I try not to have favorites at this stage in development, but I'm keeping an eye on this one. πŸ‘€ πŸ€©πŸ†πŸ€ž

As you can see here, I keep a pretty broad range of ages together and once a week I will pull the oldest crew out and move them into a more spacious pen with fewer birds to finish growing out. Sometimes mixing in different looking birds can lead to some curiosity pecking so I do have to watch for that. For example, my brahma chicks think the sebright toes are mealworms and the older sebrights love to peck the foot feathers on the new brahmas so I have to keep them separated. Everyday I learn something new myself with these birds!

Sporting their new ABA bling! πŸ’ This year every bird will receive a seamless permanent legband from the American Bantam Association. These bands have their birth year as well as individual identifying numbers to keep good records πŸ“ of each bird. Happy Healthy babies here!

This trio is a good representation of how I try to use birds that balance each other out with their strengths and weaknesses. The females have matured to be a little too short-backed and like to "over show" with their heads too close to their tails, one more so than the other. But also a lot to like including their wing carriage and clean lacing. They also lay consistently, but they don't always do it with ease and blood on their eggs isn't uncommon. This male, raised by me last year, is a little long and while I did show him and some judges appreciate that he's not over done, I would like him a little tighter in the back. I appreciate his width that he carries all the way back along with the Mulberry in his comb and wattles and hope that he is a good fit for these hens to produce some showy offspring that have a little larger of a frame and body that's more conducive to laying. I think all three birds are beautiful and bring a lot to the table, it's just a matter of putting the right ingredients together to hopefully make a future champion that is a good representation of the breed.

Happy to have a nice space to allow the birds some garden time. Always be very cautious of hawks and note, I only do this when I am out there with them.

🌟Helpful Tip🌟Apple Cider Vinegar 🍎 is essential here! I add this to the water for my chicks every time I change it out. It is good for their gut health and also keeps the water fresher and keeps that smelly water away that we are all familiar with. Make sure to use one "with the mother" as that is all the good stuff! I purchase it at Aldi for about $4, which is the best deal I've found. Just a splash will do. If I had to guess, about a half teaspoon per quart.
