Another New Year’s has passed, and while most of us were busy celebrating, sweet Riley was spending yet another night at the shelter. Our hearts break a little more each year she’s here, waiting for her forever home.

Now, let’s talk about Riley. She takes her time warming up to new people, but once she does, she’s a loyal and loving companion. Her people friends absolutely adore her and she couldn’t be cuter playing and cuddling with her favorite stuffed animals. Unfortunately, the shelter can be an incredibly stressful place for her so it’s much harder for her to meet potential adopters, and she may require a few visits to get to know her. We believe that with the right person willing to invest time and love, Riley can thrive and grow into the incredible companion we know she can be.

Is 2025 the year that you want to make a real difference in an animal’s life?

We love and appreciate all our adopters and anytime you adopt an animal from a shelter, you are making a difference - no doubt about it. But there is something incredibly powerful about opening your home and heart to an animal that is not going to fly out of the shelter - an animal that needs a little extra patience and is likely to be overlooked. Because every dog and cat in a shelter needs to be adopted, but not every one needs to be rescued.

Sweet Pluto is an example of dog that is looking to be rescued. He’s a beautiful, sweet boy but he’s very sensitive. New people make him nervous so the shelter is a challenging place for him. He was previously in a home, where we were told that he was a wonderful, loving companion, but his adopter’s circumstances changed and they could no longer keep him. The situation was sad for everyone, and we promised that we would do our very best to find him a wonderful home.

And we have seen Pluto make some great strides since he’s been with us. Once he’s comfortable with you, he’s a happy, snuggly boy. But he needs a little time to get comfortable. And unfortunately, many adopters want to come to the shelter once and leave with a pet. And we do understand that. But we want to invite you to remember that sometimes the best and most beautiful relationships are built over time and just because a shelter animal needs a little more time to get to know you, doesn’t mean they won’t make a wonderful, loving, worthy companion. Please remember that these animals can be scared and shy for good reason. And we have the incredible power to transform them. And if you’ve ever personally transformed an animal, you know that there is nothing more rewarding.

Happy Foster Friday to the one and only Toya, a truly special soul who has overcome so much and is now ready to find her forever family ✨🫶

Toya is about 6 years old and has faced her share of challenges, but her resilience shines through. She is FIV-positive, which means she has feline immunodeficiency virus. While this may sound intimidating, it simply means her immune system needs a little extra care, like a stress-free environment and regular vet visits. With proper management, FIV-positive cats can live long, healthy, and happy lives.

This brave girl also battled stomatitis, a painful inflammation of the gums and mouth. Despite this, Toya has emerged stronger than ever. She’s now on Atopica, a medication she’ll need for the rest of her life to prevent painful gum flare-ups. Thanks to this treatment, she’s thriving and pain-free.

Toya’s journey hasn’t been easy, but her spirit is unbreakable. Every foster who has cared for her has fallen head over heels for her sweet, mellow nature. Once she feels safe and loved, she blossoms into the most affectionate companion. Her love is quiet yet profound—perfect for someone seeking a calm, devoted friend.

What an absolute hunk! 😍 This three-year-old looker is Blitzen and while he’s relatively new to our Westhampton location, he’s already stealing hearts left and right!

Hearrived from Texas and was recently transferred from our Wantagh location, where he was medically cleared and given a glow-up ✨ to our Westhampton location where he’s ready to meet his forever family! There’s been a lot of changes in his life the last few weeks so he’s still adapting and can be a little shy and fearful in new situations. But he’s extremely sweet and loving and has already shown that with a little patience and stability, he’s going to do just great! He’s already making friends and flashing that beautiful grin to everyone in his path. We love him already and we know his future family will too! ❤️

This sweet boy recently made the long journey from Texas, and we’re thrilled to have him with us!

Santa was very nervous when he arrived - he was too scared to even come out of his crate! Thanks to the patience and love from our amazing staff, he’s starting to come out of his shell!

Santa loves hanging out with other well-matched dogs, and his buddy Latke has been a real game-changer for him. 🐶❤️ We know this gentle pup will thrive in a calm, loving home where he can feel secure and cherished. Isn’t it the best feeling to come home from a stressful day and be greeted by your furry family member? A dog lick on the face or a purring cat on your lap can ease your mind and soothe your soul. Sadly, there are many people who are unable to share their life with an animal companion and miss out on the comfort and joy they can provide.

With this in mind, Bideawee launched one of the first ever animal-assisted therapy programs in 1982, and in 2003, we expanded our pet-therapy offerings by creating the Reading to Dogs program.

Bideawee’s Pet Therapy program transforms lives by providing unconditional love to so many, and YOU and YOUR PET can be a part of that transformation. Our volunteer teams are trained to visit nursing homes, hospitals, college campuses, libraries, and schools to bring comfort, joy, and confidence to those in need.

Ya know how they say that it isn’t always about the destination, it’s about the journey? That’s how feel about sweet bonded sisters, Perkins and Chaplin. ❤️

This may not be the happy tale you’re used to hearing about (Perkins and Chaplin are still in the shelter waiting to find a forever home) but is an incredible happy tale nonetheless, and one more than worthy of celebrating!

These sisters were born outside and spent the beginning of their lives living under a porch. When they arrived at Bideawee in February, they were pretty terrified so they immediately went to a foster home, where we hoped they would be able to decompress and come out of their shells. It was a slow process, but after weeks of hiding in their foster mom’s sofa bed, they transformed. They became super playful, cuddly little girls who loved indoor life and enjoyed the company of their human companions. Their foster reported that Perkins loved to curl around her feet in bed and Chaplin routinely asked for belly rubs!

But eventually their foster mom had to return them back to the shelter and the transition was extremely hard on them. They resorted to hiding again and it for weeks, they barely emerged from their little cat caves. But our staff was incredibly patient with them, showing them consistent love and care, while simultaneously respecting their boundaries and allowing them the space to come out on their time. And their efforts paid off! Chaplin and Perkins are now out and about, welcoming time with their human friends, making biscuits, enjoying pets, participating in holiday photo shoots (what?!) and being the kitties we’ve always known they can be. ❤️ And they are ready: ready to leave their hardships behind, ready to trust in the kindness of people, and ready to embrace the beautiful new life that awaits them.

They may not have reached the pinnacle of their happy tale just yet, but they are well on their way!

Perkins and Chaplin want to thank all the incredible staff members, volunteers, fosters, and supporters who have made their story possible.
