At Brooklyn Cat Cafe, we are proud to be one of the earliest cat cafes in the US, and the first to launch in New York City’s most populous borough. Our mission is to save our city’s cats, and we advance it by offering a hip and inviting destination where cat lovers of all ages can interact with adoptable animals – and one another – while learning about pet rescue and care together too.

Happy Friday from our newest family. Any guesses on their names?🦌

This adorably mustachioed family was surrendered to the city shelter after their owner could no longer care for them. Bella Mama got pregnant and had a whole lot of kittens (eight to be exact). Two kittens are a lot to handle, 8 is a tiny zoo! As soon as we saw these babies, we knew we had to take them in and give them the round the clock care they need.

What do newborn kittens need? Supplemental feeding if mother cat can’t provide enough milk, medications to treat the various colds kittens are prone to getting, cleaning up lots of accidents (if their eyes aren’t open, how will they find the litter box?), food when they get old enough to eat, along with a host of other things. Your donations directly help us support families just like this. Every cent counts, and we greatly appreciate it (as do the kittens).❤️

Big news!🚨 Our teen internship program is back and better than over! The program is 6 weeks long, and takes place once a week on Fridays from 5-7pm. Session 1 is September 13 - October 18 and Session 2 is November 1 - December 13. We are currently accepting bookings for both, but make sure you book quickly as only 6 people are allowed in each session. You can book at catcafebk.com/visit, under the classes tab.

Each week will have a guest speaker from a different area of our organization. We will cover topics such as cat care, small animal care, clinic work, rescue work, and more!🐱🐰

Interns will leave the session with:
• Increased knowledge of shelter operations
• Increased knowledge about animal clinics
• Increased customer service skills
• Ability to weigh cats and trim nails
• Ability to do a basic health check on cats
• Knowledge of our foster/ adoptions programs
• Intro skills for rescuing stray and feral cats
• Skills for continued work with cats and small animals of varying temperaments

The event runs from 7:30 to 9:00, with slots bookable in 30 minute intervals (the cats don’t mind if you book extra spots to stay longer!). Two of her kittens have been adopted, but Pasodoble, Bachata, and Argentine Tango are still available. Shall we dance?💃 A local bodega cat surprised the owner when her five newborn kittens waltzed in — now named Argentine Tango, Bachata, Cha cha cha, Pasodoble, Texas 2 Step. Once this Prima Ballerina raised her babies, we spayed her, and she’s now happily ruling over her potato chip throne at the bodega (see last photo.) We’re thrilled to help local community members keep their cats healthy. No encores for this leading lady!❤️

Happy Purride from the Brooklyn Cat Cafe!🌈 Our cats are bursting with pride all year long, and they love any chance to flaunt it! June is right in the middle of kitten season, the time of year when we see the highest rate of young kittens being born all over NYC. Car Chester is an affectionate cat who somehow found herself in an industrial part of Brooklyn. She was so shy and timid on the street and took so long to approach the trap for food, that we assumed she was feral. Well, we were wrong.

Car’s eyes light up in anticipation of attention or pets. While we think she is pretty perfect, we know with a little love and confidence building, her personality will shine.

There are many reasons to spay your cat, even if they don’t spend time outdoors and aren’t at risk of having kittens. The story of Luna is a perfect example. Luna’s father recently thanked us again for helping them with their feisty feline! Luna’s doting family was at their wits end. Luna was in heat — again! No one was getting any peace or any sleep. Two Fish was found outside with a ruptured eyeball. He’s a lucky guy — he was rescued. Every homeless kitten should have the chance to receive vital veterinary care — including eye surgery in cases like Two Fish — but they won’t. Kittens born outside struggle to survive, facing cold winters, hot summers, hunger, disease and other dangers. Born in a garage, Farore was the smallest of his litter and suffered from many medical issues. He may not have survived had a rescuer not scooped him up and brought him to the @bbawcrescueclinic, which is supported by your donations. Once Farore and his siblings were healthy, they went to a foster home (thank you, fosters!) and are now thriving and ready for adoption! There really is no “I” in rescue. R2 is here to tell you about all of the Brooklyn Cat Cafe’s feline massage packages! At our cafe, the wellness and happiness of our cats are our top priorities. R2’s owner had to move out of his apartment due to lead poisoning and couldn’t take him along. R2 had a hard time adjusting when he first came under our care. He would hiss, swat, and avoid contact with anyone. Additionally, R2 has hyperthyroidism, adding to his challenges both mentally and physically. We are dedicated to showering R2 with love and care. He’s on our VIP list for regular massages to ensure he feels happy and pampered every day. We are also thankful that R2’s previous owner surrendered him to us, instead of leaving him on the street (like our friend Sir Yorrik). Responsible surrendering of pets is imperative to help control the cat houseless cat population in NYC. PS: we know lots of you are waiting for a Sir Yorrik update. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have to delay. We have some cats in our care who are not candidates for our main cafe space. Thanks to your donations, we are lucky enough to have a space where cats with many differing needs and personalities can thrive. Cats who aren’t candidates for the main space may be really young, have health issues we are working on resolving, they may not be too fond of other cats, or they may be very shy and waiting for an experienced foster. It’s our goal to keep all of the cats in our care mentally and physically engaged with toys, games, catnip, and kitty puzzles. Sally Boy, the star of this video, isn’t a fan of too many feline friends (he’s great with a smaller number of other cats). He’s having a great time in our Shy Cat Room bonding with a couple of our other kitties and his caretakers. Melmoth decided to take over our reels today, so he could show you a day in his life! He was found wandering outside in Bed Stuy, and had clearly been living outside for a while. His behavior, however, suggests he was at one point an indoor cat. Due to his past experiences, he is a little bit slow to trust humans, but is very sweet once he gets to know you. He is a pro biscuit maker, and an avid treat connoisseur (treats are the best way to become his friend). Furrnando wandered into a large colony, hungry and alone. He was trapped with some other unfixed cats in the colony. While recovering, he showed his sweet side by asking for pets, making biscuits, and loving headbutts. Malico lived with 6 other cats and 5 humans in a one-bedroom apartment. None of them were spayed or neutered, and the cats needed to be rehomed, because there were too many cats in the home. Affordable spay/neuter services are limited and are nearly impossible to find in NYC. The crisis is not limited to outdoor cats but also affects owned cats. We do lots of things while a cat recovers from their spay/neuter surgery. We assess not only their health (treating skin and respiratory infections, and performing dental surgeries) but their personality as well. In the case of Ulla, one assessment helped with the other. We had been monitoring and working on solving this little girl’s GI issues and this morning when she needed to have her tail bathed, we realized she is friendly! She was so happy to get pets and scritches, and leaned into all the love. Our Story

Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition (BBAWC) was founded by a group of animal rescuers in 2007 with a focus on improving the welfare of abandoned animals in Brooklyn. The organization began working with individual animal rescuers to provide low cost veterinary services, adoption listing and screening services.

Finding foster homes for rescued cats and those accepted from city shelters became the organization’s top priority — but it was a major struggle without a central facility where rescuers, foster families and potential adoptees could meet together. The organization launched The Brooklyn Cat Cafe to address this need.

The cafe opened in May 2016 at a storefront location in historic Brooklyn Heights.

Brooklyn Cat Cafe is 100% volunteer-run, managed by the Director of BBAWC who oversees the business affairs, cat care regimen, and daily operations at the cafe. A team of volunteers serves at the cafe during open hours and prepares and cleans after hours. A supervisor certified in aspects of cat care is on site during all open hours.
