Looking for an opportunity to share your dog’s love with people in need? Good news! The Good Dog Foundation is seeking new dog-human therapy teams. This wonderful organization specializes in training and certifying dogs and their humans to help people in need in hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and other facilities. So, if your dog loves people, remains calm in unpredictable situations, and is a whiz with basic obedience skills — consider signing up for an evaluation! 🐶🥰🐾

Our very own Dr. Amy Onderdonk and her Good Dog, Augie, regularly visit a local nursing home/rehab center. As Dr. O puts it, “Augie can draw out even the most withdrawn, non-verbal residents. During one visit to the dementia floor, Augie made fast friends with one particular woman. I watched them have a quiet “conversation” that only they seemed to understand, but I could see the woman repeatedly mouth the words “I love you,” as she cradled Augie’s head in her hands.”

“Augie also visits a processing center for undocumented families seeking asylum, where she always makes a beeline to the kids! They giggle when she gives paw and plants kisses on their faces, and she just loves their gentle hugs. As they’re petting her, many of these kids tell me about the dogs and cats they had to leave behind.”

“We also participate in a middle school program aimed at boosting confidence and self-esteem in kids who come from challenging backgrounds. It’s so clear how the happy, non-judgmental, affectionate presence of a dog instantly lowers stress! Augie seems to sense which kids need her the most on any given day — her physical contact visibly calms them and provides comfort and love. One of my favorite moments was seeing her fall asleep with her head on one of the children’s laps.”

Meet Dewey the Basenji - isn't he gorgeous? A few fun facts about this breed: 1. Basenjis descend from an ancient breed of dogs originating in Africa. 2. Despite their nickname as the "Barkless Dog," Basenjis vocalize in yodels and howls rather than barks, due to a uniquely-shaped larynx that means their vocal cords can't move the way they do in other dog breeds. 3. While most other dog breeds may have two or more breeding seasons per year, intact female Basenjis go into heat only once per year, similar to dingoes. 4.
