Medication alert! Please remember, human medications are not good for pets.

As weight-loss medications like Ozempic grow in popularity, the Pet Poison Helpline has reported an increase in cases where pets with diabetes are accidentally given these drugs instead of insulin, resulting in potentially life-threatening complications. These mix-ups typically occur because both medications are stored in the refrigerator and can look similar. Ozempic’s autoinjector pen, in particular, is sometimes mistaken for insulin, especially by caretakers unfamiliar with the medication.

💡 How to Prevent Medication Mix-ups:

· Store human and pet medications in separate, designated locations.
· Clearly label your pet’s medications or keep them in color-coded containers.
· Explain your pet’s medications and dosing instructions to anyone who might care for your pet.
· Keep all medications out of reach of pets and children.
· Double-check the label before administering any medication to your pet.

The horrible fires in SoCal are a reminder...have an emergency plan/kit for your family and pets!

Our hearts are with everyone affected by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. These events remind us how quickly life can change, and how valuable it can be to have an emergency plan in place that includes your pets.

✨ Key Reminders:

ID Collars and Microchips: Make sure your pet’s ID collar and microchip registration have your current contact information.

Know Where to Look: Pets often hide in familiar places during stressful situations.

Plan Your Evacuation: Research pet-friendly shelters, hotels, and boarding facilities in advance. Share your evacuation plan with everyone in your household.

Carriers and Leashes: Keep them accessible for quick transport. Practice getting your pet into carriers to reduce stress.

Assemble a Pet Emergency Kit: See our graphic for a checklist of essentials, including, food, water, medications, first aid supplies, and documents. Go through your kit periodically and swap out expired items.

Arrange for Backup Support: Identify a trusted friend, neighbor, or family member who will step in and care for your pets if you're unable to do so.

Check out our comments for a link to our downloadable Pet Emergency Kit Checklist.

The wildfires in LA are absolutely devastating for humans & animals alike. If you would like to help, Pasadena Humane is in desperate need. They have taken in hundreds of animals, many severely injured, all the while dealing with fire effects. Their information is below, if you can help.

Update on Eaton Fire Emergency:
We have taken in over 300 animals due to evacuations and have staff and volunteers working nonstop to help with their care. We are starting to see many animals coming in with burns and injuries. These animals are being treated in our ICU. We are providing them with pain medications, wound care, fluid, and oxygen as needed.

We’re working with shelters across the state who have offered to take in the animals that were already in our care so that we can focus on providing resources to the displaced animals. A huge thank you to the shelters throughout California who are offering assistance, as well as all people in our community reaching out to volunteer or donate. Our biggest need right now is for monetary donations to help provide emergency resources to animals affected by the wildfires.

If you are being evacuated and can go somewhere with your pets–such as a friend or family member’s home–that is ideal. If you are evacuating, please take your animals with you. We are very thankful that the Pasadena Civic Center has allowed people to stay with their pets. We are helping in any way that we can–providing them with resources such as food and leashes for the displaced families. We also have pet food available at the shelter for those who need it. If you cannot go somewhere that allows your pet to stay with you, you can bring your animals to the shelter where we are offering emergency boarding.

Our Animal Control Officers have been on the ground helping animals in the community. While they are not going into the active fire areas, we are preparing to get in many injured animals that will need our help in those areas once the fires are cleared. If you find injured wildlife, please text our wildlife helpline at 626.344.1129. If you find any other animal, including dogs and cats, please call Animal Control at 626.792.7151 ext. 970.

We anticipate getting in even more animals who are in need of emergency medical care as the fires continue. If you are able to donate, please visit https://give.pasadenahumane.org/give/654134/ #!/donation/checkout

How can you protect your cats and dogs during the current bird flu outbreak? AMC's Dr. Ann Hohanhaus suggests that pet owners:

🦆 Be aware that dogs or cats could catch bird flu when ahunting or investigating a bird carcass since direct infection can occur from exposure to saliva, mucous, or f***s from infected birds.
🐓 Avoid raw poultry diets as they are a risk for your pet. Beef is also a concern since cattle can become infected.
🐶🐱 Take precautions for both dogs and cats, even though dogs appear to be less likely to contract the disease than cats.

Important info, please read! If you are feeding raw foods to your pets, PLEASE find an alternative ASAP.

⚠️ H5N1, a type A influenza virus, is spreading among birds and some mammals in the U.S., including cats.

Here’s how you can help protect your pets:

· Avoid feeding raw meat or dairy.
· Keep cats indoors to limit exposure to wildlife.
· While the risk to dogs is less clear, it’s best to keep all pets away from dead animals, livestock, wildlife, and their waste.
· If your pet shows signs of illness, such as lethargy, fever, or respiratory issues, contact your veterinarian.

This is a developing situation, but taking simple precautions can help keep your pet safe. Check out our graphic for more details and share it to raise awareness.
