When training any level horse, safety is key. That's why top dressage rider Silva Martin chose to install our curved kick walls in her indoor arena as opposed to traditional slanted walls. When teaching young horses how to do complex movements, having the security of our kick walls helps her and her horses feel more at ease since they can learn where to put their feet without accidentally stepping on the bottom of the wall. That's of course just one of the many benefits to them!

Did you know that riding on the wrong footing for your discipline can actually hinder your horse's performance? For example, trying to jump a course on deep footing made for reining wouldn't give your horse the support it needs since it's made for sliding, not impact. Going with a footing company that has the experience and knowledge to create the exact blend you need (like Attwood 😉) is crucial to not only your horse's success, but also their soundness!

Our curved kick walls aren't just great for keeping you and your horse a safe distance from the wall, but they also make maintaining your footing easier! Thanks to the bump-out, your track is slightly pushed into the ring as opposed to being right along the wall. Since your harrow can comfortably fit under the bump-out, you can fully harrow the path that you ride. Yay for no more pulling the footing off the walls every week!

What are the main ingredients for the perfect footing?

1. The right blend of sand
2. High quality textiles and fibers
3. The correct ratio of textiles and fibers to sand
4. The ideal moisture content
5. Air through proper harrowing

Of course it's a bit more complicated than that, but the gist of good footing is simple! All of these ingredients combine to make a surface that is versatile for multiple disciplines, provides rebound and concussion reduction, and gives you a supportive yet forgiving footing. While it's a simple list, those qualities aren't as easy to achieve as you might think; that's why using a company that specializes in high quality footing like Attwood is vital to the success of your arena!

Yeah, we may create some amazing footing, but did you know we also create some amazing bases too?! The type of base you install can truly make or break your arena, which is why it's so important to use a company that has experience with HORSE ARENA BASES in particular (like us😉), not just a random contractor that has done some grading here and there. Yesterday we talked about what additives are used for, so now let's talk about why we use what we do and why it's better than other options out there.

We choose to use textiles and fibers in our footing blends and believe they're the best additives for a few reasons: Fibers and textiles act kind of like a root system under grass, meaning they help knit everything together well while also creating little air pockets in the footing, helping to create loft. This gives you a surface with lots of rebound and cushion while also providing some additional stability. They also increase the shear strength of the footing, giving you some extra grip! We only use GGT Footing textiles and fibers since theirs are the most uniform and consistent on the market, and they're all virgin materials. Though using recycled materials may sound nice, you don't always know what's going into your footing (like carpet backing, staples, inconsistent shapes and sizes, varying ratios of textiles to fibers, etc). By using virgin materials, you know exactly what's mixed into your footing and can expect consistent results. Which leads us into why you shouldn't use additives like rubber...

People typically want to add rubber to their footing as a way to loosen it or make it more forgiving/bouncier. While the intentions may be good, the outcome usually is not. Rubber for arenas (whether shredded or crumb) is almost always recycled. This means that it could come from tires, shoes, and so many other sources that contain metals, chemicals, and even carcinogens! As it breaks down over time, it can create dust that is toxic to both you and your horses. It also tends to float to the top of your footing when it rains, making it hard to keep it distributed evenly. Even when it's mixed well, the uneven shapes and hardness of it can contribute to lameness. It also gets slick when wet (moisture is vital for good footing, so this is a BIG problem)! The lower price point is usually what draws people in, but you'll spend more trying to fix it in the long run. Long story short, textiles and fibers are the way to go!
