Georgia on my mind.

Georgia was dropped off at the shelter as a stray and believe it or not, her owner did not come for her! Georgia weighs 36 lbs. and we think she is about six years old. She is calm, well-mannered and I have yet to hear her bark. She seems find around other dogs, but a meet and greet at the shelter is always a good idea. She loves affection of the humankind. She is going to make someone a wonderful lifelong companion. Please spread the word to all you social media friends and let’s find her a good home

RENOVATE THE RENOVATION The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has failed to improve usability at the Bull Moose Dog Run after a one-year,

08/28/2020

Dear friends,

The newly renovated Bull Moose Dog Run opened a month ago to widespread relief and excitement. Finally – after mobilizing, organizing, petitioning and seemingly endless waiting – a safe and pleasant place to socialize and exercise our dogs!
However, problems with the new surface material are being reported. These problems include injuries such as cut paws, pulled muscles and eye irritation. Several dogs have been treated by veterinarians for such injuries.

Additionally, there is an orange-colored substance on the gravel that many people say is staining their dogs and causes concern – What is this substance? Is it toxic? Is it necessary?

Another category of complaint is that a lot of dogs (and people) simply find it difficult and uncomfortable to walk on. It has been likened to walking on the beach. Some dogs will not walk on it at all, and some people fear losing their balance.

If you have visited the run and experienced any of these problems, please email us. Alternatively, let us know if you are happy with the renovation and the new surface material.

Some of you may have questions or comments about other features of the run. We want to hear those as well, but we feel that the new gravel is a stand-alone issue so we are addressing it separately.

As we learned when we began working to improve our run, we can't do it alone. Sometimes we need your money, sometimes we need your ideas, sometimes we need your elbow grease, and sometimes all we need is your support.

Please let us know your thoughts, and please encourage your friends and acquaintances to get on the mailing list!

Sincerely,

Friends of Bull Moose Dog Run

So, I had a brief chat with the contractor the other day. He claims (unofficially) that they will be done in March. He further said that in the next 2 weeks, we'll see a lot happen. The new surface looks like it will be great - but I would think it will need to be refilled from time to time. Anyway, that's all good stuff!

An Open Letter To The People of New York City

We need your help. We are overrun with dogs, cats, kittens and rabbits. We are taking in 75-100 animals per day and right now we have over 630 animals in our care.

Our placement rate remains high but pets are staying in our care longer and we are running out of room. For the first time in years we have begun using pop-up crates in hallways and offices to house dogs.

We have done some exciting things to get animals out of the shelter. Our BoroughBreak and StrayCation programs have been met with overwhelming success and support and our New Hope adoption partners have repeatedly stepped up to the plate, pulling as many pets as they can, but we need more New Yorkers to help.

The goal is to get as many animals out of the shelter as possible, for as long as possible until the wave of intakes subsides.

What can you do?

Come to the shelters. Come to adopt. Come to Foster. Come to foster-to-adopt.

Share profiles of our available pets on your social media. Browse our pets via website listings (nycacc.org) or on our mobile app (nycacc.org/app).

Share this letter as a call to action.

*To learn more please visit nycacc.org or better yet head over to the shelter so we can assist you in person! Email responses may be delayed as we have all hands on deck to assist adopters and fosters at the care centers first. Please note - our animals are adopted out on a first-come, first-serve basis so hurry over if you see a boroughbred you like!*

There is no better time to join the movement to end animal homelessness in New York City.

This from an upper west side momma:

"Moms please help. My husband was attacked by a pit bull in Central Park this morning. This happened around 9am by the row boat rental. I was there with my baby, dog, and husband, all sitting on a bench- the dog jumped over the baby and I and went after my husband. The owner of the dog came running but it was too late. He is a slim built Caucasian man, short black/dark hair, wearing trousers and a light blue cut and sewn button down shirt. He looked like he would be going to work soon. The uneutered white male pit bull with large rusty patches My baby was hysterical crying, my husband was in and out of consciousness, and I BEGGED the man not to leave- but he left. VERY HELPFUL bystanders ran after him, tended to my husband, and took care of my baby and me while we waited for the ambulance. Please help me locate this man. We need to know if the dog has his shots. We need medical info and help. I don’t know what to do.

If you know this man- or dog- please call the police. They and the park rangers are searching for him now."
