Something going on outback! One rabbit and they all turn back to wild carnivores ! Little pinky is the small girl from our litter and her color is changing, she’s such a beautiful little puppy,so smart and slightly cautious compared to her sister she got more of the poodle genes. We’re calling her sister Iris and she is a little more Lab like,a little bigger and more rambunctious but with a silky coat of big loose curls. Just like her sister she’s so smart,we’ve taught her not to climb on things and I’ll say no and she’ll sit down and look at me and bark once, defiantly! So awesome to see their personalities developing. These two sweet girls are still looking for their forever home ,PM us if interested We’ll be at this Saturday’s indoor farmers market Saturday with fresh cut wreaths and Christmas themed glass art. Stay warm!

Thanks for all the well wishes and support!!! I’m doing great and almost wishing we were at the Thanksgiving market in Granville this morning 😆 looks like Ohio has made its way back to its cold grey self,it sure was a nice run of sunny days. Sending best wishes to all the road warrior venders trying to stay warm! Get out and support their hard work and thanks again 😎. Been a great yr for winterberry holly,we’re putting more in the Fredonia farm store today!

Here we are at week 8,a time we dread because it’s time to find homes for the three girls that aren’t spoken for. We wish we could keep them all,it’s just getting to be fun as their personalities start to show. In the video are Pinky (collar color) and Curly girl with the curliest tail and coat of this litter and the third girl looks just like Pinky but a little larger. Pinky looks like the smallest of the group and has stolen my heart already! She is so sweet and spunky This litter of puppies are so smart and learn so quickly, they immediately started using the wood shavings in their box as soon as they were exposed to it. Now they spend their days on our back deck and all use an old dirt area to do their business. The poodle/lab combination makes a great dog, many people tell us they are the best dog they’ve ever had, although, just like people, everyone is different. Meanwhile,I go in to get my back fixed in a couple days and Karen will have her hands full for a while. We’re trying to prepare for all the eventualities and are about as ready as we can be,most of the loose ends are tied up and ready for winter. We’re still putting some flowers in the Fredonia farm store, the killing freeze hasn’t happened yet, enjoy the nice weather while it’s here, the grey skies of Ohio seem inevitable, yet it seems like that’s changing.

Charm gets wild and wooly with the puppies.! She’s been extra spunky since the puppies have become something to play with,I’m expecting her to go into heat soon. Meanwhile, back surgery that was moved back has now been moved up(?) to this coming week. On another note this warm weather isn’t doing much to send plants into dormancy, specifically evergreen trees that we use for wreaths. New growth needs to stop and the plants need to go into their “winter protection mode”that will help protect them from the desiccating conditions of winter. We can simulate some of that by using products like Wiltpruff that will seal in moisture but it’s better to have greens that are ready. Once again we’re praying for rain,we got a little yesterday but hopefully things will normalize. Everyday I look out at the stunning blue sky and can’t believe it’s Ohio!! The solar panels love it,this is their 15th yr,the yr they paid for themselves. They are warranted for 25yrs and their lifespan is estimated around 50 yrs. Just some real numbers with no disinformation which is rampant, mostly from fossil fuel interests. Well back to watching puppies !

Thanks so much for all the help Sunday! We cleaned up and dug hundreds of dahlias,it’s great to be part of a community. Today was supposed to be surgery day but life had other plans. As Sunday went on I got more and more worn out for no apparent reason, started getting sick and wound up at the ER with food poisoning/stomach infection and am just now back to the land of the living! We had lunch in Utica Saturday and I sent my food back, not soon enough I guess At the same time Costco sent us a warning not to eat the burritos we bought there, and something about rotisserie chicken. There seems to be a lot of food born illness around lately,Karen is an expert at food safety after 20+ yrs in the Kroger deli she always sides with caution. Choose your restaurants cautiously. Meanwhile, life goes on and we’re back to praying for rain. I talked to Joe Latshaw Sunday about how this summer was for honeybees and he told me they’ve had to supplement their diet with 9,000 pounds of sugar, and those were the lucky bees, their wild cousins weren’t as lucky. Did you know that forests actually make it rain as well as producing oxygen? Both rain and oxygen are down around the world,I see a correlation…

We’re starting our busy day of trying to get our farm ready for winter before I go in for surgery this week. Any volunteers who want to help us are more than welcome and greatly appreciated! Enjoy another beautiful fall day! If you haven’t been out to see the fall foliage licking county is incredible this year,it’s like the whole area is orange!!

Hi farm friends! It’s been a crazy week. First about bittersweet,it’s a great fall decoration but we won’t grow it anymore,if you are an observant person you can find it around, often times it will involve a tree that is going down from the weight of this Chinese invader. I have found the vines growing around our property along with the highly invasive maiden grass. I regret bringing these invasives to our property. All that being said we will have bittersweet at the market,it’s beautiful but just needs to be disposed of properly. Now for some big news for us. After 18 yrs as a flower farmer I did some damage to my back last year. After a year of steroid injections my VA doctor said it’s time to move to the next step. As much as I love the VA,the “pain clinic “is the busiest part of the Columbus hospital. My wait to see my doctor is six months. Just over a week ago I did something that made the pain twice as bad. Now that I’m old enough for Medicare I went to see some doctors at Ortho Neuro where I used to go yrs ago and got evaluated. The back surgeon came in with x-rays and showed me how my lower vertebrae had shifted to the side and was way out of alignment with the rest of my spine. It was so obvious yet the doctors I trusted at the VAnever saw it. There is the possibility that the shift just happened but it’s doubtful. What it all means is I’ll be getting a couple vertebrae realigned and fused together, the bad disc between them will get removed, right now it’s surrounding and strangling my sciatic nerve. It’s going to be a slow recovery while the bone hopefully grows and heals, the doctor says I can play football when it’s done😆. Our kind of flower farming is pretty much all manual labor,at our age we are just about done but our plan is for one more yr. We’ll just have to see how it goes. As far as this yr goes we’re in pretty good shape but we do have a few jobs that need to be done and I’m not capable. Some of the other farms we follow on social media have volunteer days a couple times a yr as their customers value them enough to help out. Sunday will be our day for cleaning up and getting ready for winter as well as digging dahlias and we hope some folks will join us and help out. Even an hour or two would be a huge help. Thanks for reading this,it’s not the kind of post I want to make ,like puppies and flowers, but it’s the reality of the blue collar life we have chosen and still love.
