This baby raccoon was running around in traffic not sure where his mama was 😞 A Good Samaritan stopped, picked him up, and brought him to us. The Good Samaritan was afraid that he might have been injured. He’s well, thank goodness, and will be going to one of our rehabbers later today, who will keep him long enough until he’s old enough to be released. 🦝

A week ago today, along with NYPD, we co-hosted Working Together: Puppies and Police, an all-day symposium to inform police, fire, university, and public safety departments about the benefits of adding a facility dog to their ranks in order to support employee well-being and to improve community relations.

The program was full of speakers giving first-hand accounts of their experiences and how our pups have positively impacted their departments and communities.

Over 50 departments across the tri-state area were represented, but the true stars of the show were of course our contingent of dogs who are out there doing the work to help so many communities in so many ways.

If you are (or know of) a police, fire or public safety department interested in a Puppies Behind Bars facility dog, visit our website to learn more: https://puppiesbehindbars.com/facility-dogs-for-police-departments/

Attendance was made possible by a generous grant from Frog Crossing Foundation, Inc. North Caldwell, NJ.

A tired puppy is a happy, well-socialized puppy. Phil is on his way back to his puppy-raiser after a fun-filled outing with one of our devoted volunteers. Exercise is very important for our puppies to maintain good health, and exposure to varying sounds, sights and smells helps them gain the confidence they need to be successful working dogs.

Happy July 4th! What more fitting way to honor our Day of Independence than with a shout-out to Hero, Tessa and Balto (first, second and third dogs from left)--PBB-trained EDCs, newly graduated to the MA State Police. Along with their handlers, they will bravely keep their noses to the ground to keep our home safe and free. That is certainly something to celebrate!

Wishing you a Happy July 4th weekend. Here's to spending it surrounded by your favorites.

Pre-fledge broad winged hawk, picked up this afternoon from a long drive away. This time of year I interrogate Good Sams because I don't want to kidnap wild babes, and also don't want to leave them on the ground for a bazillion predators (including maggots). And I have dozens of hungry mouths at home, left until I return home.
This broad-wing has been on the ground near it's parents and nest for a week (fell out too soon!). Yesterday, a wild turkey hen aggressively attacked this one. She had a bunch of pullets with her. The home owner moved the hen away, before a second attack.
This hawk is a pre-fledge, unable to fly, too young, flight feathers not fully grown yet, still dependent on parents dropping food or feeding it. Good news, no maggots, no open wounds. Favoring one side, probably from the wild turkey attack. Stressed out, hungry, too thin. I think this little will be fine for release in a few weeks or more.
Donations towards feeder mice and quail for the juvie raptors i currently have in rehab would be a huge help. Or if someone can clone me, please do. Just for a couple months.

A snippet from our NYC volunteer training, a two-day comprehensive session, during which PBB staff teach incoming volunteers all about handling the dogs, what commands the puppies know, how to read a dog’s body language, among other valuable tips. Volunteers are essential to our puppy-socializing efforts and helping them become the best working dogs they can be.
