Hershey Kiss is the kind of dog who makes herself at home in your heart almost instantly. She’s gentle, affectionate, and deeply devoted to her people. Once she settles in, she’s all about closeness. Leaning in for affection. Belly rubs on repeat. Curling up beside you like there’s nowhere she’d rather be, because there isn’t.

Large breed dogs like Hershey Kiss often have a harder time finding homes, especially in Manhattan, where space limits and building rules work against them. It’s an unfair uphill climb for dogs who are, quite honestly, some of the best companions out there.

Hershey is well mannered, house trained, and knows her commands. She has a playful side, but also loves being a couch potato. She ADORES being with her people. That’s her happy place.

She recently had leg surgery and is doing beautifully. Water therapy has been helping her rebuild strength, and she’s been crushing it. (Scroll through for videos!) She’s resilient, determined, and ready for her next chapter.

Shelter life is hard for Hershey. She doesn’t want to live in a kennel. She wants a couch. A routine. A person to belong to. And she will give so much love in return.

If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion who will happily be your shadow, your cuddle buddy, and your best girl, Hershey Kiss is waiting. Meet her at our Chelsea location.

Ares has been through more than any cat should. He is a survivor of the devastating fire. While he made it out safely, the experience left emotional scars, and for a while, trusting again felt like a big ask.

But here’s the beautiful part. Ares has made huge strides. He’s slowly opening up, enjoying time with his people friends, accepting treats, and even leaning into gentle pets. One of his favorite comforts is spending time with his kitty friends, which has helped him feel safe and grounded as he continues to heal.

Ares will need a patient, loving home and a calm environment where he can continue to come around at his own pace. He’s resilient, sweet, and brave, and with the right approach, he’s ready to start his next chapter with someone who understands that trust takes time.

Ares is at our Westhampton Adoption Center. Head in to meet him and see if you might be the one he’s been waiting for. Go to www.bideawee.org for more information.

As the year comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on the stories that touched our hearts. This one will always be among our favorites. ❤️

JP, a senior hound mix, spent most of his life at our Westhampton shelter. Year after year, season after season, he watched other dogs come and go. By July of this year, JP was 11 years old and living with multiple health challenges. Still hopeful. Still there.

Along the way, JP became something of a local legend. As part of our Sponsor a Pet program, he had more sponsors than any animal in our care. People followed his journey, sent care packages, and rooted for him from near and far, all hoping he would one day find his person.

Then Gus showed up.

Gus learned about JP through a video on The Dodo. He called us once, then again months later. JP’s photo stayed on his phone the whole time. Gus lives in rural Pennsylvania, more than five hours away, and made the decision to drive 15 hours round trip just to meet him.

When they first shared space, JP barked. Gus stayed calm. Treats were tossed. Distance slowly closed. At one point, JP even tried to nip him. Gus was not deterred.

When asked why he wanted to adopt an 11 year old dog with medical needs, Gus answered with deep clarity.

“I’m 77 years old. How long do I have? Do any of us really know the answer to that question?”

Gus is a lifelong animal lover. When we asked what he loves about animals, his answer was simple and profound.

“They can’t care for themselves. They rely on us. And it makes me feel good to know they rely on me. I’m responsible for JP and for every animal that’s been in my life. I want to make their life as easy and comfortable as I can.”

Gus believes people sometimes get pets for the wrong reasons - focusing on what they can get from a pet instead of what they can give.

“You get a pet to give them a better life. Period.”

Sweet adorable 2-year-old Snowflake has a direct line to the weather gods and she’s here to make sure that everyone remains safe during the major winter storm that’s coming our way!

As much as she’d love to see you, she knows that it’s best to remain indoors when weather conditions are dicey. So, Bideawee’s Chelsea and Westhampton locations will be closing at 4:00 today (12/26) and our Westhampton Animal Hospital will be closed on Saturday, 12/27.

Stay safe, warm & cozy and we’ll see you soon! (We’ll update you here if there are any additional changes to our hours; otherwise, we’ll be open our usual hours.)

Meet Tytus! ❤️

If you hear a tiny snort followed by the sound of happy little feet, that’s probably Tytus zooming by. At just 18 pounds, he’s perfectly sized for NYC life and somehow manages to pack a whole lot of personality into a very compact, piglet-adjacent body.

Tytus is looking for an adult-only home and would prefer no cats, but he does well with other dogs and could be a great match as a sibling to a well-matched pup. He’s playful, quirky, and the kind of dog who makes everyday moments a little more fun. ❤️

Tytus has been waiting for some time for his special someone, maybe it’s you! Meet him at our Chelsea location and go to www.bideawee.org for more information.

This past Saturday was our Whisker Wonderland Event in Westhampton and what a fantastic event it was!
❄️🐶🐱

We did 14 adoptions at our Westhampton location🎉with the help of our brand new Cuddle Shuttle - a beautiful branded van, generously donated by Katie Mancilla - which will be used primarily to shuttle Bideawee animals and gear between the organization’s various locations.

If the shuttle’s first outing was any indication, it’s already on its way to doing an incredible amount of good, helping even more animals travel safely, and find the loving homes they deserve. ❤️

Thanks Katie! And congratulations to all the beautiful new families!

This is three-year-old Kirsten. She arrived in June, all the way from Tennessee, but had a very tough time in the shelter due to extreme fear. We don’t know much about her past but we know that she lost her home in TN and was relinquished to an overcrowded shelter, prior to be transported here.

She’s been through a lot and will need a patient, loving home, but these smiles you see in the photos are REAL. Kirsten BLOSSOMS when she is in the presence of other dogs! They give her the confidence she is lacking and when she’s around them, she just follows their lead and allows herself to experience the freedom and joy of being a dog! It warms our hearts. ❤️

We were looking for a foster home for her for some time and a lovely person stepped up but they don’t have another dog in the home, and we’re discovering that Kirsten really needs that. (We had hoped that just being out of the shelter would do her good, and while we’re sure it has, she really needs doggie company.)

If you have another dog at home and are interested in adopting a sweet, adorable doggie sibling - and transforming a life in the process - please reach out here or email [email protected]
