Monica (201557) Being brave. 🥰 😇 Please don’t let the picture mislead you - Monica is the nicest, cutest petite pumpkin at ACC. Quiet in her pop-up kennel, she’s a love on leash, staying close on our outing to the park. Fond of treats, her ears perk up when taking them gently from my hand. She’s not feeling well this week, so hoping she’ll recover soon. In the meantime, please come meet Monica - she’s a 33 lbs of all love!

The last few months have been very challenging for us at ACC. Every day, we have struggled with no open kennels for incoming dogs, and when one dog leaves to go to a home or into foster, their kennel is immediately filled with a new dog from our intake area. We've also had multiple litters of puppies coming through our doors. Dogs in crates line the hallways and offices.

In the past 19 days, over 800 new animals have come in to ACC. This includes 517 cats, 253 dogs, 39 rabbits and guinea pigs and hundreds of other animals that all require care and support from our dedicated team. This is in addition to the 800 animals already in our care at the start of the month. We are asking for your help to get through these summer months. Here is how you can get started today:

Adopt - We have hundreds of pets that are available for adoption today. Adoption fees start at $25 and include vaccinations, microchips and spay/neuter surgeries.

Foster - Taking a pet or a litter of kittens into your home temporarily will help us save lives by opening up new kennels for incoming pets. You can find out more information on our website: https://www.nycacc.org/foster/

Help Lost Pets Get Back Home: If you find a stray pet, help them get back home by walking through the neighborhood, posting their photo to , and taking steps to get them back to their families before bringing them to the shelter. Visit https://www.nycacc.org/services/lost-and-found/ to learn about how to help lost pets get back home.

Donate: All of these pets need supportive care through sheltering, staffing, medicine, and so much more. Your donations go straight toward the care of the hundreds of pets that have come to our shelter in the past 19 days.

ACC will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day.
A volunteer writes: Cookies N' Cream is my favorite ice cream, AND my favorite dog! This sweet treat of a gal has been with us for over a month, and i just can't believe that no one has "scooped" her up yet?! A bit shy at first, Cookies/Cream appreciates a gentle approach with new people, but opens up once she knows that you are a trusted friend. During her time with us, Ms Cookies has been a very good girl, quickly learning skills like "sit" and "shake hands/high five" while doing her best to adjust to the busy environment at the shelter. She's a young gal who will be a great companion to the loving person(s) who is lucky enough to take her home.

As you are all aware, ACC has been struggling with our dog population for well over a year. During this time, we have continued efforts to decrease intakes and increase placements, mainly by providing resources to owners and stipends to New Hope partners. We've also tried new tactics including immediately placing easy-to-adopt dogs with partners, working to find placement before intake, as well as running adoption promotions.

Despite all the work we have put into these and other efforts, we continue to operate far above our capacity for care in all locations. In recent weeks we’ve exceeded 300 dogs with 48 dogs living in crates. We also have 90 dogs that have been in our care for 30 days or more.

In speaking with and researching other organizations, it is clear that we are far from alone in dealing with this. Shelters across the country are housing multiple dogs in kennels and having at-risk lists for the first time.

To avoid having to make difficult euthanasia decisions based solely on space constraints, we are expanding our Emergency Placement program to give as many dogs as possible the chance to be networked and placed in a timely manner. Starting May 23, ACC will have two lists for dogs who urgently need placement:

(1) Priority Placement (PPL) Dogs:
Priority Placement dogs need extra attention because their quality of life in the shelter has declined and/or their behavior could make placement difficult if they remain in care. We are making their placement a top priority. These are dogs that if not placed soon, could be added to the At-Risk List. Dogs on this list may be placed with a New Hope rescue partner or depending on their behavior, may be eligible for direct adoption or foster.

(2) At-Risk of Euthanasia (ARL) Dogs:
At-Risk dogs suffer from severe medical issues and/or behavioral problems and have been unable to find placement. These dogs are at-risk of euthanasia if not placed before a given date. The ARL is posted Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 6PM. Euthanasia decisions are made Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. If a decision is made to move forward with humane euthanasia, a thorough Quality Assurance (QA) process is implemented in which all records are reviewed. At-Risk dogs are eligible for placement through adoption or New Hope rescue placement. They are not eligible for placement into the ACC foster program.

We have added a terminology section, to further explain the acronyms and terms we use. And, we have added an FAQ section.

The goal is to bring attention to our challenges and show the help we need in the most transparent way possible.

We cannot get through this overpopulation crisis without the help from the community. Please consider adopting, fostering, sharing dog profiles and/or helping your neighbors who may be struggling with their pets.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of another shelter dog’s company. This is Willow (Will-o-wisp but whatever).
She is a tiny little firecracker that was so very exited to get out of her little pop up crate. She was thrilled to play in the grass by the beach. Not a water dog (yet).
Simple day of walking, sniffing, birding, eating grass, Wendy’s, and more walking. It’s fun to be able to give a dog a break from the shelter life. I suggest if you are in NYC sign up for one. It is how I started down the dog foster road, Brandy was a borough break that was overlooked at the shelter for over 200 days. Also obviously, foster, adopt, volunteer, donate, help make the world a better place. Thank you, good night.

Progression of my with Diva ( #198383) as documented through the lens! 📷 This pretty girl was a total gem on her field trip from . Despite the weather not cooperating, we had a great day strolling, exploring, devouring treats 🦴 (a l w a y s have treats with this girl!), and getting some couch time in (with scritches) and then snoozed the afternoon away! Diva is estimated to be 5 years old, med-to-large mixed breed brimming with pizzazz, and has lots of love to give — Go meet Diva today!!

💎 looking for a good leash walker? Look no further! (Unless there are birds nearby, then hold on!) 😜
💎 love a dog who’s ears have a mind of their own? Diva’s for you!
💎 want a dog with warm hazel eyes that will make you melt? ✅ Diva’s got ‘em!
💎 need a laugh? This girl is silly and has mastered the art of mid-air treat catching (it’s the lip smacking at the end for me!) 😂
💎 enjoy beauty and brains? It may just be a match made in heaven. This girl is a quick learner (took all of 2 times for Diva to figure out the treat pocket!) and is eager to please. She could use a crash refresher course on manners but we could all use a little polishing in one way or another!

thanks to 🚕 Diva had a short cab ride with lots of tossed treats on her way back to the Manhattan Care Center!

Meet Lady, ID Number 188987, a 1.5 y/o, ~50lb Pit Bull mix that we spent about three hours with as part of the BoroughBreak program!

Lady’s Bio: https://nycacc.app/browse/188987

Lady was surrendered to the shelter in December. She lived with a family with two children and was noted to be friendly, outgoing, and playful. Her previous home stated that she had no problems with handling (including baths!) and no resource guarding while with them. She exhibited behaviors common for a young, energetic, untrained dog, including jumping on people and pulling on walks.

While in the Care Center, Lady has worked with trainers and attended group class, where she was able to pay attention to her handler even with other dogs and people around (a big deal).

This afternoon, Lady...

🌳 Took walks in two parks where she "checked in" with us frequently. Some dogs are only interested in the environment, not you. This one was into us!
📝 Practiced "sit" and responding to her name for treats. It's clear she's played the training game before and seemed to enjoy it.
🚘 Rode in the car (and through a drive thru) like a pro! She settled in the back seat and respectfully watched us eat lunch without trying to swipe from us.
🐶 Passed other dogs without barking.
👥 Made friends with a couple of humans we encountered. She needed a second to warm up and then enjoyed neck scratches.
🧽 Allowed us to wipe her paws and legs with a towel - since a couple hours outside meant... mud!

Lady did not pull hard on the leash with us nor did she jump on us - she was newly acquainted with us so on her best behavior. That doesn't mean she won't need training, but it DOES mean that with guidance, training and good handling, she is capable of good choices :)

According to her notes, Lady's looking for an active home, with adults and children over 13, who will continue her training and enjoy the companionship she has to offer. She's been there a while and the staff says she really needs her ticket out. Please share!

Lady is located in Staten Island. For more information on Lady or the BoroughBreak program, check out the ACC's website.

ACC is thrilled to announce the receipt of a $50,000 grant from PEDIGREE Foundation. This grant will launch a groundbreaking program dedicated to supporting dogs in foster care, particularly those with behavioral challenges. With the generous support of PEDIGREE Foundation, we can expand our foster network and provide invaluable resources to caregivers, ultimately improving the quality of life for these dogs and increasing their chances of adoption success.

Through the grant, ACC is looking to hire a Canine Behavior and Outreach Foster Trainer. This brand-new role will focus on creating training plans and running daily behavior modification sessions for ACC foster dogs. This role will also be designing and providing low-stress handling training to staff, volunteers, fosters, and adopters to learn how to gently modify challenging behaviors.
