My FIL’s cousin crop farms our farm for his dairy and he raises Guernsey. They’re listed as a Watch status by the Livestock Conservancy. They have really high milk fat and protein but don’t produce quite as much as Jersey and not even close to Holsteins. So their numbers are dwindling as more and more farms are focusing on production over quality.

ANYWAY, can’t do much with bull calves on a dairy farm so we made him a steer. Not a beef breed but it eats the same and the price was right for a free calf. His days are numbered…

The hens wanted NO PART of my shenanigans this morning. Not even 6 months old and the attitude just oozes from them. 🤣

The reason we named our farm Grasshopper Hill. It looks like we have some more hatches. This thing is literally the size of my pinky nail and landed on our patio door.

After the crazy thunderstorm last night, I’m happy to see the bags stayed on our Iris seed pods! We let the insects pollinate them and out of one Iris bed we have 7 seed pods. Can’t wait to see what crosses the bees gave us!

I plan on doing the same with our heirloom family rose bush once it dries out from last night, and the new buds bloom, I’m going to hand pollinate from the same bush and then bag them. I want to make sure I know the lineage without insects throwing me a curve ball.

It’s a busy time of year! Peonies are blooming, bearded irises are blooming, strawberries are ripening and so sweet you don’t need sugar! And the foxglove I started from seed last year are huge and showing off some amazing blooms!

My first time growing milkweed from seed. I knew they had long tap roots but this is ridiculous! 😂 Fingers crossed they survive this transplant.

Anyone that plans on starting them from seed, I’d recommend starting them in extra tall peat pots. Skip seedling trays altogether! I did cold stratify them and just sat them on top of the seed starting mix to give them light to germinate and I had probably a germination rate north of 80% with year old seeds.
