Please share this post, it explains why hot days can be fatal to dogs!
When you read or hear about the bulldog-type, short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds having more trouble with the heat, you may wonder why. On a good day, with moderate temperatures, they have a much more difficult time moving air to their lungs because of their anatomy.
This picture shows the back of the mouth of a long-nosed dog on the left (a collie-retriever cross) and a short-nosed dog on the right (a pug). You can see that this area is compressed and limited in the pug. Pugs, Bulldogs (all types), Bostons, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Pekingese, etc. all have this anatomy. The space is even more limited when they are overweight or obese.
When it is hot, dogs can only cool themselves by panting. Excessive panting leads to swelling in the back of the mouth and throat. This swelling makes it even more difficult for the brachycephalic breeds to breath and they can suffocate.
In fact, any dog can succumb to heat stroke or compromised breathing so PLEASE DO NOT exercise or leave dogs outside in the sun or in cars when it is hot. They trust us to make good choices and take care of them!

I cannot stress this enough.

UPDATE 4/2020: As this post continues to get a lot of polarizing attention even 2 years later, we are adding a brief note to remind you to be kind, and use non-violent language when voicing both agreement and disagreement with this post and others who have commented on it. Thank you!

SLEEP - Make sure that your dogs are getting enough sleep. The time when most dogs are resting and sleeping is when owners are at work. For many though this is not happening at the moment. Not only that but in households with children there can be constant fast movement and high pitched noises. There may a lot of new and exciting play, extra long walks in new environments. There may be other noises in the home, raised voices, mowers, drills, hammering, furniture moving etc as we all tackle the jobs that haven't been looked at for years! All of this adds to your dog's stress bucket and prevents quality sleep. Don't expect your dog to know when they are overtired and to take themselves to bed (would your toddler do that?). Make sure you build some quiet time into your dog's day. Put then in their crate, pen, bed or whatever, with a long lasting chew and leave them. This can be in another room or at least out of the way of regular footfall. Remind children to always leave sleeping/resting dog alone.
Signs that dogs are getting overtired: yawning, forgetting known cues, zoomies, loose control of how they behave, short fuse, barking more, getting more clingy or anxious, showing stress signs, trying to get away from situations, drinking more..... these are just to name a few. Some days it may well be beneficial for your dog to stay at home when you all go out for your daily exercise, allowing your dog to totally escape the constant noise and movement resulting in good quality rest and sleep. 🐾😴

We’ve been contacted about a new cat... It looks like it’s been hit by a car or some other blunt head trauma, but whatever it was, it definitely looks very very bad. We have piles of Hercules’s bills to take care of, but we simply couldn’t let this kitty die... Would you please help us try and save this life?
