Meet Lola, our beautiful Patient of the Week! After a successful two-week surgical recheck, Lola was ready to shed her blue donut. A four-year-and-ten-month-old Ragdoll, Lola, had bladder surgery (cystotomy) for stone removal and complete excision of a Mast Cell Tumor on her left foreleg. Lola is doing well and will be closely monitored on a special diet. 🐱❤️🌟

Spending one-on-one time with 3-year-old Jasper after her dental procedure, Terrielle displayed one of the most important aspects in any healthcare field—compassionate patient care! Anya’s mom took this picture and sent it to us with the following message after her recent visit to KSV. “Thanks so much to Dr. Kalvig and the friendly, helpful staff at KSV! Anya always feels right at home whenever she sees some of her favorite people who treat her like a star!” A recent KSV Senior Patient of the Week, Anya, is 12 and a half-year-old Chocolate Lab, who we treated for a rash on her belly and small growth on her mandible. ❤️🐾🐶

Cooper is our Senior Patient of the Day!! An 8-year-old Golden Retriever, Cooper enjoys relaxing in his backyard under a large sun-guard umbrella during the cooler hours of morning, late afternoon, and evening whenever he is not taking long walks or playing in the grass. A flat, not too soft, not too firm couch—keeping lean—and veterinary joint supplements help Cooper remain comfortable and in good shape for lots of activities as he ages! ⛱️☀️🐕

As our extreme heat may begin to cool off for a stretch, remember that we are still in the Dog Days of Summer, and it is always wise to practice Warm Weather Safety Tips until temperatures consistently stay below 70 degrees. ☀️⛱️🌳 • Always walk in shaded areas
• Avoid running and excessive outdoor play on hot days
• Carry plenty of cool water and ice, with a drinking bowl at all times.
• Schedule outdoor walks early and late during the coolest times.
• Pack items such as a cooling collar/vest, easy to wet and dry swimmers’ towel, and battery-operated fan.
• Plan walks near water, such as a lake, river, or garden hose.
• Do not wander far away from a cool indoor environment to rest.
• Use extra precaution in brachycephalic breeds, young and senior pets.
• Avoid walks on hot sand and asphalt.
• Carefully schedule social group activities to prevent overexertion during the hottest times of day.
• Know the phone number and location of the closest veterinary hospital when you are traveling
• Never leave pets unattended in a car or outdoors in hot weather. ☀️

We wish Amy a very Happy Birthday and Bon Voyage this week as she travels throughout Hong Kong and China before her Senior Year of High School in Connecticut this fall! One of our Summer Pre-Vet Interns, Amy, brought her best to KSV daily for her brief and meaningful first experience in vet med! After many practices told her no, Amy didn’t give up and traveled to Manhattan from Great Neck to ask in person for an opportunity. We are happy that she stayed focused on her summer dream, and we look forward to her return during the school holidays as a terrific team member! 🎂🩺🐶🐱🗽

Weekend Greetings from Ella! This beautiful girl was rescued in Houston and moved with her new family to Manhattan. At over nine years of age, Ella does very well on anticonvulsant therapy to prevent seizures after brain changes from head trauma and a fractured skull before her adoption. Our Patient of the Day could not have found a safer and more loving home with her new family and feline roommate, Francine. ❤️🐱🗽☀️

This handsome little guy has snuggled into his new favorite lap and routine. We were happy to see Luchin again this week; feeling better on treatment for a chronic ear infection. 🐶❤️☀️

Oliver enjoyed a lot of love and attention from Amy, one of our Pre-Vet Summer Interns! Our Sweet Patient of the Day is a 4-year-old Domestic Shorthair who was rescued into a loving Manhattan home one year ago. Oliver was found needing a hindleg amputation after serious unknown trauma in West Virginia. Oliver is truly the sweetest boy and living proof of how humans and animals can rescue each other in all their times of need. We are so happy that Amy was a part of learning his story and providing his care! 🐱🗽🌞❤

July 4th and summer gatherings bring crowds. friends, and families together in happy celebration, but our pets may have a different experience unless we prepare ahead. To follow are tips to help create safe pet-friendly celebrations.
• Make a plan for dog walks to maximize routes and times away from heat, crowds, and commotion.
• Ensure all ID tags, collars, leashes, harnesses, and carriers are up-to-date and close securely.
• It is a perfect time to have your pet microchipped and ensure that your current address and registration are up-to-date.
• Create a comfortable resting place indoors where your pet feels safe and secure, away from the windows.
• Use approved calming aids and soft music in the days before and during the fireworks, just as you would for thunder and lightning storms, or other loud outdoor events. ☀️🐶🧨

With ongoing climate changes we share increased proximity to our wildlife friends, often at home in our family yards. Although we admire their beauty, we must remember to protect our families and out pets from serious tick-borne illnesses. Monthly use of safe oral or topical flea, tick, and mosquito protection for dogs and cats is very important for their protection and for preventing tick exposure for everyone in the household. This is of course addition to safe yard treatments and protective human products. 🦌🏡☀️🐶🌳

As Elaine moves to Boston to continue her dreams, we wish her all the best, as she will always be part of our KSV Family! Elaine gave an informative presentation on Public Health and emerging zoonotic diseases, incorporating her Master's Studies in Epidemiology with the important lessons she learned in her first veterinary experience. She is excited to pursue her career in One Health, which highlights the connection between human and animal diseases and the vital role that Veterinarians have in that field. 🎂🐱🐶❤🌞
