HOW TO CARE FOR HEDGEHOGS

Hedgehogs need to be kept in a well ventilated cage no glass or plastic tanks or tubs, a medium indoor rabbit cage 30 long by 18 or larger with removable plastic bottom is perfect for hedgies, NO wire bottom cages it is not good for their feet. Only one level cages hedgehogs can fall off and get hurt, Water bottles are best no water bowls they will tip them over and get dirty bedding in it. You might read on some web sites that water bottles can chip hedgehog teeth, I have never had this problem with hedgehogs breaking their teeth on bottles and I have been using them for over 10 years. Hedgies can be litter box trained if you get a baby hedgehog keep in mind they are not good at controlling where and when they use the bathroom so litter box training them will not be easy. What I usually do is pick up the soiled bedding and put it in the litter box and they will in time understand this is where they go for potty. It's best if you have a different kind of bedding in the litter box so they do not get confused, I use pine bedding for their cage and shredded Aspin for litter it's softer and helps with the odor. Bedding best used for hedgehogs are Aspin, care fresh, pine, or Kiln dried do NOT use ceder wood chips it will kill them! You need to get them a plastic or wood rabbit house to sleep in and a chinchilla sized run around wheel. There are different kinds of wheels you can get for them, I use the mesh wire and silent spinners. Other wheels are Comfort wheels and silent spinner comfort wheels are about $20.00 Silent Spinners are $30.00. You will read that mesh wheels are not good for hedgehogs because their feet can get stuck in the square spaces, me and other hedgehog owners I know have never had this problem. As for food never buy pretty pets or browns hedgehog food it's basically the fast food of hedgehog food. A lot of hedgehog owners including me feed them cat food it has more nutrition and you get more for your money. A 5lb bag of cat food last me a few months with all my hedgehogs just make sure it's a good quality brand I feed chicken soup cat and kitten food. Other good brands are natural balance, wellness, Tast of the wild. DO NOT FEED THEM blue buffalo. I know they say it is the best brand out there but I swear something they put in their food kills hedgehogs.Chicken soup cat food you can get a 5 pound bag for about $13.00. Keep away from ANY cat food you may find in grocery stores such as wall-mart, Safeway, BJs things like that because they usually only have bad brands of pet food such as Friskies, Whiskas, Meow Mix, IAMS, Fancy Feast ect. Bad treats for hedgehogs fruit and nuts they can get stuck in teeth and chock hedgehogs, Good treats wax warms, meal warms from pet store, dry crickets not the ones outside. Hedgehogs need their nails cut about one a week and they need baths at least 3 times a month I use Aveeno baby body wash cleansing therapy it must be scentless with colloidal oatmeal, it helps hedgehogs with dry skin you can use an old or new tooth brush to scrub them, I give mine baths in the sink with warm water. Hedgehogs hibernate so you must keep the room they live in around 75° they also have heating pads you can put under cages if you put a clean wash rag or small towel in where they sleep you can help keep them warm. Do not put the heating pad inside the cage they can get burns. Hedgehog Illnesses, Hedgehogs are prone to cancer of all types I have lost two hedgehogs from cancer and it is very sad knowing they are sick and you can’t do anything to help. Hedgehogs can also develop WSH or Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome Is when a hedgehog losses control of his or her muscle control. It will first appear as wobbly when the hedgehog is trying to stand still and then will get worse and he will lose complete control of his muscles, WHS is like MS in humans and sadly it has no cure. Dry Skin, There are a few things that can give your hedgehog dry skin. Your hedgehog might have mites! Just because your hedgehog has mites does not mean you are not caring for them well or your home is dirty, Mites could come from an infected bag of wood bedding and they are pretty easy to get rid of. First thing you want to do is remove your hedgehog from its environment take everything he was in contact with and put it out side and clean it with bleach and hot water, I would throw out the bedding and tell the company who sells it that you got an infected bag if that is the case. if your hedgehog has ear mites or skin mites you can use Revolution and give your hedgehogs a bath with water and olive oil just make sure you soak your hedgehog in the oil and water bath then wash them off with the aveeno baby wash, DO NOT give hedgehogs a bath when you start using the revolution treatment do the bath first then start the treatment. The revolution is 1 dose every 7 days on the center of their head that is where they cannot lick themselves the amount you use is 2CCs. Revolution will get rid of any type of mites your hedgehog might have. Also check all your other pets to see if they have mites and take your hedgehogs to the vet and any other pet who have been infected. Diet can also give your hedgehog dry skin if you have your hedgehog on poor food. Winter or Fall can give your hedgehog skin problems as well mine get itchy around this time of year they just need more baths with aveeno or you could try a few drops of Vitamin E oil on shoulders, back, and butt. Below is a link to where you can get the revolution meds =)

Green P**p, a lot of things can give hedgehogs green stool. Stress such as a new environment, Change in diet or water I would not be to concerned if green p**p unless it goes on for more than 3 days or if your hedgehog stops eating or drinking then you need to take them to the vet. When feeding your hedgehogs cat food the Protein level should be between 28-35% Fat content should be between 10-15% Make sure it is something that is chicken or turkey based for easier digestion. something fish or beef as the main ingredient will upset their stomachs. Having fish in the ingredients is ok such as salmon just as long as it is not in the first 3 ingredients. the food I feed my hedgehogs is Chicken soup dry for adults. Crude Protein is 34% Crude fat is 20% as long as your hedgehogs are active and have a wheel in their cage and get plenty of playtime out
Adopting hedgehogs from me

PLEASE! understand that once you pick up your hedgehog no refunds will be given if you no longer want or cannot care for the hedgehog(s)
you have adopted from me I can take them back in. Only same s*x hedgehogs go to the same home,if you want more then one hedgehog from me you will get all males or all females. When picking up your hedgehog you will get a small zip lock bag of kitten food for each hedgie please remember it's cash only cash only in exact change, I do not take 100 dollar bills. Hedgehog babies will be adopted out at 7 or 8 weeks old depending on when they are weaned, at 6 weeks old you need to set a time and date to pick up your baby. If we set a pick up time for you to pick up your hedgehog and you do not show I will assume you no longer want him or her you will loose the deposit you put down on them and the baby will go to a new owner, I will not be happy sitting around waiting for you only to find out you decided not to show when I could of been doing other things. a 50$ non refundable deposit is needed to put a hold on each hedgehog your interested in
Hedgehog babies are 200.00 to 350.00 depending on colors patterns and markings. Rare ones are more the normal hedgehogs are 200 such as cinnamon pintos or chocolate pintos Albino hedgehogs are 300.00
Albino hedgehogs are not like most albino animals as in they do NOT
have special needs or health issues, they are not more sensitive to light
then other hedgehogs with color nor do they have low immunity or particular
susceptibility to disease due to the Gene mutation.
