⚠️ PSA: Protect Your Pets in Freezing Temperatures! ⚠️
With temperatures dropping into the single digits this week, it’s critical to keep your pets safe from the dangers of extreme cold. Here’s what pet owners need to know:
🐾 The Dangers:
• Frostbite & Hypothermia: Pets are at risk of frostbite on ears, tails, noses, and paws. Hypothermia can set in quickly, especially in freezing or wet conditions.
• Exposed Skin: Short-haired breeds and pets with thin fur are especially vulnerable to the cold.
• Outdoor Cats: Cats seeking shelter under cars for warmth may become trapped or injured. Always check under your vehicle before starting it.
• Ice and Salt Hazards: Ice can cut paw pads, and de-icing salts can irritate or burn them. Pets may ingest harmful chemicals when licking their paws.
🐾 Safety Tips for Dogs & Cats:
1. Bring Them Inside: Cats and dogs should not be left outdoors in freezing weather. If you must take dogs out, limit their time outside.
2. Provide Warmth: Use sweaters or coats for short-haired dogs. Make sure pets have warm bedding indoors, away from drafts.
3. Check Under Cars: Tap the hood of your car before starting it to avoid harming outdoor cats hiding underneath for warmth.
4. Protect Paws: Use pet booties or wipe their paws after outdoor walks to remove ice and salt.
5. Hydration Matters: Ensure water bowls remain unfrozen, whether indoors or out.
6. Watch for Signs of Cold Stress: Shivering, whining, hiding, lethargy, or difficulty walking are signs your pet is too cold. Bring them inside immediately.
7. Never Leave Pets in Cars: Cars can act as freezers in winter.
Pets are family—keep them safe, warm, and indoors during freezing weather! 🐾❤️
