Our mission is to save our city’s cats, and we advance it by offering a hip and inviting destination where cat lovers of all ages can interact with adoptable animals – and one another – while learning about pet rescue and care together too.

You might see slightly fewer posts from us for the next two weeks.. why?🤔 The cats have decided to take a much needed break from social media. Not to worry, they’ll still be at the cafe and available to see visitors, and they said they definitely don’t mind posing for some pics.📸

To our amazing IG family, thank you for supporting us from all over the world. The cats (and us) appreciate you.❤️

Happy Sunday from Mixed Greens, who went to the vet for x-rays today!🥬 Our newest rescue hails from Queens, where she was found limping and struggling to use her back legs. We assumed she was hit by a car and suffered a pelvic fracture, an all too common occurrence for cats who live outside.

Upon further examination, our vets didn’t see the external trauma that usually goes along with being hit by a car - things like road rash, dirt on the fur, etc. The latest conclusion is that she was likely kicked by someone.

We wish we could introduce you to this gorgeous calico under happier circumstances, but she’s safe and warm now. We can’t wait to watch the rest of your story, Mixed Greens.❤️

We simply couldn’t resist sharing this beautiful photo of one of our newer cats named Muse, taken by one of our staff members.❤️ Plus, a photo of her thriving in foster!

Muse is a Persian mix (we think) who was surrendered to us by her prior owner. This girl struggled in our holding space, where she was very unhappy around other cats and all the excitement.

Thanks to our system of fosters, we found this girl a temporary home super quickly, where she has shown her true colors - she’s secretly a giant teddy bear!🧡 She likes to cuddle, and sure looks cute while doing it.

Thanks to our fosters for allowing us to give cats like Muse a safe place to land.

Norman’s condition remains serious, but he’s receiving the care he desperately needs.

A CT scan revealed multiple fractures to his jaw, eye socket, and other areas. While most fractures are expected to heal on their own, a large shard of bone pressing into a nerve-filled cavity cannot be repaired. The medical team is hopeful it will heal without causing neurological damage.

Norman also has fractured teeth that will need treatment, and unfortunately, his eye was so badly damaged that it will need to be removed.

He needed a blood transfusion before he could get the surgery to repair the huge gash on his hard palate.

Norman is being very brave and a great patient. He isn’t ready to eat yet - so tube feeding will continue for a little longer - but we hope he can come home today and is feeling a little better.

Norman has been to the hospital for two overnight stays, 3 different clinics and sedated for treatment 3 times. Yet we still don’t have any investigation into who did this or had any official organization work to ensure this person doesn’t do this again. Please help.

Norman Rockwell is a neutered and loved bodega cat. Three days ago, he was beaten with a piece of wood by an angry customer and ran away. We found him today and took him for X-rays and treatment. He has a fractured jaw and hard palate injury and will need orthopedic surgery.

Norman is safe now, but we need your support to ensure that his abuser is never able to do this to anyone else.

Despite clear evidence of abuse, the process of reporting and follow-up remains ineffective, leaving animals like Norman without the protection and help they deserve.

Demand that there be effective follow through of animal abuse cases in NYC. Rescuers and anyone who has tried to get help for abused animals knows that reports are dismissed without follow up unless there is public pressure. NYC had this country’s first animal abuse laws and protections but has become overwhelmed and ineffective at addressing abuses. The City council knows and have spoken to ASPCA and DOH in council meetings about this problem.

It’s up to you to ensure that this abuse is stopped. Share this post and demand that your representatives create change.

Tonight, as we celebrate art and community at our Art Show’s Opening Night, let’s come together to ensure Norman Rockwell gets the care he needs — and to demand better protections for all animals in our city. These kinds of things happen all too often, action starts with you.

Happy Saturday from our newest adorable orange family. Meet Lock, Shock, Zero, and Dr. Finkelstein.

They will be available for adoption once they’re old enough, and for now, they are loving kitten parties!🎉

🚨Adoption plea🚨

Do you have chinchillas at home and want to add to your herd? Do you have an energetic home and want a chinchilla as a pet?

Chinchillas are very energetic and social creatures. They love to play, run, jump, and socialize with their chosen people. They love to tunnel and explore small spaces. We just got an urgent plea about a chinchilla whose owner got sick and passed away, and we couldn’t say no.

Meet Christina Dior.❤️ We are of course happy to keep this girl as long as it takes to find her forever home, but because chinchillas are so social we would love her to find her forever home as soon as possible, especially with the holidays coming up (we know she’d love to be home for the holidays).

Please DM us if interested, and share with your network. Thank you.🥰

These kittens were double-bagged, dumped, and left to die. Last night in Sunset Park, someone discarded these 10 day old kittens like trash.😢They were found just in time by a kind rescuer who kept them warm overnight until they came into our care. Since then, we’ve been bottle-feeding them around the clock.

It’s heartbreaking to think about what could have happened. But their survival — and the survival of so many other cats — depends on the kindness of people like you.

Every day, we see stories like theirs — urgent cases that can’t wait for tomorrow. Caring for the most vulnerable takes resources and every dollar makes a difference. With around the corner, we’re reminded how much we depend on our community to save lives like theirs.🐱

Your support today ensures these kittens — and so many others — get the care they need when it matters most. Every gift, big or small, helps us prepare for Giving Tuesday and brings us closer to our vision of a NYC where no cat suffers on the streets.

Click the link in our bio to donate. Can’t donate? Share this post and help us expand our reach. Thank you for being part of their rescue story.❤️

Welcome to the opening night of the Brooklyn Cat Cafe’s first annual Winter Art Benefit show!👩‍🎨This show features artists from all around the country who have contributed beautiful, cat themed work. All work is for sale, with at least 50% of all art sales being donated to the Brooklyn Cat Cafe’s rescue work. It’ll be a fantastic night with art, live music, small bites, and lots and lots of cats.❤️

As a fundraising event, our goal is to reach $10,000. As the weather get chillier, these funds will make a tangible, significant impact to cats in need. Snag some holiday gifts, pet some kittens, and enjoy a fun, community centered night.

We’d like to thank local vendors Marbre NYC and Felice who have generously donated small bite catering for this event.🍰

Our Story

Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition (BBAWC) was founded by a group of animal rescuers in 2007 with a focus on improving the welfare of abandoned animals in Brooklyn. The organization began working with individual animal rescuers to provide low cost veterinary services, adoption listing and screening services.

Finding foster homes for rescued cats and those accepted from city shelters became the organization’s top priority — but it was a major struggle without a central facility where rescuers, foster families and potential adoptees could meet together. The organization launched The Brooklyn Cat Cafe to address this need.

The cafe opened in May 2016 at a storefront location in historic Brooklyn Heights.

Brooklyn Cat Cafe is 100% volunteer-run, managed by the Director of BBAWC who oversees the business affairs, cat care regimen, and daily operations at the cafe. A team of volunteers serves at the cafe during open hours and prepares and cleans after hours. A supervisor certified in aspects of cat care is on site during all open hours.
