Today is National Chocolate Day. This is a fun day for us humans but a very scary day for our pets. Even small amounts of chocolate can be toxic to our pets. The severity of symptoms can vary based on the size of the dog, the amount of chocolate, and the type of chocolate that was ingested.
If you are concerned about something your pet has ingested, please contact the Pet Poison Helpline.

Did you know that using puzzle feeders can help your pet with their weight loss journey? Just like with people, when we eat slower it allows our body to communicate the feeling of being full without over-eating. Kongs are one of many great ways to slow down the rate at which you pet eats (while also exercising their brain). Just be sure to watch the variety and amount of food used to stuff them to keep the calories within an acceptable limit.

Weight loss is easily broken down to calories consumed vs calories burned. First you have to look at the number of calories that your pet is consuming and look at ways to decrease that number. One easy way is to substitute a small portion of their food with a vegetable like green beans or carrots. On average 1/4 cup of dog food has between 80 and 110 calories. Meanwhile, a 1/4 cup of green beans have 7 calories, and a 1/4 cup of carrots have 25 calories.
As with any food change it is important to start off slow to make sure there are no GI issues.

A great alternative to high calorie treats are fruits and vegetables. While fruits and vegetables do have less calories, they should still be given in moderation to avoid GI upset.
Not all fruits and vegetables are safe for dogs, so be sure to do your research before introducing a new snack.

Through diet change and exercise she has been able to lose 9 lbs so far, look at that waistline! Keep up the good work Billie and thank you for all of the rescue volunteers!

Weight can play a major role in the health of your pet's joints. Overweight pets have increased joint stress which leads to pain and less activity before the cycle starts over. Weight and activity levels are the parts of the cycle where the owner has the ability to make a significant change to improve their pet's quality of life.
