When you use Blue Hen's verterinary services, you are supporting a local small business (owned 100% by Dr. Gruber). We reinvest what we earn into capital that allows us to expand the services we offer our clientele, whether that be in the form of continuing education for Dr. Gruber (human capital) or a digital x-ray machine (physical capital)!

Do y’all remember sweet Pearl? She was adopted from Montgomery County Animal Shelter Texas during the Mega Adoption event in June. Pearl had tested positive for heartworm and with treatment costing $1,000-$1,500, we were worried this might prevent her chances of being adopted. We are sponsoring her treatment, and she received the first of three injections this past week.

Heartworm treatment consists of 30 days of an oral medication, followed by 30 days of waiting. Then, the patient receives an injection deep in the back muscle. After 30 more days, another injection is given followed by the third and final injection 24 hours later. Six months later, a heartworm test is administered to determine if the treatment was effective.

This treatment is physically painful for the dog and expensive for pawrent so we highly recommend keeping your dog on a heartworm preventative. We offer both a monthly chew (NexGard Plus, also covers flea & tick) and an annual injection (ProHeart).

We want our pups’ hearts full of love, not worms, so contact us to figure out which preventative works best for you and your pup!

An IgG test checks if maternal antibodies from the mare were passed to the foal through the colostrum. This test needs to be conducted within 24 hours of foaling as the foal’s digestive tract won’t be able to absorb colostrum shortly thereafter (and the mare won’t produce much more).

A mini snuggle session was part of this new foal evaluation today.

Update: it happened, Goldie was adopted!!! We stopped by Brandywine’s Mega Adoption event at the Bob Carpenter Center on University of Delaware’s campus today. We fell in love with Goldie who is available to adopt today for only $35. She does have heartworm but Blue Hen Veterinary Services is offering to cover her heartworm treatment if someone within the area adopts her today. Mega is open until 5:00pm. If you fall in love with another dog (over 1 year old, or over 35lbs), we are offering a free initial house call and wellness exam for the adopted dog. https://www.megaadopt.com
