Ingredients:
For the Cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup hot water
For the Chocolate Frosting:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
5 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
A pinch of salt
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
Gradually add hot water and mix until well combined.
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the frosting, beat butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and salt, beating until the frosting is smooth and spreadable.
Frost the cooled cakes and stack them. Optionally, garnish with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.
