Great progress here on the „ crab“ walking! Key is to have the dog start moving with their hind legs, so the pivot platform helps with that.. then flatten the curve: and VOILà!!! 🦀🦀🦀🦀

Be careful what you reinforce!
After practicing DOWN/ STAND quite a bit Millie clearly internalized the fact that after hearing down she would get up again and stand.
Also the “ down” position was not relaxed. She was on her haunches ready to spring up.
So: we introduced a similar “ down” behavior but gave it a different name and made sure that it meant: relax onto one or the other hip. That position indicates relaxation and requires more effort to get out of. So hopefully just the body position by itself will encourage/ reinforce a lack of effort to leave the position.
Then I added noise to make sure that was not a factor in the restlessness. Now Millie can differentiate between “ down” and “ settle” 🤩😎🐾

The challenge was that Millie became restless in the office environment. She could do it in other environments. I tried to figure out why not in this space. So I decided that we would approach the situation differently. Rather than immediately directing and giving her an appeasement and limiting her ability to leave the assigned space I suggested allowing her to explore the office off leash and wait for her to seek out the blanket voluntarily. I was hoping to create enthusiasm for going to hang out. It took a little while but she did volunteer and from then on things got so much better that she did not even have to rely on her blanket. She was not even triggered by her human exiting the space! It was a really fruitful session. I say: If you want reliability you want the dog to enjoy, feel no compulsion whatsoever: just confidence and the feeling that they can control their environment. That was built on a great reward history. 🎉😇

How, when and where to deliver reinforcement is key to better understanding 🤓🐾

Blueberry is very enthusiastic about playing his piano but offering too many behaviors at once makes it difficult to reinforce/ reward and give good information. There were too many errors in the „ behavior salad“. SLOWING Down and using the clicker was really helpful in that situation. Marking the behavior clearly and then cueing the following behavior really helped. Thank you for listening so carefully!!🐌😇 ♥️
