Joni was truly my partner during the course and she was so patient with me and all of my shenanigans. When she’d probably rather have run around playing fetch or tug, she put so much effort and focus into our training sessions.

We worked together for 2.5 months, 2-3 days a week with each session lasting an hour. It was essential for me to make sure her needs were met before each session with plenty of play breaks in between. There were many stressful moments for me but seeing her live each moment to the fullest helped me take each day at a time.

I want to also give a big thank you to Joni’s guardian for allowing me to work with her and record in her home for the course. Truly a blessing to have both of them in my life!

While Kizz, is away for the upcoming eclipse. I am the substitute servant for her animals Legs and Watson. I thought it was important to try to keep some of the routines in place so these photos are for and Watson did get his Saturday apple cider donut as per weekend tradition.

Thank you for sharing my training tip!

Set yourself and your pup up for success this holiday season. Start training now for the situation instead of having to train during the situation.

Creating a safe space beforehand and teaching your pup they can go to their safe space whenever is essential.

Even on a regular routine walk, the landscape can change. The changes could include scaffolding, dirt instead of grass, holiday decorations, or even a cute turtle statue.

Some changes your dog may not care about and other changes could be really concerning to your dog.

This is why I always bring food with me on walks even if the dog with me is confident and comfortable outside because I never know when something could change and I want to be prepared to help the dog I’m with.

When welcoming a new furry friend into your home whether a puppy or older dog, training is going to be part of your life together.

Let’s cover the foundation of how to train any basic manner or behavior.

A cue - this can be a verbal word or phrase, physical gesture like a finger point, or something else that prompts your dog to perform a behavior.

Marker - this can be a sound, word, or something else that communicates to your dog the behavior they did earned them a treat. I usually use the word “yes” as my marker word or a clicker.

Treats - a food reward you give to your dog to increase the chance they will perform the behavior you asked them to do again.

General praise like “good dog”, “good girl”, “good boy”, “nice job”, etc… is useful and can help motivate your dog but should not be the same as your marker.

Your “marker” is a promise that a reward is on it’s way.

Photos of one way to connect a leash safety strap or leash connector to your dog’s collar and harness.

A leash safety strap can keep you and your leash connected to your dog in case one of your equipment pieces fail or your dog slips out of their collar or harness.

The carabiner is to substitute where the ring would be on the back strap of the harness.

When introduced slowly and positively, barriers like baby gates, playpens, and crates can be wonderful management tools to help you and your pup succeed!

You should also feel free to use more than one type of barrier if you need to!

The most important piece is to help your pup create a positive association with barriers by pairing those experiences with treats, play, and food puzzle toys.

If you and your pup are struggling with barriers then please reach out to a R+ certified trainer or behavior consultant.

In celebration of my upcoming cooperative care class I will be doing weekly posts about cooperative care training and tips!

Here’s the first one!

Teaching a dog to stand on cue can help to decrease the amount of physical handling and restraint. A stationary standing position can allow you to do at home vet care and grooming as well as allow your vet to do physical exams and other protocols as well.
