Good morning, 2024! Here's a little ray of sunshine to start your year off right from our dear friend . This pic of Farmer Hannah washing greens in the farm sink is our metaphorical cleansing ritual for this holiday. May your 2024 kick off with a start as fresh as a sprig of just picked parsley!
Our 2023 Top 9! The highs were high! The lows were... still high, but only because we spend most of our time on a roof! There were some real smoky, sweaty stinkers this year, and let's just say we're READY for 2024.

The sun is setting on this winter solstice, the shortest and darkest day in a year that frankly had no shortage of dark days. Brooklyn Grange has always marked the Winter and Summer solstices as a sort of New Year, or at least an opportunity to recalibrate. Today we rest in darkness. Tomorrow, we lean full tilt towards the sun and recommit to finding a little more light each day.

For once, the answer to the age old question “what’s that smell” is a good thing! Our Design/Build/Maintenance team decked our halls with boughs of holly for the holiday season! Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la. Okay, it’s actually balsam fir, a beautiful North American fir native to the northeastern US and central Canada. It’s bringing winter cheer and smells amazing!

Five years after its installation, this small Brooklyn green roof is still thriving! We received these photos from the owners, who care for the space themselves and who said that the simple meadow aesthetic has evolved beautifully season after season. When we’re done slinging veg for the year, it’s time for some well earned rest. And this includes our soil. It’s critical to give our planting beds time off over the winter to refortify after our intense farming season.

We leave nearly all of the final crop growth in the field to minimize erosion, and to keep essential microbial life dormant til the spring.

Last week we completed phase 1 of this cedar fence build. There’s more structural work to be done in the yard before we come back to continue the fence to the house, but in the meantime the client gets so much needed privacy.⚡️🔨🗜️

Our food forest at the was recently featured in and we couldn’t be more proud. 😊🤩 It’s one of our favorite projects and is a thriving example of how urban green spaces can not only be beautiful but can also provide sustenance and habitat to all.
In the spring of 2022, our Javits farm team transformed the original 38-apple and pear tree orchard into a rich, biodiverse landscape, that grows “food for people and other species—all of whom desperately need green infrastructure in any built environment…The food forest is intended to mimic a natural ecosystem and is made up of mixed layers of understory trees and shrubs as well as perennials and ground cover. Many are native to the New York region, such as elderberry, pawpaw, beach plum, American licorice, serviceberry, yaupon (with caffeine in its leaves), Montauk daisy, and false indigo”

NYC’s “second summer” came and went this weekend, and fall is finally(?) here.🍁🤞
We love to see asters and goldenrods pushing out their final blooms, burnished grasses going to seed, and the chlorophyll in leaves making way for anthocyanins to have their day. Our city's streets, backyards, and rooftops are symphonies of color this time of year. But you know how New York seasons are; blink and you might miss them.🍂🌾

Climate Week NYC is happening right now, until Sept. 24. But let’s face it, every week is climate week. As citizens of this planet, we are seeing, feeling and dealing with catastrophic climate issues 24/7 365. A few sobering stats to wrap your head around:

There have been 8 catastrophic floods worldwide in the first 11 days of September. Mediterranean storm Daniel dumped 16 inches of rain on Libya in 24 hours, resulting in floodwaters that killed at least 5100 people. Severe rain pounded parts of Central Greece, North Western Turkey, Southern Brazil, Central & Coastal Spain, Southern China, Hong Kong and the Southwestern U.S.

The United States has experienced 23 billion-dollar disasters so far in 2023 alone. The Maui Wildfires killed nearly 100 people and destroyed Lahaina; Hurricane Idalia in Western Florida resulted in damage estimated at $2.2-$5 billion; a Minnesota storm dropped hail the size of ping pong balls, cutting off power to more than 25,000 homes and businesses. And these 3 U.S. events all occurred in August 2023.
