From :
The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has detected the canine distemper virus (CDV) in raccoons and skunks in the Greenwood Heights, Sunset Park, and Windsor Terrace neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
Canine distemper is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that affects an animal’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological systems. Signs can resemble other illnesses, such as rabies, and distinguishing between them requires specific testing.
Thanks to a safe and effective vaccine, the prevalence of canine distemper has declined in North America over the past few decades. However, dogs who are not fully vaccinated remain at risk. Puppies who have not yet completed their vaccination series are especially vulnerable.
To protect your pet:
Ensure their vaccinations are up to date.
When outdoors, keep dogs on a leash and away from wild animals. Don’t feed wild animals.
Avoid exposing puppies to unknown dogs until they are fully vaccinated.

From the Animal Medical Center: “A mysterious yet highly contagious disease is affecting dogs across the US and is similar to the symptoms of kennel cough or canine influenza. Be on the lookout for signs of upper respiratory illness in your dog, such as sneezing, coughing, nasal and/or eye discharge, and lethargy. If you suspect your dog may be affected, contact your veterinarian.
This is an evolving situation, and we will share information as soon as we have it.”

Hello, I’m going on a much needed vacation from September 1- September 15. Recognizing that I have a hard time disconnecting from work, often working nights and weekends when I should be focusing on my family, I will be making a better effort to leave work at work and take care of emails and callbacks only when I am in the office. I appreciate all your trust in me but I want to make sure I can keep doing this for another 20 years to help even more pets. Thank you for your understanding.

Dental with incisor extractions on a dog with severe horizontal bone loss and gingival recession. The radiographs (x-rays) exported in a lower resolution than seen on the computer but you can see the center teeth appear less sturdy and they were very mobile during examination and probing. Post-healing photos will appear in a future update!

On April 18th a sick skunk was picked up in Greenwood Heights. It was found to be rabies positive. This is why the veterinary field is so adamant about rabies vaccination for ALL pets. Let alone it being the law, rabies has a 100% fatality rate. It is also 100% preventable. We urge all of our clients to keep their pet’s rabies vaccines up to date.

Comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment , aka COHAT. Cleaning the calculus from the teeth and along the gum line will improve oral health and decrease inflammation that leads to gingivitis. Ongoing care at home such as regular teeth brushing and dental treats can slow down the progression of dental disease. However, once there is calcified plaque on the teeth only ultrasonic scaling and polishing under general anesthesia can do a thorough enough job to properly clean these teeth until they are pearly white!

I agree with all this. When I was in school in rural Virginia I saw many healthy large breed hunting dogs that ate nothing but Ol’ Roy from Walmart. They still lived to be 12-15 years old. What they had in common was that they were not obese. Expensive , organic, and grain-free foods would not have made them live longer and as we know now some of those BEG (boutique, exotic, and grain-free) diets might have triggered heart disease if fed for years. The pet store shops like to guilt pet owners into buying expensive diets that don’t make pets any healthier. The biggest risk to getting cancer in mammals, like us and your cats/dogs, is becoming older. Don’t feel guilty for feeding only what you can afford as long as your pets are eating something balanced and in moderate portions.

Since I started practicing, I’ve had multiple clients ask me if feeding their dog is the reason they died at 14, 15, 16 years old.

This question breaks my heart. This is a guilt that people carry that no one should have to— it’s very unlikely your dog’s food led to their death! Especially at such an old age.

In a relatively recent article on AAHA Trends, I was quoted the following in an interview:

“There is this perception among a lot of people that if you’re putting out all this money for this pet food, your dog will be so healthy, you’ll never need to visit the vet. Honestly, it’s kind of sad to me that people are sold on this idea that if you do all of the right things, this will keep your dog safe, or it will keep your dog healthy. It ends up putting a lot of guilt on the shoulders of consumers who maybe can’t afford this expensive diet. Now they feel like their dog only lived to be 14 or only lived to be 15 but could have been 18 if he had been eating this diet they couldn’t afford. And, in reality, that may not have been the case. We don’t have enough evidence to say those diets would have made such a big difference. That’s such a terrible weight to put on somebody’s shoulders. It’s really frustrating. To me, that’s another aspect that feels predatory.”

You can read the whole article here: https://www.aaha.org/publications/trends-magazine/trends-articles/2022/september-2022/f2-nutrition/

Don’t go broke to feed your dog. Dog Chow, Pedigree, Iams, Purina One, are all budget-friendly and nutritionally appropriate options for otherwise healthy dogs without nutrition-responsive disease.
