The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has identified the presence of harmful algal blooms (HAB) in bodies of freshwater across NYC every year during the summer months. While we do not see many cases of known toxicity or exposure, it is important to stay informed. If you suspect your dog has been exposed, please rinse them off, monitor for symptoms, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

😎❄️ STAY COOL THIS SUMMER ❄️ 😎
Our Brachycephalic patients are at risk!

Heat stroke and respiratory emergencies are one of the biggest concerns with all brachycephalic patients. Please read the attached handout for more detailed information on why this is so.

Signs of heat stroke include:
-Excessive panting
-Elevated heart rate
-Vomiting and/or diarrhea
-Weakness or collapse

Here are some recommendations for Brachycephalic patients/owners:

- Provide fresh, clean, cool water ALWAYS (adding ice cubes throughout the day is helpful)
- Use frozen food or treats in a puzzle feeder as treats.
- Limiting walks to morning and evening (the coolest times of the day) and stay in the shade if possible.
- Avoid walking outside when it is over 90°, if possible.
- Use fans and air conditioning to keep them cool.
- Keep the blinds closed during the hottest part of the day.
- Use a harness instead of a collar, reducing stress on the trachea
- Keep your dog at a healthy weight.
- Avoid over feeding. Split meals into two times per day (or three if possible).

Let’s help keep our patients breathing comfortably!

Happy Learning!

🐶 PUPPY SEASON IS HERE, SO LET’S TALK VACCINES 🐶

There are vaccines known as “core vaccines” (Rabies & DA2PP) and “non-core” vaccines (Bordetella, Leptospirosis, Lyme, and Canine Influenza). What do these vaccines protect our furry friends from?

Rabies: Required by NYC law. Rabies causes progressive neurologic decline and death after exposure through an animal bite.

DA2PP protects against Distemper, Adenovirus 2 (Hepatitis), Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza. Distemper is an often fatal virus affecting the respiratory and nervous system. Adenovirus causes respiratory infection and acute or chronic liver inflammation or failure. Parvovirus causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and life-threatening sepsis, often in puppies. Finally, parainfluenza causes respiratory infections in dogs.

Why do we recommend adding bordetella and leptospirosis?

Bordetella: Also known as the kennel cough vaccine. A common and highly contagious respiratory infection. Highly recommended if you plan on bringing your puppy to training classes, daycares, dog parks, groomers, etc any place that may have high volume of canine intakes.

Leptospirosis: Spreads through contaminated urine from infected wildlife animals and causes liver and kidney failure. High recommended with the increase in rat, deer and racc**n populations in NYC. Especially as a curious pup who may drink from puddles or lick their paws clean after a walk.

Other lifestyle vaccines include:

Lyme: Transmitted by deer ticks, also called black-legged ticks, and causes joint inflammation and potential kidney failure. Important vaccine to have if you plan on hiking or bringing your pup to heavily grassed/wooded areas.

Canine Influenza: The influenza virus causes respiratory infection that may lead to pneumonia.

Protecting our furry companions isn’t just a responsibility; it’s an act of love. Ensure your dog’s well-being and safeguard our communities by staying up-to-date on vaccinations. Together, let’s keep tails wagging and lives thriving!
