Today, just 1.4 percent of farmers identify as Black or mixed race compared with about 14 percent 100 years ago. These farmers represent less than 0.5 percent of total US farm sales, according to a 2021 McKinsey study.

The name 'TREEV' is both the culmuniation of an intention to focus on community, while giving a slight nod to the classic action performed by domestic pets: 'Retreive'.

The word 'retrieve' means to 'get or bring (something) back'. After studying Agricultural Education and Animal Science, along with spending over a decade in the pet industry working with thousands of customers, formulating and developing products for some of the industry's leading pet brands, Founder, Kenan Peters was determined to 'bring back' his knowledge and skill set to his community - showcasing the importance of quality nutrition, diversity and sustainability in the pet industry, while elevating the attention, availability and relevance of high quality pet care.

The Lenox: We designed our 4th BUHZ Bites flavor with the picky pup in mind.

Named after an iconic Flatbush street, along with being a neighboring street to the original TREEV. offices, "The Lenox" was made for the reluctant pup (or pet parent) - we recognize that even though insect protein IS the future and provides tremendous health benefits, it's still not the easiest concept. If you and your pup are used to more traditional proteins, the Lenox provides a balance of both traditional Chicken protein and insect protein from our friends at Oberland Agriscience combined with delicious antioxidant-rich Cranberries.

Based in Brooklyn, NY, TREEV’s mission is simple, yet powerful - ‘Keep Moving Forward’. TREEV is launching its first line of products: the BUHZ Bites - unique and sustainably-sourced dog treats, formulated with a blend of sustainable insect protein, organic and all-natural ingredients from minority farmers and local producers, and without any artificial colors or preservatives.

Inspired by the neighborhood where the company was conceived, TREEV gave the four BUHZ Bites flavor varieties Brooklyn-inspired names, including:

What is a Palatibility Test and what does it do? Palatability for dogs and cats is the measure of intake of a food that indicates acceptance or the measure of preference of one food over another.

How does it work? The product batch was sent to a lab where they ran a 2-day test on the treats with numerous dogs. The treats are tested in ways such as the dogs approach, if it was eaten fully, etc. The data doesn't lie...

treev. is founded on three pillars: Nutrition, Sustainability, and Diversity.

In our previous posts, we have touched on our devotion to diversity and our focus on nutrition, but this week, we'd like to highlight how we plan to bring sustainability to the foreground.

Lets talk: Insect Protein
The best quality dog and cat foods have high protein content (typically found in animal protein) versus vegetable diet foods. Animal-based ingredients have high crude protein content, digestible amino acids, and significant amounts of vitamins and minerals. This is why we like this for our cats and dogs. Sustainability and negative impacts on the environment however are disadvantages of current food based on animal protein.

Industry-scale Insect Protein has been proposed as a viable alternative. Insects have been used as food for farm animals and humans due to their excellent nutrition qualities, specifically high protein, hyper-allergenic qualities, lipid contents and low levels of environmental impact.

Sustainability and environmental impact versus animal protein:
1) Lower water and carbon footprint
2) Less land usage required to raise insects
3) Can be fed with waste
4) Insects emit low levels of greenhouse gases and ammonia
5) Insects' feed conversion rates are more efficient.

The primary insect studies are looking at as a viable source of protein include: black soldier fly, mealworm, and crickets.

Let's talk about Peaches:

Peaches are a great source of vitamin A and fiber. In small, cut-up pieces the flesh of a peach is safe for your dog and provide bits of nutrition that your dog may not gain from their regular dry kibble. Be sure not to share canned or preserved peaches with your dog and of course, the pit of the peach is unsafe for the dog.

Meet the founder of TREEV., Kenan Peters.

BACKGROUND:
• Born and raised on the southside of Chicago; he connected with agriculture as a kid through his father’s family farm in Louisiana.
• Developed an ag passion in high school as an FFA State Officer
• Graduated from Iowa State University with BS in Agriculture Education, focus in Animal Science
• 13+ years in the pet industry, working retail sales, merchandising, product development, sourcing and supply chain.
• Developed hundreds of products for leading pet subscription companies (BARKBox and PetPlate)

WHY HE STARTED IT ALL:
"2020 did a number on me… the focus around injustices and the isolation we all experienced was intense but gave me time to reflect on my passions - specifically my place in the pet and ag industries", KP.

The idea of starting a company became a reality once he was able to understand how and where he could use his talents to make change in his community and eventually, on a global scale, thus… TREEV was born. At TREEV, the goal is to do more than be the favorite brand for your pet, we want to make lasting impacts in our community and around the world. TREEV stands on 3 main pillars: Diversity, Nutrition and Sustainability.

has been a point of emphasis throughout his time in the pet industry - it’s crucial to our furry friends’ well-being that we provide them with the best nutrition, so naturally, nutrition needed to be a focus for the company.

is important for both the health of our planet and the evolution of meat and crop production in the agricultural world, so making sustainable practices a priority for the company was obvious.

and representation of minority groups in the agricultural, pet and veterinary medicine industries are not where they need to be… TREEV is on a mission to change that! Kenan made diversity and inclusion to be major parts of the company, but also found a way to incorporate diversity into our everyday sourcing efforts. The core of our products are the high quality raw materials we source from local minority farmers and producers!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: PEARS
Can my dog eat pears? The answer is, YES! Pears are rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin A, all important nutrients in a dog’s diet. Pears also contain about 5 grams of dietary fiber per cup. Dietary fiber is extremely important in a healthy dog's diet, but remember, for dogs, a little goes a long way.

It is also important to remember that pears have a fair amount of sugar in them, so they are higher in calories than vegitables, as we'd expect. Vets commonly recommend that dog parents follow the 10% rule. Treats, including fruit, can make up 10% of the calories in your dog’s diet.

Can my cat eat pears? The answer once again is, YES! Pears are perfectly healthy snacks for your feline, in moderation. Cats are obligate carnivors and as such, don't require anything in their diet other than nutrition provided by meat, which is completely sufficient for their health. With that said, if your cat likes it, pears provide some additional benefits including vitamin C, vitamin A, and plenty of healthy fiber.

However, it is important to remember that the seeds are not safe for cats. The seeds of pears contain cyanogenic glycosides which can be harmful, so if you choose to give some as a snack, just be sure they are seed-free!
