Teaching your dog a stationing behavior helps to decrease the amount of physical handling and restraint you need to do during cooperative care procedures.

Stationing behaviors give your dog more agency and control over how they move and position themselves which is a powerful feeling.

Personally, I love a chin rest with the use of a towel that your dog can target with their chin. This way the towel becomes the cue and you can then move it to different spots depending on how you need your dog to be positioned.

Every day we have interactions with our dogs that will require some form of handling or touching.

Being aware of when and how we handle our dogs and then also how they feel about those experiences is really important.

Cooperative care training includes the day to day interactions as well as the common grooming and medical procedures we all think about like nail trimming or vaccinations at the vet clinic.

Helping our dogs feel better about being touched and handled daily is also working on those larger goals and interactions.

I wanted to give a shoutout to and her amazing work on dog and cat body language. Learning about your dog’s body language and how they express themselves is so important when starting cooperative care training.

Cooperative care is one of those terms that many dog owners have heard of but aren’t quite sure what it means.

Cooperative care is an umbrella term that includes at-home care for your dog to medical or grooming procedures. This can include daily activities like wiping your dog’s paws to complex behaviors like blood draws.

I love helping my clients split cooperative care procedures into easy steps they can have fun practicing with their dogs.

Let me help you take the anxiety and stress out of the care you do for your dog!

Just like us, our dogs usually need some time to re-orient themselves after the festivities. They need time to get back into their normal routine with you. Give yourself and your dog a day or two of quiet time after the holiday events are over.
