one.

Have patience with me, it's your world
but not yet mine.

If I trust you, I can give you the greatest
Gift Ihave to give..
My Heart ❤️

Please never forget, I was a pound dog
All I need, is a bit of time to adjust.

Credits goes to the respective owner ♥️
