Dr. Root was doing Dr. Root things while hosting the Sherwood Bowmen (Sherwood High School) last week!

Mr. Dunn and his Ag Science and Veterinary classes saw late term pregnancy equine ultrasounding, attempted fetal sexing, discussed what it takes to be a veterinarian, got a crash 101 course on reproduction and foaling, and got a meet-n-greet with Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo!

Looking forward to seeing this great group and potential next-generation veterinarians grow and succeed!

"Chucky"
2023 15.2hh Bay Thoroughbred Gelding
RAGING TIGER x Go to the Alter (Lucky Pulpit)
Chucky is a Washington bred gelding by RAGING TIGER, ( 3/4 brother to millionaire and solid California sire SMILING TIGER), and out of a multiple winning $91k winning mare, who is a full sibling to a $125k winner, and a half sibling to a $168k earner. Chucky has been started on the ground and ridden in the arena but should be considered extremely green. He suffered an injury last fall during breaking and was unable to be finished at the time. He’s sound now, with zero long-term concerns. Chucky grew up in a herd on 20 acres. Suitable for all disciplines, racing, sport or pleasure. NWRS nominated for this summer’s Emerald Downs stakes races. He is ready to be finished, and head to the track or into a new career of your choice!
$4,000 obo. Owned by OAKHURST.

"Floyd"
2022 16.3hh Bay Thoroughbred Gelding
STAY THIRSTY x Pandura (Midnight Lute)
Floyd is an in-your-pocket and growing teenager. He had one start last summer and his effort did not reflect results. Under normal circumstances, we would let him grow up and try again, however, it's time to downsize the herd a bit, therefore, Floyd is available for his next career. Grew up in a herd on 20 acres, Floyd was aggressively treated for stifle swelling as a yearling. There was zero lameness reported all through winter breaking, spring and summer training and racing. August 2024 X-rays available for release to veterinary professionals after you meet him and a conditional offer is accepted. We believe Floyd to be suitable for racing, sport or pleasure.
PRICED TO SELL! $2,500 obo. Owned by OAKHURST.

"Dani"
2017 16h Bay Thoroughbred Mare
GIACOMO x Angels Can Be Wild (Wild and Wicked)
Dani is a multiple time race winner who was last raced in 2022 with LTE of nearly $50,000, and finishing in the top-three 16/25! She is easy to be around and is showing incredible potential as a saddle horse in VERY limited recent rides. At this time, we would not recommend Dani as a turn-key beginner horse, but with some training, we feel she will check some boxes for riders of multiple skill sets. Dani has successfully foaled, but sadly lost that foal as a youngster to no fault of hers or the foals. Dani has calcification and thickening in, on and around her front ankles. She has had ankle chip surgery, and does not currently flex or travel unsound. Suitable for breeding, pleasure riding, and companion horse.
SELLS WITH A COMPLIMENTARY 2025 RAGING TIGER Stallion Fee! ($700 value). Excludes board, vet, & booking fee. She is currently in the barn and under lights getting ready for the 2025 breeding season.
NEW PRICE! $1,500 obo ~ Owner says sell, but a great home is a must! Selling for a CLIENT.

FOALING SEASON IS HERE!

Proper planning will likely save you time, emotion, and money! Be ready when your little one hits the ground, and have a plan!

Track birth, standing, nursing and all the 1st step details to share with your Veterinarian.

Assuming proper placental passage within a few hours, and the foal appears healthy, have your Veterinarian out 18-24 hours after birth to do a proper New Foal Exam, give shots, examine the placenta, and test IGG - Leave a message or call at 8AM M-F, 9AM Sat, or the ER line during reasonable hours Sundays to get scheduled. *All Standard New Foal Exams for breeding done at Oakhurst that live in our service area incur no additional emergency fees - we work to get your foal seen!

We STRONGLY believe in Hyper-Immune Plasma and recommend 24 hour and 30 day administrations! Is it 100% guaranteed - of course not - However, we have personally seen strong and notable benefits to the majority of patients - Consider it a cross between investing/insuring your foals' future!

A look back on a 2024 Blog Post by Dr. Schumacher!

IgG testing in foals is crucial for evaluating passive transfer of maternal antibodies, ensuring proper immune protection and reducing the risk of infectious diseases in the early stages of life. Plasma is important in foals with low IgG levels as it provides a vital source of antibodies, aiding in

Oakhurst Thoroughbreds Racing Fan Club is ALL-IN on this one for our thoroughbred racing!

RAGING TIGER is producing flashy & athletic, forward but willing, well balanced and muscled offspring - First foals have been broke and are coming two-year-olds. He's got all the DNA and pedigree to be arguably considered the best value on the West Coast!

This is likely the last year of the special introductory stud fee - we want your help getting babies on the ground - he will likely be going up 50%+ in 2026.

🔥 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 🔥

Don't believe what you see and hear on TV 📺

Regardless of what RIP and Yellowstone tell you, we DO NOT recommend giving Banamine (Flunixin) via Intramuscular (IM) administration. 💉

There is a very real risk of abscess formation at the injection site that can be severe and life-threatening.

What else can you do if you are not comfortable with IV shots? Liquid Banamine can be given safely via oral administration.

And pushing that much Dexamethasone?! Don't even get us started . . .that's another post for another day.

How cool is this?! In today's episode of "Where in the World" meets "It's Small Horse World" . . . Meet "Birdie" - The mare in the middle!

Birdie's mom (shire) was bred to GIACOMO (thoroughbred) at Oakhurst Equine Veterinary Services, then she was foaled, raised, and prepped by her owner - who sold her to the great State of Texas - shown here, patrolling the grounds of the State Capitol!

Looking good Birdie - Way to represent Giacomo, 2005 Kentucky Derby Winner, in a whole new light!

***If you have stories you would like to share about foals by Giacomo, Grindstone, or other Oakhurst Thoroughbreds Racing Fan Club bred, trained or raised horses, or bred, rehabbed or treated by Oakhurst Equine Veterinary Services, please send to [email protected]!

TODAY'S DEMONSTRATION OF "DONKEYS BEING DONKEYS"

No good deed shall go unpunished. "Barley" decided to get a little too up-close and personal with his slow feeder ball . . . and he became one with it!

Barley is a sweetheart of a 2yo miniature donkey, however, was slightly uncooperative for his owner after the early morning mishap. With the help of sedation, and some handy tool-work, Barley was back on the run, unburdened once more! Okay, it was more like a slow saunter over to breakfast!

Thank you to his owners for allowing Oakhurst to assist, and Dr. Magorian for being the ultimate Donkey whisperer. ❤
