Days are starting to become shorter, temperatures are getting cooler, and summer is coming to a end.

ALL LESSONS, CONSULTATIONS, AND DAY TRAINS FOR TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY ARE CANCELLED! First and foremost, our focus is always the safety of our dogs, both resident and our lesson dogs. While our facility is very well cooled, we don’t want to bring in any extra body heat or to work dogs with these temperatures. Halsey has sent out emails to everyone with a scheduled appointment this week to inform, but all lessons and day trains are CANCELLED through Thursday. Board and train check ins and drop offs as well as boarding pickups and drop offs are not affected by these cancellations. At this time, Friday and Saturday are not affected, but final decisions for Friday and Saturday will be made by Tuesday morning. ……………………………………………………………….. Keep your dogs safe this week! Remember to do walks either very early in the morning or late in the evening. To check pavement temperature, use the palm of your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Frozen bones are a go to for us to help keep cool, as well as frozen puzzle bowls with water or goats milk and some treats. …………………………………………………………………….We apologize for any inconvenience, but our priority is always keeping your dog safe! Some really important tips for the upcoming few days (and always!) from our good friends at Pit Bull Pen!

As we are heading into the biggest lost pet day of the year we here at The Pit Bull Pen would like to remind everyone of the importance of loss prevention. Even dogs who have never run before can be startled by fireworks and escape. Shelters and rescues are already at capacity and the places to house the Independence Day escapees will be seriously limited. Thinking ahead can help prevent so much stress.

🐾 Put on a properly fitting collar with tags with up to date contact information. If you don’t have tags use painter’s tape to make an identification tag or write your phone number directly on their collar. GPS collars are fantastic for real time tracking.
🐾 Microchips work. Not only do they help return lost dogs quicker but they are a clear way to prove ownership. Be sure to register the chip and keep the information up to date.
🐾 Know and have handy identifying information. Be able to describe your dog’s age, size, and identifying marks. Have photos you can quickly access that show their face, full body, appearance in different lights and with and without haircuts.
🐾 Check your fence line for weak spots. Clip a carabiner on all gates. Put a baby gate on exterior doors. Use a drag leash or long cable lead with proper supervision.
🐾 Prepare a safe place inside your house ahead of time. Try a crate if they are crate trained or a quiet room with music for background noise for them. Even a non destructive dog can cause damage in their fear, dog proof their area. Even if they are regularly outside dogs consider securing them in an out building for the night.
🐾 Talk to your vet about medication or calming treats. Some dogs respond well to a Thundershirt or similar. Provide mental stimulation such as a stuffed Kong or snuffle mat.

OUT OF OFFICE!

In case you didn't know, Halsey, our office manager is a dog sport event photographer as well! This weekend, she will be out of town photographing a barn hunt trial with Pacific NW Barn Hunt. If you're free this weekend and want to see some fun action, go up, wrangle some rats or volunteer, and learn all about this fun sport!

Halsey will be returning on Tuesday, May 30 to respond to all of your emails. Those who have dogs who are currently staying with us or will be dropped off for the holiday weekend, please be on the lookout for an email.
