Get to know the VEC team! 👀

Dana joined our team as a veterinary assistant in August 2023. They were born and raised in Florida. Surrounded by nature, and visiting the local Audubon and reptile shows, they always had a passion for animals. From a young age, they grew up raising freshwater fish, caring for box turtles, and playing with their family’s pack of rescue dogs.

They moved to New York City in 2015 and started their animal care career by pet sitting and dog walking, before transitioning to working at a busy general practice in Queens in 2020. They recently enrolled in a Veterinary Technology program and are excited to further their knowledge by becoming a licensed veterinary technician.

Outside of work, Dana likes to learn new hand crafts, play board games with friends, and go hiking with their pitbull mix, Gryphon!

We recently participated in the ACVO National Service Animal Eye Exam Event, sponsored by Epicur Pharma.

We examined multiple therapy and guide dogs to ensure their vision was normal so that they can do their important work. It was such a rewarding experience and we’re looking forward to doing it again next year! 🦮

Get to know the VEC team! 👀

Cheryl is a licensed veterinary technician from Long Island, NY, who has been working and studying in the animal industry for over 12 years. She started out as a bather/brusher in a Petco grooming salon before making the switch to veterinary medicine in 2014. She has since earned an AAS in Veterinary Science Technology from Suffolk County Community College and a BS in Animal Science from SUNY Cobleskill. She became a licensed veterinary technician in 2018. Over the 10-year course of her education, she garnered experience working with small animals, livestock, horses, exotics, and wildlife.

Though Cheryl’s first love in the veterinary world was actually dentistry, she found ophthalmology in January 2022 and has never looked back. She loves learning (and talking!) about the pathophysiology of eye conditions, especially glaucoma and dry eye disease. Since joining the Veterinary Eye Center in September 2023, she has particularly enjoyed learning to perform ocular ultrasounds. To Cheryl, one of the greatest joys of her job is getting to build relationships with clients and patients as they are treated long-term.

In her spare time, Cheryl enjoys performing arts, including shadowcasting The Rocky Horror Picture Show and singing with a Sweet Adelines International women’s barbershop chorus. She is an avid fan of the Stargate franchise, spaniels and scent hounds of all types, and anything glittery! She and her husband look forward to getting their first dog someday soon, hopefully either a Clumber Spaniel or a Basset Hound.

Linda is a client service representative who joined VEC in August 2023. She is a born and raised New Yorker. Linda has over 16 years of experience working in veterinary clinics from general practice to urgent care.

Linda started out as a veterinary assistant in 2008 at a busy Upper West Side practice. From there, she joined a newly opened clinic cross training as a veterinary receptionist. She enjoyed working with both people and pets so much that she continued working in customer service. In 2021, she made the switch to working in urgent care before joining the VEC team. She enjoys learning the different facets of veterinary medicine and has really enjoyed getting familiar with ophthalmology.

Linda has always had a passion for animals, especially cats. Almost all of her family pets growing up were stray cats she rescued. Outside of work, Linda enjoys working out, video games, going to concerts and spending time with her tuxie cat Cheeto, a stray that she rescued!

This afternoon, we’ll be stepping outside to check out the solar eclipse! Looking at the sun without protection can cause damage to your retinas, so be sure to wear approved protective glasses.

It is safe for your pets to be outside during this time since they will not look at the sun. However if there are a lot of people outside, that might cause stress, so consider leaving them inside. They do not need glasses! 😎

Get to know the VEC team! 👀

Mary joined VEC in January 2023 and is a supervisor to our client care team. With over two decades of dedicated service in the veterinary field, Mary has a profound understanding and passion for animal care. She started her veterinary journey at the age of 15 at Noah’s Ark Pet Clinic in Jackson Heights. Her animal experience is broad, including working with mice at a psychogenic laboratory, as a release technician at the Animal Medical Center, and as a supervisor at Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners.

Known for her warm demeanor and eagerness to lend a helping hand, Mary is deeply involved in community outreach initiatives, bridging the gap between pet owners and essential resources. Beyond the clinic walls, Mary extends her love for animals through pet sitting, ensuring that furry companions receive the utmost care and attention when needed. She likes to seek out volunteer opportunities through New York Cares, and one of her favorite volunteer activities was helping Congressman Gregory Meeks donate turkeys during Thanksgiving. Her goal is to enrich the lives of both animals and humans through her dedication and kindness!

Mary grew up in Queens her whole life and has lent a hand in the Hispanic circle translating and joining cultural events. She is fluent in Spanish, as well as some French and sign language. When Mary isn’t working, you will find her enjoying an outing with friends and family, going to the movies, scouting Barnes and Nobles for a good book, dancing at silent discos, long walks throughout the city, and cooking her grandmother’s Peruvian dishes. She has a small zoo at her home where everyone loves to come by and enjoy her two dogs, cat, gecko, birds, and bearded dragon. Or if not, she will bring the zoo to you!

Amanda is part of our technical team, who joined VEC in July 2023. Amanda was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and is gearing up for her first NYC winter!

Amanda graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. After college she moved to Tampa, Florida and completed a 1 year internship at the Lowry Park Zoo. While in Tampa, she began her veterinary career, first as a client services representative, then veterinary assistant, and eventually a technician. Most of her experience is in the Emergency and Critical Care departments, which she really enjoyed. After 5 years working overnight shifts, she was ready for a change, so in 2022, she was hired as an ophthalmology technician at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists. This experience prepared Amanda well before joining VEC!

Amanda loves all animals, but especially cats. She has four at home, who she loves spending time with: Mishka, Creamsicle, Elijah, and Pizza. Outside of work, she enjoys the beach, art, thrifting, tattoos, desserts, and sleeping late!
