Been a busy week starting last Saturday’s blast of a rainstorm that happened while we were in Kent seeing a show! We came home to find it had rained and we were thrilled ,then we got up the next day and found that lots of plants had blown down, sunflowers, dahlias and broom corn got the worst of it but generally speaking it could have been worse. Most of the sunflowers were cuttable, the broomcorn stood back up by itself and I’ve spent the week staking up dahlias. These must be the dog days of summer, and national dog day so here’s Chopper using June as a pillow and White Claw starting to look pregnant! She has hidden it well for 5weeks but now she’s really starting to show, and she’s eating anything in sight. Stay cool😎

Thank you all for coming to our local farm market on Saturday! We appreciate your support!

Hi farm market friends! Been a busy week,Tuesday and Wednesday were spent in Michigan at Raker nursery (where our lisianthus plugs are started)for the Association of Specialty Cut Flowers regional conference followed by a trip to Walters Gardens near Holland to see some perennial bed inspiration! The two giant rows of hardy (blue)agapanthus and the hardy red Crape Myrtle were quite awesome. Tomorrow is national farmers market day,we’ll expect to see you all there!😆😆

Say hi to the Claw and her new mate Pickles! All the stars aligned and we found the perfect boy at the right time after our previous pick canceled on the day it was supposed to happen! It’s easy to take biological functions for granted when you have a great girl like Junebug but this last year has been a challenge, dealing with breeders and dogs ,nothing is guaranteed. We kept the Claw because we wanted to keep Junes bloodline going, she has such perfect temperament. At 40 lbs she is also the smallest of Junes pups. She successfully mated with Pickles twice and hopefully we’ll have puppies in a couple months! On the not so great side of things Karen and I both picked up a nasty upper respiratory virus over the last two weeks,Karen has been in bed most of this week but is back among the living recently. Flowers are doing well except for all the gladiolus that came back from previous yrs. We thought we would have 1000 or more but we failed to treat them for thrips(a tiny black worm) and they all are toast. Fortunately the hundreds we planted this yr have been treated and will be fine. Back in the day growers would soak the bulbs in Lysol to discourage thrips. In spite of our problems, life is great and it’s an honor to be able to do what we do! See youall at the Granville Mrkt tomorrow and thanks so much for making Cat Run possible!

Feeling fortunate for the half hour of rain today, just what we needed after the seed planting this morning. Lilies are really starting to bloom,we’ll have lots of them tomorrow along with hydrangeas and smoke trees and much more. Do any of our birder friends know who this cute little guy is,he or she has no fear of humans and keep an eye out for whatever I stir up. The little red ,white, and blue flowers are another kind of phlox that blooms after the creeping phlox and before the tall garden phlox. Happy Friday friends!

Sarah Bernhrdt peonies are later than all the rest this year, extending peonie season by a week! One of the oldest and most common peonies, she’s one of the best cuts and a real star, just like her namesake.

Loving this growing season so far, some of our perennials are blooming for the first time. This penstemon has beautiful maroon foliage ,the giant white persicaria has doubled in size since last year and although the white orlaya is an annual it re-seeds itself every year.

When I made a post yesterday about a lonely bouquet I just wanted to give you a glimpse into our world. Our real problem this time of year is trying to keep enough flowers in the farm store for the weekend when most people want them. Please come and see us at the Granville farm market on Saturday mornings if you need flowers for the weekend. Our friends at Moon Maiden and Curly Girl offer other choices too and it can be quite the flower market as things get going! Our first lilies are just over a week from blooming,we farmers live on faith,we’ve spent almost $2000 and haven’t sold the first stem yet! Late in the spring the wholesale people start giving us deals to make room for fall,we bought some Bridezilla Itoh peonies that we are going to sell for the same $12 we paid as a little perk for our customers (only 6). We saved a small mountain of dahlia tubers from last year and will be selling unnamed varieties for $1 each and now is the time to plant. Looking forward to a dry day tomorrow!!! See you then😀

Many beautiful flowers for tomorrow’s market unfortunately it’s supposed to rain from 8-12 😵😵☹️😝. Fortunately this is the Granville market and Granville always shows up! No one appreciates it more than small farms like us,we’re slaves to the weather everyday so why should Saturdaybe any different Have a beautiful Friday and don’t forget to look for the northern lights tonight. Hmm,I wonder if there’s any folklore about planting by the northern liights?

Just over a week ago we had frost ,now it’s mid July!😵 flowers are exploding, tree peony bloomed all at once, fortunately the rest of our peonies are in the cooler, which decided to stop cooling yesterday morning. $400 later we’re frigid again and the snowball viburnums and lilacs are happy again. The mid eighties are dangerous for all the little seedlings in their tiny cells in black plastic trays, some will get watered four times a day as we race to get them in the ground now that it’s safe (frost not looking likely). We have some beautiful dianthus blooming now, they’re commonly called pinks, not because of their color, but because the petals look like they have been cut with pinking shears! We’re really looking forward to the first outdoor market of the year and seeing humans again, farm life can be isolating and we’re starting to talk to our dogs like they’re people🤪 The blue flowers in the pics are flax. Time to get back to it,have a beautiful day!

Our Coral Charm peonies are blooming earlier than usual, meanwhile we spent the day preparing for the annual Newark Catholic fundraiser, they love their flowers and we love the challenge of doing a big venue. This year is especially fluffy with lots of hydrangeas, viburnums and big ruffly roses! We’re now just a week away from the first outdoor farm market of the year ,can’t wait to see all of it,customers, vendors, and of course our four legged friends!

Flowers come in so many shapes, lots of discs and trumpets, but these Dutch irises are certainly unique. It’s hard to comprehend the amount of time that this flower and its pollinators took to evolve in some mutually beneficial relationship. This is the earliest we have ever had these bloom for us. Summer temps in Brazil reached 107,I saw a preview of a new Conan O Brian show,he was in Thailand and it was another all time high of 109. We have to stop burning 🔥. On that happy note we have beautiful spring bouquets at the Fredonia farm store.

Monday flowers are pretty Iris & Tulip bouquets. Cheerfullness daffodils too!
