About losing Morgan type and performance specific breeding.......

In yesterday's post, I mentioned some quotes from a Western Horsman article about 6666 breeding program. Today I am going to share a little more from that article. This quote was from one of the 6666 guys talking about Dr. Blodgett, who was in charge of the breeding program......

"He is especially mindful about conformational traits. That's where what we do might be different from discipline-specific production operations. I think that there are some conformational traits that get overlooked by a lot of people today in horse production that I think are very important. They get too focused on performance and are not careful enough about conformational traits, and that can create problems. For example some of these discipline-specific programs can get by with a horse that doesn't have a good back, or that doesn't have the stamina that we need. The ranch horses are really athletic and really stout. I think Glenn doesn't follow trends as much as the horse industry chases trends, and he's creating a trend here. That's reflected in the ranch's mares. We can experiment with stallions a little bit and not hurt our foundation. For example, Blodgett regularly breeds ranch mares to racing stallions and racing mares to ranch stallions, to constantly bring back size, bone, speed and stamina to the broodmare band, while keeping athletic ability and cow sense. Owning fast horses has always been something ranchers have taken pride in. Look back and you hear all the old stories about the match races between ranches on Sunday afternoons."

I agree with this 100%. The ranch will keep things real. Morgans have a unique style when it comes to working cows, and those of us that prefer that style will breed to keep that style. Otherwise, we would just go get a QH. If we only breed for performance, then yeah, it's possible that the western Morgan can end up with some of the same problems that other show horses have. In my opinion, most of the best and well rounded western performance QHs are also used for ranch work. AQHA actually rewards this with their Ranching Heritage Challenge.
This is why I prefer the reined cow horse competition. It's a test of versatility. And having the real ranch work to back it up at home, as the real testing grounds of surefootedness, endurance, and a cool head under pressure. That's the way to keep the show trends from screwing up the horse. Keep it real. And just go show off on the weekends.

(Horse pictured is Warhawk (Flyhawk x Sentola). He was a major sire for the Cross Ranch in Dubois, WY)

Been doing some research......
I am trying to put my finger on the source of cow sense in our old Morgan lines. I have noticed with my own herd that Shawalla Buck (Memphis Beau Brummell x Bettina Allen) seems to be a common thread with the ones I have that are more cowy. Looking at his parentage, his sire was by Sparbeau. It's hard to get more classicly ranch Morgan bred than Sparbeau. His sire was Linsley, who was a son of General Gates out of Sunflower Maid. General Gates needs no introduction and Sunflower Maid was an own daughter of Headlight Morgan. Headlight Morgan could be considered the father of the Morgan ranch horse. He was one of the important stallions that Richard Sellman chose to use for his breeding program in in Rochelle, Texas. The blood of Headlight Morgan can be found behind the AQHA champion stallion Two Eyed Jack. He was out of a mare named Triangle Tookie, who was out of Lady Hancock, out of Triangle Lady. This mare was by Redolent, a full Morgan stallion. Redolent was by Red Oak and of a Headlight Morgan daughter named Minnie K.

Now that is one small maternal line in a sea of other Quarter Horse lines, but I find it no small coincidence that I am also finding our present day Morgans with cow sense tracing back to these same lines.

Sparbeau has a few lines that survive today. The lines through Shawalla Buck are some, but he also had a grandson that has made a good impact on our ranch bred Morgans. Sparfield (Lee Spur x Kitty Spar Field) is a double Sparbeau grandson. He is the result of a half brother/half sister mating, both his sire and dam being by Dude Spar by Sparbeau. The linebreeding is even more intense than that. Both the dam on the paternal line and the dam of the maternal line are Sonfield daughters! And the amount of times that Querido is woven through that pedigree is amazing! You can find Sparfield behind some of the lines of Bryan Blatt and Westwind Morgans.

Querido and Sonfield, of course, were major stallions for Roland Hill in California. Mostly Querido daughters were bred back to Sonfield. Again, we see some amazing line breeding in action. Sonfield was the son of Querido's full brother, Mansfield.

In my opinion, our Morgans are about 30 years behind the Quarter Horse in breeding for Western Performance events like Reined Cow Horse. Our breed was there when the Quarter Horse began, quietly doing the ranch work in the really tough areas of the country. But then the Quarter Horse left us in the dust as those folks began a really focused program for ranch horses and western performance horses. A few of our good ranch heritage lines are still around, but it is high time we gathered those lines up, bred them to each other, tested them through use and competition and gave the western performance folks an alternative to the Quarter Horse for ranching and competition.

What are the top 3-4 things that you select for as a breeder and why, in order of priority?

Me: 1. Temperament, 2. Conformation and Movement, 3. Agility, 4. Cow Sense, 5. Speed

- Temperament 1st because I don’t care how great of a mover it is or how well conformed it is, if it has a crappy temperament, then the other two qualities are wasted. Great movement and conformation is only truly useful and enjoyable in a trainable, willing horse.

- Conformation and Movement go hand - in - hand. The conformation and movement I am focusing on is for the Ranch/Western Performance Horse.
○ Good bone, but not so much that they are clunky.
○ Endurance, but not at the expense of speed and agility.
○ Good withers and a good back to hold the saddle well and to take a lifetime of riding.
○ Deep heart girth for plenty of space for lungs.
○ Laid back shoulder with a neck that ties in deep into the shoulder/withers to be able to have long, comfortable strides that can carry you all day. The neck and shoulder conformation described also shifts the center of gravity back a bit so that the horse naturally carries himself behind more.
○ Strong coupling where the pelvis ties into the spine. This is the area analogous to a car's transmission. It doesn't matter how big the engine is (hindquarter), if the transmission is weak (coupling), the power is wasted.
○ Good length of hip that matches the shoulder angle for power and balance.
○ Strong stifles with well-placed hocks to be able to:
§ Get down in front of a cow and hold themselves in balance.
§ Hold the sliding stop and travel straight
§ Balance on the hind end in the spin and roll back
§ And to be able to do that job for a lifetime without breaking down.
○ Good strong feet with thick walls well back into the quarter. A good cup to the foot with a well-developed digital cushion.

- Agility. I need a horse to be able to move his feet. On the ranch or in the show pen, sometimes situations fall apart quickly. I need a horse that can get out of his own way and get to the right spot right now! I will work to make him soft so I can place each foot exactly where I need it, but if he is already naturally cat-like, it makes that job much easier on both of us!

- Cow Sense. I need a horse that is naturally curious and bold. One that wants to hook on. If a horse is hooked on a cow, they can react so much faster than you reading the cow and trying to get your horse there in time. When your horse has cow, you have a partner that makes the work easier, instead of a tool you have to work.

- Speed. Morgans used to be known for speed. That has fallen by the wayside as other breeds have been developed for that. But you still need speed in a Ranch horse or a Western Performance horse. Sometimes you have to work that spring heifer with a kink in her tail and a high head. You better have all the horse you need to get after her and teach that heifer to behave herself!

I would love to hear from everyone else about what you are focusing on and why. Even if you are not a breeder, share what you are looking for in a sale horse or a prospect.

Memories of one of my good friends. This was Phil. She was half Morgan half QH. I took these pics of her when she was 3 years old back in 2001. I learned so much from this horse. She was tough as nails and yet so kind and giving. She was one of a kind! We did everything together. We raced, climbed mountains, ran into bears, learned to work cows, learned to rope, did parades, and loved to gallop down mountain paths and jump anything in our way! I lost her to colic in 2016. Can't say I have ever really gotten over that.

Barefoot Trimming Classes:
I will be starting some barefoot trimming classes next week. There will be classroom time and in the field classes. We will be meeting Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5-7. Cost will be $40 per class. I will also be videoing the classes and those will be available for the same price.
These classes are geared toward teaching you to be a successful barefoot trimmer, either for the public or just for your own herd. I would also encourage horse owners that want to know more about their horse's feet to attend. Everyone is welcome!
Message me if you are interested.

Name: NR Mighty Mouse
Parents: (Futurity Cobras Promise x Gwenida Gem)
Pedigree Link: https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/nr+mighty+mouse
Born: 1997
Age: 24 years old
S*x: Stallion
Height: 14 hands
Training: Broke using horse, cow work, lesson horse, parades
Color: Bay
Location: Central Oklahoma
Bloodlines: 99.6% Foundation, 16 crosses to Headlight Morgan, 7 crosses to Flyhawk
Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JROPzwAvx7Y&t=4s

Mouse is my senior stallion and my close friend. He was bred by Kathy Nyborg of NR Morgans in Pinehurst, ID. His pedigree is a mixture of Government, Brunk, and Western breeding. On the sire's side, he goes back to Ulysses through the tail-male line through UVM Promise and Orcland Vigildon. Ulysses was a government bred stallion produced from the famous Bennington x Artemisia cross. He was 15.3, 1100lbs and of good using type. UVM Promise was a very famous show horse. He was small (14.1H) but according to observers of the time, he was always full of energy and charisma. Mouse also has 3 crosses to Mr Breezy Cobra, 4 crosses to Senator Graham, and 1 cross to Jubilee Joy on the sire side. These are all solid Brunk bred horses. Mr Breezy Cobra's sire, The Airacobra, was a full sibling to Jubilee Joy. They were from the famous Flyhawk x Sentola cross. Mouse has 7 crosses to Flyahwak and 4 crosses to Sentola.
Mostly Western breeding predominates on the dam's side. Mouse has 2 crosses to Rockfield, 9 crosses to Linsley, 2 crosses to Sonfield, and 2 crosses to Tehachapi Allan. Rockfield was the major sire for the Shawalla program in Walla Walla, WA. He was 15.1h, 1200lbs, and of good using type. Clarence Shaw would show him in the summer and then saddle him up in the fall for hunting and pack trips in the mountains. Linsley was bred by the US Government farm and was used by Elmer Brown of Kansas. He was 15h and 1100lbs and is one of the mainstays in a good western working pedigree. Sonfield was bred by the US Government farm and purchased by Roland Hill of California. He used him extensively as a ranch horse and as a sire of ranch horses. Tehachapi Allan was bred by Roland Hill of California and used as a remount stallion in Kansas. He was 15.1h and 1100lbs. Another cornerstone of a good Western Working pedigree.
Mouse's AGR: Rockfield 20%, UVM Promise 21%, Mr Breezy Cobra 13%, Tehachapi Allan 8%
Mouse has produced 28 foals to date. Many of them are 5 years old and younger. Some performance records for the older offspring are:
Hazelrun Mighty Max (3/4 Morgan) - Multiple wins in Hunter eq, Hunter over fences, and 25 mile Endurance rides
Hazelrun Phil's Independence (3/4 Morgan) - Proven ranch horse used for roping, sorting, and working bulls
R-2 Black Jack - 2008 Reining horse champion at Grand Nationals
Trial By Fire (half morgan) - 1st in 2' jumpers, reserve champion in 2'6" jumpers, 1st in Hunter eq
Mouse's most outstanding trait is his temperament. He is focused, kind, extremely willing, intelligent, careful, and has enough try for 5 horses. We have done everything from parades, to giving kids their first riding lessons, to working cows. He has never said no to anything I have pointed him towards! He also possesses the athleticism of a cat. He is amazingly flexible and moldable but has the power from behind to really push off and drive. He consistently passes his temperament and athleticism onto his foals. This has allowed his offspring to excel at many different activities and show their Morgan versatility.

Anatomy of the equine hoof:

Here is some internal anatomy and physiology of the hoof.

Coffin Bone: This bone is also referred to as P3. It is the bone that sits down inside the hoof capsule. When a veterinarian talks about a horse having "rotation" during a founder episode, this is the bone they are describing. I would like you to notice that the front third of the coffin bone does not have any soft tissue between it and the sole. This is an important observation for later installments and explanations.

The Short Pastern Bone: This bone is also referred to as P2 and forms part of the bony column that extends up the leg and creates the support structure for the horse. When farriers and vets refer to "there should be a straight line through the pastern and down the hoof wall" they are talking about the proper alignment of this bone relative to the coffin bone and the bone above it, the long pastern bone (which I did not mark in the photo)

Navicular Bone: This bone is a small sesamoid bone at the base of the juncture of the short pastern bone and the coffin bone. A sesamoid is a small bone that is embedded in a joint capsule or tendon. They function like pulleys, providing a smooth surface for the tendon to slide over and also helping regulate tension and stress on the tendon. The navicular bone is embedded in the Deep Digital Flexor Tendon (or DDFT).

Deep Digital Flexor Tendon: This tendon is attached to a muscle in the forearm and then inserts into the solar (bottom) surface of the coffin bone. It is responsible for flexing the coffin bone and aids in flexing both pastern bones.

Digital Cushion: This fibrous pad of soft tissue sits below the navicular bone and the back 2/3rds of the coffin bone. It is the primary means of absorbing/dissipating shock in the hoof. The digital cushion is this picture is fairly well developed. Many of our domestic horses have a much smaller/atrophied digital cushion which causes so many of our domestic hoof problems. More on that subject in future installments.

Despite him taking his sweet time, he really was a good boy. This coming 3 year old gelding is still for sale. He didn't make it under anyone's tree for Christmas, but he could still brighten your New Year! Super friendly and ready start working with his new partner.

Hazelrun Mighty Intrepid: 2017 7/8 Morgan brown based grey gelding. (CW's SpecialEditionSilver x Hazelrun Phil's Independence) $1800
Ta**us is a 2017 grey 7/8 Morgan 1/8 Quarter Horse gelding. His Morgan lineage is full of the working type and old-style lines. His sire has good gaits and is very level headed. His dam was one of our best working cow horses. Used for several calving seasons, roped off of, gathered bulls, and always had plenty of go left over at the end of the day. She poured herself into any task you pointed her towards. She has heart for days.
His other relatives are actively competing in or have been successful at dressage (up to 1st level), jumping (up to 3 ft), and endurance (up to 25 miles).
Ta**us is a sweet c**t with a lot of try. He works hard to please and should make a trusted riding partner. I measured him with a stick with a level. He stands at 14.2 currently as a coming 3 year old ( will be 3 in late Feb.) and weighs 700lbs. His cannon bone measurements says he will mature at 15.2H. Ta**us is a sweet c**t with a lot of try. He works hard to please and should make a trusted riding partner. He currently stands 14.2 hands at 2 years old. He should mature around 15 hands. Bred for versatility, he should make a good all-around horse, for work or performance.

This coming 3 year old gelding is SOLD.

The grand old man! NR Mighty Mouse! At 22 years old!
It was beautiful weather the other day so we decided to have a little fun with the guy that makes it all possible. I haven't done very much with him the past 3 years due to a knee injury sustained during breeding. But he always wants to do something, so I gave in. I put on the surcingle and hung a few sleigh bells on him. All we were missing was the snow! He was so happy to be out and enjoyed strutting his stuff to all the horses that were watching. Please forgive that he is overweight. He stopped being able to eat hay 2 years ago and I have only been able to feed him soaked hay cubes. Last winter I used a grass/alfalfa mix cube. This year I switched to an all alfalfa cube and my little easy keeper has "bloomed"! It's time to go back to the grass mix! But I would rather have him a little over weight with his teeth issues going into winter than under weight!

I am so proud of this boy. In his lifetime he has given riding lessons to advanced and beginners as well as small children, ridden in parades, been to some local shows, chased cows, ponied young horses, carried my butt up many hills in Montana, and has sired some of the best horses I have ever thrown a leg over. His foals are doing and competing in everything from jumping to dressage, endurance, cutting, and ranch work including roping and sorting in the pens. He has the most kind and giving soul, and he passes that onto his babies. I love them all!
