We’re thrilled to share that our very own Junior Schouten, Head of Horticulture and Maintenance, was recently featured in Gardenista Sourcebook’s subscriber newsletter for a “Quick Takes” interview.

If you’re as obsessed with good design as we are, then you probably already follow for their impeccable eye for all things landscape and outdoor beauty. They just get it. So, for them to ask us to participate, can you say yes, please?!💚

Want to know why garden neophytes should make friends with perennial garden owners? Or why English ivy is so overrated and Salvias are Junior’s go-to pollinator magnet plant? While the answers to his interview are available as a perk of being a paid subscriber, you can also get his expertise, along with his team of rock stars, by engaging our Maintenance Team.

Drop us a line, or DM us. Let us know you’ve got a green space that needs some TLC and could benefit from a horticultural eye like Junior’s 💚

Our hearts, prayers and thoughts go out to all those in Southern California affected by these January wildfires. The devastation is unfathomable in these residential neighborhoods. Los Angeles is a city quite unlike NYC. It’s more like a continuous flow of towns, all joined together within a county boundary line. To put it into perspective for us NYC urban dwellers: Pacific Palisades, for example, think of any town in Westchester County that you’re familiar with, and now imagine it nearly entirely burnt down. Gone.

These “unprecedented” fires, storms, rain events, heat waves, snow dumps, will sadly become more normalized in the face of climate change. More on that at a later date. No one is immune to this new era of disasters brought on by climate unpredictability.

For those looking to lend their support, one organization to consider is the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank (www.lafoodbank.org). They oversee a large network of partner agencies to mobilize resources to those in need. They are also providing updates via their website on these fires, from the perspective of the LA Regional Food Bank.💔

⭐️Farmily Highlights of 2024⭐️

To close out 2024, we’re sharing some of our team’s most memorable moments from the past season. We’ll be posting these over the next 2 weeks. Enjoy! 💚

First up: Partnerships Project Manager, Rhyden

“This spring, we had the privilege of propagating and distributing over 3,000 seedlings—at no cost—to the Bangladeshi American community in Kensington.

It’s not lost on us that structural inequities are a driving force behind health disparities, and with nearly half of all Bangladeshi immigrants in the U.S. calling New York home, we knew that if we were truly going to support this community, it was going to take more than just good intentions. It meant listening deeply to the people we hoped to serve.

After speaking with several Bangladeshi American community members, we quickly realized that there was another way to distribute food - different from our traditional CSA program. This is a community rich in farming knowledge, one that values homegrown food and understands the power of collective care and self-sufficiency. We were asked to grow culturally specific seedlings so community members could continue to grow their own produce in community gardens and backyards.

We are constantly inspired by the tradition of coming together to grow and share food, and we are deeply grateful for the chance to learn from the Bangladeshi American community in Kensington. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best way to show up for each other is to make space for new ideas and honor the wisdom already present in the community. Here’s to growing together—one seedling at a time.”

Ah Mother Nature, she’s on the war path today and the next few, with frigid temps in NYC… but that’s ok- the green spaces we design, build and maintain need a legit winter to properly go dormant and stay strong for next season.

If you’re anything like us right now, this cold day has us dreaming about next spring and all of the garden plans, landscape tweaks and hardscape improvements we’d like to make for our NYC clients.

Got a green space that you’d like to fix up for next spring? Click the 🔗 in our profile and let’s chat! It’s never too soon to think about dreamy garden spaces.💚

If you’ve been fortunate enough to attend a celebration at one of our rooftop venues, snag a ticket to one of our beloved farm to table dinners, or spend a lovely Sunday at one of our Open Houses, then you know how special the experience is! The welcome is always warm, and the decor is always vibrant. These moments of magic don’t just happen by chance. Behind every public and private event that we host, there is a team of dedicated, hard-working folx who do everything in their power to ensure that each event is a perfectly memorable occasion. That crew is our Programming & Events Department.

Thank you P&E team for your work all season long, in all kinds of weather, at all times of day and night, to create the ideal balance of hospitality, joy, thoughtfulness, and beauty, that we are able to share with our guests at Brooklyn Grange! ❤️

Shh... our farmers might still be catching up on their well-deserved rest! 🤫

As we approach the winter solstice, the early mornings and long hours in the fields have given way to a slower pace. They’re finally able to dive into that book that’s been collecting dust since July, and make amends with that cat that’s been eagerly waiting morning snuggles.

Day after day, no matter the weather, our farmers take to the fields to care for the soil, tend the crops and support one another, knowing that their efforts are more than just growing food. It’s a life that’s as rewarding as it is demanding, and it takes a toll on both body and soul.

What keeps our team going, though, is the view from the field: looking up at the city and knowing that more than half of what they’ve harvested is making its way off the roof and into the hands of New Yorkers—many at no cost. That’s our mission: to provide produce that’s meaningful, accessible, and representative of the diverse communities we serve. And our farmers work tirelessly to ensure that we show up for the 700 families who rely on us every week to provide fresh, nutritious food.

This year, our farmers harvested nearly 80,000 lbs of produce at our Sunset Park and Brooklyn Navy Yard farms and close to 60% of those yields were distributed to our neighbors at no or low cost. Across the river, over at The Farm at our farm crew has worked collaboratively with the JavitsCares team, and the on-site catering company, on a first-of-its kind initiative to provide nearly 2500 meals to the

As we close out this season, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the dedication and heart that farmers pour into their work. Without them, we wouldn’t have the fresh, nutrient-dense produce that keeps our communities healthy and strong.

Thank you, farmers, near and far—your hard work is the backbone of everything we do. Here’s to rest, renewal, and another season of growth. 🌱

Spreading holiday magic, one railing at a time!

We’ve been decking out some of our sites with lush pine boughs, wreaths, holly, and a little extra cheer. Brightening up the city streets has us feeling oh so festive. After all, nowhere is more iconic than New York City around the holidays. Let’s make it merry, folx! 🌲 🎁 🌟

🌱🐝 This GivingTuesday, we’re buzzing with excitement to support our nonprofit youth education partner, City Growers, and their incredible work connecting NYC youth with urban nature.

Through hands-on programs like their Bee Ambassador Program, teens learn to care for pollinators while exploring the vital role bees play in our ecosystems. By diving into urban beekeeping, they’re not just working with honeybees—they’re cultivating leadership skills and building a foundation to tackle the climate challenges of tomorrow. 🌍✨

City Growers uses the magic of urban farms, gardens, and green roofs to inspire the next generation of climate leaders. Every donation today helps grow programs that empower young minds, nurture curiosity, and foster a love for our planet.

Let’s invest in the future of our city and our planet. Join us in supporting City Growers this GivingTuesday! 🌻

Providing meals for hundreds in our community started with one conversation.

In May of 2021, NYU Langone Family Health Centers and the Chinese-American Planning Council combined forces to launch the Sunset Park Community Coalition, and invited us to join this powerful collaboration dedicated to building an integrated food security system right here in our Sunset Park neighborhood.

Every month, we come together in a Zoom room full of committed community partners—food pantries, soup kitchens, community-based organizations, and local schools—all of whom have earned the trust of Sunset Park over time, creating a direct line to the essential needs of our neighbors.

This week Brooklyn Grange proudly joined forces with our coalition partners and comrades to provide nearly 900 culturally appropriate, hot meals for families in temporary housing—those who may not have access to a kitchen this Thanksgiving.

We know that fighting against systems of oppression are designed to fatigue, but when we come together, when we show up for one another, we find strength. It’s in this collective action, this unwavering solidarity, that we build a community that’s not only more resilient, but more just. Together, we rise.
