For Enrique Chagoya, appropriation of diverse sources encourages subversive readings of history.

He calls his method “reverse anthropology,” critiquing the dominant conventions of colonial cultures and reversing power dynamics.

El Popol Vuh de la Abuelita del Ahuizote is an eight-foot codex that reimagines history through surreal narrative juxtapositions. His reference materials range from pre-Columbian imagery to U.S. comic books.

Tomorrow is the last day of (Re)Print! Join us at 4pm for Radical Appropriations, our final talk of the year.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye‘s ten etchings of First Flight (2015) are sepia-colored portrait studies of Black men wearing the feathered ruff collars that are a staple of the artist’s descriptive lexicon. Yiadom-Boakye invokes the history of European portraiture conventions through a serialized format of representation.

In multiple works, Cecily Brown copies imagery from printed ephemera. For Brown, copying, and recopying, works by modern and historical masters is a method for close looking, inquiry, and revelation—a way to “internalize” the images.

Take a look at Brown’s study of the Chairing the Members made by print satirist and social critic William Hogarth. (Shown in the last two images)

Don’t miss your chance to experience these prints and more—(Re)Print closes on December 14th!

10/11/2024

Mark Bradford’s etchings are based on “merchant posters” salvaged from the streets of South Los Angeles—ads that target low-income residents in moments of need. Each of Bradford’s prints was made from two plates: the backgrounds were printed from the backs of used etching plates, while the “poster” was printed separately and collaged on top.

Recontextualizing found street ephemera as fine art, Bradford reveals the social, economic, and racialized oppressions at work in society.

Join us tomorrow at to see these prints in person and hear Master Printer discuss working with to print these etchings at !
