With Fourth of July fast approaching Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter wants to offer free pet tags to our community! With this effort we hope neighbors can help neighbors by reuniting people and their pets outside of the shelter during a time when so many pets go missing.

The shelter will be making tags for our community this Thursday 6/20 and Sunday 6/23 between 12pm and 4pm in our adoption lobby.

There will be a short form to fill out so we can make your pet tag!

HITS Hudson Valley Official Update EHV-1

SAUGERTIES, New York – Thursday, June 6, 2024 – HITS Horse Show officials were made aware on the evening of Tuesday, June 4, that a horse in Permanent Barn 9 was under observation and treatment for a possible pulled muscle in a hind limb. Under further review of the horse, the HITS and trainer’s veterinarian proactively had the horse removed from the grounds on the evening of Tuesday, June 4, and referred to Cornell University for testing, isolation, and observation. The horse did not have and still has not presented with a temperature or any nasal discharge.

Did you know how old your dog is when you spay or neuter them can greatly impact their health and behavior?

It's become very common too spay/neuter puppies that are 6 months old (or even younger! 😬)

But is that really what's best for their long-term well-being?

Well, the science says... It depends!

There has been a long term study on dogs overall health and behavior comparing dogs that were spayed/neutered at different ages.

The general consequences is that a puppy should NEVER️ be spayed/neutered before they are 6 months old.

But also that many breeds of dogs shouldn't be spayed/neutered until they are 1 or 2 years old, and even some breeds that should NEVER be spayed/neutered!

The study also shows that spaying/neutering dogs younger than their recommend age has major negative effects on their health and behavior.

Some of the health issues include a significantly increased risk of various joint issues and cancers of dogs spayed/neutered too young.

The main behavior concern with dogs spayed/neutered too young is an increased risk for fear aggression.

This chart shows the dog breeds in the study and their recommended ages for spay/neuter.

Out walking my dogs and witnessed a grown man who could hardly handle his grown Rottweiler. Meanwhile, I had my massive German Shepherd Dog and Border Collies’ leashes in one hand, while they were sitting (granted, trying to act a fool-) and the Dingo’s leash in the other hand (who actually was being VERY good girl and not acting a fool-), but easily managed. This is a very great reason to !

In case anyone was wondering exactly what point I will go to for my animals, and my clients’ pets: it is to the ends of the earth. Don’t ask me how I discovered the best thundershirt for my German Shepherd is chicken forage… watching?

A short synopsis here, I adopted Ares at 9-months of age knowing I would be his fifth home, and that he had developed SEVERE separation anxiety and some minor barrier aggression with frustration from being kenneled. I did not know that his anxiety was so severe he would need a specialized kennel to prevent injury to himself while I’m not home, and lord knows how many interventions while I saved up for that kennel. 🤣 he also has amazing medical management from the FABULOUS Dr. Buscher at Five Forks Animal Clinic (so much Prozac 🥴) his days are FULL of enrichment, training, and physically tiring activities to help encourage the brain melt.

But what was it that caused complete peace in this dog’s life? What was the missing puzzle piece? Chicken noises. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🐓🐥

Are used to ride here and I can confidently recommend this property to anyone! Gorgeous facility with wonderful footing💚

This was my first attempt at “laser engraving” with my Cricut.. I’m going to attempt the dog dishes this weekend! Would any of my existing clients be interested in products if I offered this as an additional service?

Someone really needs to take this kitten. It’s not that I don’t want her, she’s just too high energy for Hades. She’s adorable and super playful, it’s just not fair to him.

Who are we?

I have grown up with horses, dogs, cats, chickens, hamsters, just about every animal known to mankind, and am currently a veterinary technician student. There isn’t an animal I won’t care for! Highpoint Farm and Pet Sitting came to fruition when one of my longtime friends was looking for someone to watch her hobby farm of pigs, ducks, and a flock of chickens so she could escape for a weekend. Of course I said yes. This opened up a whole new idea in my head - farm sitting! Most barn managers and farm owners are entirely unable to visit family out of state, take a much needed vacation, or care for their own wellbeing, due to the demanding nature of large and farm animals. Highpoint is available on long-term notice, short-term, and occasionally on an “emergent” basis, since health emergencies rarely provide a heads up, much less happen between 9-5, Monday to Friday. As stated earlier, I have experience with horses, as well as goats, donkeys, pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, rabbits, cats, and dogs. As an added bonus- I have the knowledge and ability to apply different types of medicinal salves, treatments, and wraps. Do you have a diabetic dog who needs their blood glucose level checked prior to their insulin injection? I can help! Do you have a horse who requires standing wraps? I pride myself in my wrapping skills! I also unfortunately have thorough knowledge of the use of betadine, both on myself and my animals. Do you know someone with a cat in chronic renal failure? Send them my way, administering subcutaneous fluids aren’t a stranger to me!
