I often hear, “I thought it was just a phase,” when a new client describes a behavior challenge that’s been building over time.

This comes up a lot with adolescent dogs—anywhere from around 8 months to 2 years old—as they move into sexual maturity and, like teenagers, have big feelings but not yet the skills or experience to manage them.

But here’s the thing:It’s rarely just a phase.

Avoidance, shutdowns, or reactions that are starting to ramp up—even if they seem small—are worth paying attention to.

Getting ahead of it is a gift to your future self (and your dog).

Sit, down, and stay are useful cues—but they’re not life skills.

Sure, they can help manage your dog’s behavior in the moment. But asking a dog to sit or stay when they’re worried probably won’t help them feel calmer or more secure.

What your dog really needs are life skills—and support from you—to handle challenging situations differently.

We focus on improving your dog’s resilience, problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, and ability to recover after stress.

You know, the same skills that help us cope in an unpredictable and overwhelming world.

When your dog has those skills, they don’t just stay because you told them to. They stay because they feel safe enough to.
The best time to start? Before things feel urgent.
Being proactive is one of the best gifts you can give your dog and yourself.

✨ Your dog doesn’t have to live in perpetual imminent meltdown or stress to get support.

It can start with a question, a concern, or just a hunch that something just isn’t working.

Frivillig håndtering for the win. 💛
