The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is set to begin today at 2PM. The media often shows images of dogs running with tongues out and passing this off as happy dogs running the trail. What they don’t mention is the 1,000 miles they are forced to run through grueling conditions with only 40 hours of rest during a 2 week period. Over 150 dogs have died because of this race, with the number growing every year. This doesn’t even take into consideration the number of dogs “dumped” for injuries that go untreated, often resulting in them being discarded or shot because they no longer serve their purpose. I must admit has certainly forced some changes this year. Putting pressure on big corporation such as Exxon and Millennium Hotels & Resorts to finally drop their sponsorship of this year’s race. Also, director of “Sled Dogs” - Fern Levitt sheds light on the horrors of the Iditarod. Educate yourself and take action. There are organizations who help place former sled dogs into forever loving homes, but beware there are also plenty of groups breeding sled dogs for sale.

Sweet Betty has been diagnosed with CUPS. It’s an extremely painful condition that causes inflammation of the gums, along with ulcers all over the mouth and excessive discolored drooling. Our vet is amazing and got Betty in as soon as we contacted her to report her symptoms. After performing labs she was scheduled with the veterinary dentistry department the next day. 12 teeth were removed and she is on very heavy pain meds due to the amount of pain this condition has caused her. The next flare up may likely lead to removal of all of her teeth as the only way of helping her lead a pain free and happy life. I can’t imagine the suffering Betty has gone through all this time with her condition having gone untreated. I am so grateful that I found her and can finally make sure she gets the proper medical treatment.
