We recently examined and performed surgery on a serval from the Staten Island Zoo!

Servals are wild cats native to southern Africa. This older cat had a mass growing around his eye and within the third eyelid. We removed the mass and he recovered from the procedure well. Check out the 4th and 5th picture for how he looked before and after surgery.

We are grateful to be able to partner with the zoo team on a special case like this! 🐆

Last week, we were honored to attend the ASPCA Annual Awards Luncheon. The veterinarians at the ASPCA’s Animal Recovery Center and the Forensic Sciences teams presented Dr. LoPinto and VEC with this year’s Veterinary Award for Excellence in support of NYC Animal Cruelty Cases. We are very thankful for this acknowledgement!

The ASPCA Annual Awards Luncheon recognizes individuals from the NYPD, the District Attorney’s Offices, the NYC Veterinary Community, and the community at large for exceptional support of animal cruelty cases in NYC.

We truly value our collaborative approach to these tough cases, and are grateful to play even a small role in the care of these animals.

Get to know the VEC team! 👀

Jessica is a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) who joined VEC in December 2023. She is a graduate of LaGuardia Community College and spent her first years as a technician in general practice at the Bronx Veterinary Center. There she honed her technical abilities, developed client education, and gained knowledge of veterinary operations.

Wanting to advance her skills, with a focus in anesthesia, Jessica joined Blue Pearl Pet Hospital where she was part of the ophthalmology and surgery/anesthesia departments for almost 4 years. She became a first time mom in 2020 and took time to spend with her family before returning to clinical practice, this time in emergency. She took a leadership role during the opening of Veterinary Emergency Group - Chelsea as a Veterinary Nursing Development Coordinator, and enjoyed training other team members.

After spending time coordinating an emergency room and elevating nursing care for a variety of patients, including exotic species, she decided to transition back to anesthesia and joined VEC in the anesthesia technician role. Her passion for anesthesia has grown even more and she looks forward to specializing further in the field.

In her spare time, Jessica loves spending time with her 4 year old, as well as her husband of 12 years. She enjoys gaming on her PS5 and short story/journal writing. Jessica is passionate about cats, beauty/fashion, and science, but she especially loves music. She enjoys any karaoke party!

This June, we are celebrating Pride Month! 🌈

To us, Pride is more than a rainbow T shirt and decorations - it is a commitment to our team members, pet owners, and neighbors to provide a space free of judgement and discrimination. That is why VEC has signed the Gender Bill of Rights created by the Pride Veterinary Medical Community .

More information on the Gender Identity Bill of Rights can be found by visiting pridevmc.org.
