Please have a safe and relaxing weekend! For those whose pets are still experiencing anxiety with fireworks there are a few "health food store" (Mothers, Sprouts, etc.) alternatives you might try now that most vets are closed (short of going to a veterinary emergency clinic for medication). We like the very safe combo of the amino acid L-Theanine (Suntheanine) https://bit.ly/31JwVjO plus Melatonin https://bit.ly/3gBYCj1 . Using them together and you can cut the dosage of each in half or lower. Be sure not to use any chewable supplements that contain the sweetener Xylitol as it is toxic for dogs. Also, Valerian Root is a "natural valium-type" supplement that can be helpful. https://bit.ly/31DMxp8 Various of the Bach Flower Remedies, especially Rescue Remedy has been successfully used for pet anxiety. https://bit.ly/31Ijb8V The "Thunder Shirts" https://thundershirt.com/ have been recommended by many of our clients, although not sure their availability at this late date at pet stores. Calming music at the house can help. https://bit.ly/2AsHs7Q Also, keep your pets cool and indoors to prevent their escape into the great unknown. We certainly hope all your pets have a safe and relaxing time this holiday. Hope some of this helps. Mrs. C💜

Dr. Cohen does ultrasound.
This was fun. Dr. Cohen just got a shout out on Twitter from the distributor/manufacturer of our great ultrasound machine for his demonstration of the value of ultrasound in veterinary practice. Thanks to Sound Technologies and GE for the kudos. Yeah, Dr. Cohen loves his even more advanced machine since this video! www.veterinarypracticenews.com/veterinary-ultrasound-case-studies/ #waycool
Mouse moves her tail!
MOUSE (aka Christmas Mouse) UPDATE! As you recall, the homeless pup, Mouse was brought into Dr. Cohen from the Recycled Love Dog Rescue with multiple pelvic fractures, a femur fracture, a tail base fracture, parasites, etc. etc. Dr. Justin Greco, super surgeon, repaired the difficult leg fracture and Mouse has been walking great now several weeks out from the repair. What we thought originally was that her non-functional tail would have to be removed due to the complete fracture of the tail from it's base on the spine and lack of any feeling in the tail. (Read about tail fractures here: dogsaholic.com/care/dog-broken-tail.html ) Just prior to her spay surgery & dental care (a week after her leg repair) we planned to remove the tail but it began showing the very faintest sign of movement so Dr. Cohen took the conservative "wait & see" approach. Weeks later, as you see in the video below, the tail has considerable voluntary movement! With the extent of the fracture, it's a miracle! Yippee! We have appreciated all the donations for Mouse and if you'd like to contribute to her veterinary care, please call with a credit card for any amount to our front office staff 949-722-8152 or an even better idea is to please consider a donation to Recycled love Dog Rescue www.recycledlovedogrescue.org so they can help other dogs like Mouse who would surely perish in kill shelters because they are injured and poor adoption candidates. Thank you to our friends and clients for helping these little innocents!💜
Sunshine

Lap Spay
Cohen Wednesday Date Night. Dr. Cohen performed a "Lap Spay" or a spay done with a minimally invasive technique using a video laparoscope. Last evenings procedure was a bit more challenging because the young Golden Retriever was in a full heat cycle so everything was very enlarged and vascular. In the traditional spay surgery, the entire reproductive system is removed from the dog from large incisions. With a laparoscopic spay surgery, only the ovaries are removed from two small incisions. This is an effective surgery with the same result and so much easier recovery for the dog. Laparoscopic surgery is more expensive than traditional surgery because of the investment in specialized training and equipment. However, most veterinarians and all our clients/patients agree who have chosen this method the benefits far outweigh the added costs. This morning, less than 12 hours post-op, the patient is acting like nothing happened.

rabbit rescue
A man risked his life to save a wild rabbit as it got dangerously close to flames from the Thomas Fire along Highway 1 in La Conchita. The daring rescue was captured by a news photographer who happened upon the scene Wednesday night. The man, who did not want to be interviewed, pulled over and was panicking as the rabbit he chased hopped right near large flames. #amazing

Plastic Recycling Info
Humans and animals share this planet together. Animals often don't have the ability to avoid the plastic overload in their homes. On #AmericaRecyclesDay, it's more important than ever to learn what those numbers on the bottom of plastic bottles and containers mean. Did you know? (We didn't. 🙁) americarecyclesday.org
