Pre-fledge broad winged hawk, picked up this afternoon from a long drive away. This time of year I interrogate Good Sams because I don't want to kidnap wild babes, and also don't want to leave them on the ground for a bazillion predators (including maggots). And I have dozens of hungry mouths at home, left until I return home.
This broad-wing has been on the ground near it's parents and nest for a week (fell out too soon!). Yesterday, a wild turkey hen aggressively attacked this one. She had a bunch of pullets with her. The home owner moved the hen away, before a second attack.
This hawk is a pre-fledge, unable to fly, too young, flight feathers not fully grown yet, still dependent on parents dropping food or feeding it. Good news, no maggots, no open wounds. Favoring one side, probably from the wild turkey attack. Stressed out, hungry, too thin. I think this little will be fine for release in a few weeks or more.
Donations towards feeder mice and quail for the juvie raptors i currently have in rehab would be a huge help. Or if someone can clone me, please do. Just for a couple months.
