IMPORTANT NOTE: The shelter is open daily from 8:00am until 5:00pm for owner surrenders, stray drop-offs, and owner re-claims. If staff is not available at the front desk for any of these needs, simply call the number on the door, and a staff member will be happy to assist you. ws, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County, Virginia. This new facility physically embodies each area's dedication to its citizens and to homeless animals. As a result, the shelter will provide necessary resources and services to the citizens of each jurisdiction in terms of education, adoption, outreach, and animal care. These services are represented by the three goals of the shelter's mission: Rehome, Reunite, and Reeducate.

is 'round again with another very deserving shelter pet who is looking for her forever home!

Katanya is a great pup who was very lucky to have found her foster. She is absolutely thriving in her foster home and we are learning so many things about her. She has a long way to go with her confidence building, but she is taking it one day at a time and is doing phenomenal! Let's see what her foster has to say about her:

"Kat is a very special girl. Picked up as a stray she must have been a terrified young pup - and it shows. One on one in a calm, quiet environment she’s your dream dog. But as quick as she is to show love she is just as fast to bolt from fear. Large noisy things, loud children, garbage trucks, stores - all will send her into an unexpected panic flight mode - and you better be hanging on.

She is and can be the best of dogs. She’s smart, trainable, goofy, playful and loves falling asleep curled up next to you, snoring her little head off. But - she needs a home experienced with strong fearful dogs and one that can take the time (year +) to desensitize her so she can learn what normal is.

She will reward you with loyalty, endless love and the best friendship you’ll ever have.

We know it’s a tall order but at a bit over a year old we think this sweet, lovable, smooshy pup deserves that chance. Is it you?

In terms of who can adopt her, I’d only give her to someone experienced with her type, with a very securely fenced yard, and of course, She is not a-leave-her-outside dog.

I’ll take tips or help from trainers and continue to foster her for now. She really is a big sweetheart!"

This week goes to Flapjack 🐰!

The sweetest of gentleman buns, Flapjack found the best home he could have ever dreamed of! His momma fostered him for a while to ensure that he could integrate into her already established bunny family. It took some time, but they are thick as molasses and are all living their best lives together!

We love when our pets go to knowledgeable homes where we know they will thrive for the rest of their days! Here's a bit from Flapjack's momma:

Today we celebrate National Underdog Day!

What is an underdog? At PRAS, we affectionately call our pets that may need a little TLC and extra lovin' underdogs. While they may need a little more attention than a younger, more spry pet, they, too, yearn for love and compassion. The same love and compassion that they are oh so willing to give to whomever they may call their own.

Underdogs are some of our most special pets and they are always very appreciative of the families that are willing to take them under their wing. All pets deserve loving homes. Underdogs included 🥰

Casey Subaru supports the Underdogs at PRAS every year during "Subaru Loves Pets" by bringing awareness to the need for adopted families and foster families. We are very grateful to have the backing of such a wonderful company who truly loves and cares for their local pets.

It's time with the Newport News Police Department! How Cosmo has not found his forever home is beyond all of us.

This adorable house hippo is the perfect mix of fun and potato! He is happy to have a quick run around, stop for belly rubs, take off again and he's done! Such an easy going guy should surely have found his people by now, but he still finds himself on the searc.

Cosmo was brought to us as a stray, but we do he is housebroken, dog friendly (gentle in nature) and great with everyone he has met thus far.

If you are in the market for a really nice dog, come and meet Cosmo. He would be perfect for a family looking for a family pet that likes adventure, but also likes a good snuggle and cuddle.

Thanks to some FANTASTIC FOSTER NETWORKING, Squiggly is currently on his way to his new foster home! This guy is finally going to get some real time to decompress and we could not be more happy for him!

This week, we highlight OWL 🦉! This beautiful gal was NOT feeling shelter life and we found her "bottom dwelling" in her condo more often than not. Of course, shelter life is hard, but some of our friends have a harder time than others. Unfortunately, Owl is one of those friends.

Of course, we strive to provide the best life possible for all of our animals during their stay with us, so we found Miss Owl a wonderful foster momma, so she could have some time to decompress from this new scary life she found herself living.

Since in foster, Owl has found herself and is pretty welcoming of new people. A stark contrast to how she was in the shelter. A true testament of how fostering truly helps our pets.

While Owl will be returning to the shelter next week, maybe this will help her to find her new home, so she never has to step foot back into PRAS!

Here is a bit from, her foster:

"Next week Owl will be returning to the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter in Newport News VA. Owl is a year and half old and looking for her forever home! Even though she is fully grown, she is only 7 pounds. She is is the sweetest cat, and truly has no aggressive side to her. She is very talkative, and loves sunbathing! She warms up to new people fairly quickly, and enjoys playing with toys and chasing lasers. In new environments she can be a little skittish, but once she is comfortable she just wants to be pet all day."

Hello there, I’m Mittens. I’m a bit on the shy side, but once I get to know you, I promise you’ll see my cuddly side. I love to curl up in warm, cozy spots. My purr, they say, is like a soothing lullaby that can melt away the worries of the day. I may need a little time to come out of my shell, but I promise it’s worth the wait. is 'round with a DOUBLE PRAS ALUMNI!

Luffy (known and loved by all at PRAS as Chucky) and Dobby (also known and loved by all at PRAS as Killian) landed the perfect home and are thick as thieves!

Everyone was SO HAPPY for Chucky when he found this family! He was at the shelter for so long and no one could understand why. Working with these guys daily, we get to truly see just how wonderful they can be and it's devastating to watch them be passed by day in and day out. It was SO wonderful when Luffy boy found his family.

While Dobby's stay was not quite as long (we're SO thankful), we were equally as happy when he found his home! Knowing that he was going to a with another wonderful PRAS pup, we could not be more elated for everyone involved!

Let's see what their adopted family has to say about their new lives:

"Here is Luffy (formally Chucky) and Dobby (formally Killian)! They are the bestest friends who love to rough house with each other and will do anything for some cheese. Luffy loves belly rubs and being the center of attention. Dobby loves being outside and playing ball. These boys are my absolute world and bring me the greatest joy. Also thanks to my favorite employee at PRAS, Beth! She's my mother in law and told us about Dobby when he was in the shelter."
