R***r
Berlin, VT

R***r is a great boy looking for a special home. This approximately seven-year-old neutered male has a winning personality and would love nothing more than to live out his days by your side. Great with dogs, loves meeting new people, and a pretty easy keeper: he's a solid 10/10 doggo.

R***r's story is a sad one, but we want to make sure he gets another shot at the good life. R***r originally came to ACDRA two years ago, heartworm positive and in need of help. He was adopted by his foster home, who helped him through treatment and gave him a great life these past two years. Unfortunately, R***r's dad passed away unexpectedly and he found himself back in a shelter. We welcomed him back into ACDRA care as soon as we found out, only to discover more misfortune: cancer. R***r has leukemia.

This diagnosis has not put a damper on his spirit: R***r remains a happy boy with a zest for life. He loves playing with canine friends in the yard, enjoys meeting new people, and LOVES getting all the scritches. He'll plop at your feet and lean against you, pawing impatiently if you take too long to commence the pets. He enjoys going for walkies, though due to his current weight he can't put in big miles. His quality of life is good, and he has been started on prednisone to help give him as many more good days as we can. With this treatment plan he has a prognosis of 12-18 months, and we would love to see him placed back into a loving home where he can make the most of the time he has left.

Given his circumstances, R***r is available as a hospice adoption with a waived adoption fee. He is on a prescription for daily prednisone, which will continue to be provided by the rescue. Periodic CBC bloodwork is recommended to track disease progression and adjust his dosage if needed. He is up to date on vaccinations and monthly preventatives, and showing no signs of illness save for some ear lesions which do not bother him. R***r is overweight at 41lbs and on a diet, which should be continued to help increase his longevity - his current target weight is 30lbs. He is housetrained and has adjusted well to being crated, though I suspect he had free reign of the home and furniture in his last home.

Great article by Ren Volpe about the truth about shock collars.

Dog training has come a long way with regards to harsh methods or aversive methods to get our dogs to obey.

are banned in many countries. We in the USA are way behind. The science of positive reinforcement training, is real and is the best way to learn about humane treatment of the dogs we love so much.

Causing pain in training dogs is never an option when we can train without it. It’s laziness on the part of humans and trainers. We do better when we know better.

Why, yes! I am ready to learn about mat work! mix Mia is a super smart, very enthusiastic girl who is improving her impulse control skills and more! She loves learning new behaviors and has an amazing attention span. She is really learning how to be polite to guests and to give people some space!

Balanced dog training using positive reinforcement (rewards-based) methods and aversives (physical punishment) is no better than simply using force-free positive methods and love.

It's okay to ask a dog trainer what their credentials are - and you should expect them to have some, whether it's a degree or a certification. Safe and effective dog trainers are constantly learning, not just through experience, but by seeking out education.

Love this poster by Lili Chin. And it's true!

I created this back in 2018-2019 after doing the Behavior Works "Living and Learning with Animals" (LLA) online course.
Effectiveness is not enough to justify the use of fear, pain, intimidation, and the inhibition of their agency when training our companion animals. Ethics and welfare matter. (To be contd.)

This is sad but true.
