Let's talk leash walking. 🐕

While there are so many ways to teach basic leash walking, here is one of our favorite ways to start starring board and train puppy, Daisy!

🔹Follow The Leader🔹

The basic concept of this game is to teach your dog what to do when they feel leash pressure. Here are the steps:

1. Have plenty of tasty treats handy and have your dog on a regular flat collar or slip leash. Find a calm, quiet place where your dog can focus on you easily.

2. Walk in a random pattern (similar to what you see if the video). Try to stick to 90 or 180 degress turns.

3. Your dog will probably hit the end of the leash when you turn. Don't stop when you feel that pressure, keep walking. As soon as your dog turns and starts following you, telling them "Good!" and offer them a treat in the position where you would want them to walk. (refrence the video to see where we offer the reward.)

4. Don't ignore your dog if they are walking right next to you when you turn or while walking. This is a great time to continue rewarding them for walking next to you.

5. Keep sessions short, 3-5 minutes at a time is ample time. You want to keep training fun and simple.

Have a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a wonderful New Year from Battle Bridge Canine!

We will be back January 3rd to start the new training year! 🐕

12/23/2024

Our 2024 training year has come to an end, and it has been remarkable.

We were delighted to welcome back previous clients for refresher boarding and lessons and had the pleasure of meeting so many new faces this year.

Watching so many of your puppies mature into wonderful adults has been a joy. The greatest reward has been seeing so many of you living fulfilling lives with your canine companions.

We extend our gratitude to each of you who chose us to be part of your training journey. We recognize that your dogs are cherished family members, and trusting them to someone new is a difficult decision.

It has been an honor to be your trainer.

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!

Reactivity is such a common issue that so many owners deal with. What actually causes it?

There are three main reasons why your dog might be reactive.

🔹 Fear
🔹 Excitement
🔹 Aggression

▪️ Fear Reactivity

Fearful dogs are often reactive in an attempt to scare off whatever they are perceiving as a threat.

Think about it from the perspective of your dog.

They see the scary delivery driver coming onto the porch for no reason. We as humans know that the driver is just doing his job while our dogs are barking and going crazy.

In our dogs' eyes, they just scared them away. "My barking made that person leave!"

▪️ Excitement or Frustration Based Reactivity

When your dog was a puppy did you let them go say hi to everyone?
If you did and you are now dealing with reactivity when they see other dogs or people, you are possibly dealing with this type of reactivity.

Simply put, this type of reactivity is caused by your dog feeling frustrated that they cannot reach what they are trying to get to. Whether that be another dog, a person, or anything else that they deem worth getting to. This is also where you may see dogs with high prey drive show reactivity towards runners or dogs playing.

▪️ Aggression Based Reactivity

This is a more uncommon type of reactivity, but it does exist.

This type of reactivity is caused by dogs who are truly dealing with aggression issues. This could be directed towards any trigger, but the main takeaway is this is a dog who is looking for an altercation or who has aggressive intentions.

Just like some humans enjoy fighting (think MMA), some dogs actually enjoy fighting and getting into altercations.

"But they barked at the person walking past us."
"I can't get the timing right."
"They just can't seem to focus on me!"

Do bad training session happen?
Absolutely!

But what were your wins? Where did you see improvement?

To many owners are caught up in the problems they see.
The too late ........ too early... too fast... too slow

When we are too focused on what we did wrong, it's often hard to see what you did right.

What did they improve on?
Did they respond faster to commands?
Was their heel work better than normal?
How about their confidence?
Their engagement?

Negative thinking can be the killer of progress.

Give yourself and your pup some slack. You are both learning, and that is ok!
🔹
🔹
How can you try to help yourself see the growth?
▪ Video record your training sessions when possible
▪ Keep a journal with notes of what you saw improvements with and where you had issues
▪ Getting worked up or stressed during a session? Stop, take a deep breath, and try again. If necessary, stop the session and come back to it later once you have both had a chance to reset.
▪ If all else fails, try changing your approach. Sometimes all you need is a different angle.

There are lots of ways that leash pulling can be created.

Let's cover one of the most common reasons that many tend to not think of. 👇
In dog training, you will often hear the term "negative reinforcement". Contrary to automatic thinking, negative does not mean bad in this instance. It means that we are removing something.

So, in behavior, negative reinforcement means that we are removing something (negative) to increase the likelihood of the behavior happening again (reinforcement).
What does this have to do with leash walking? 🐕
When we are walking our dogs and they are pulling, they are feeling that pressure on their collar. This pressure is annoying to our dogs, it is something they want to go away.

Let's think about this from the perspective of the dog.
As your dog is pulling, so are you. You are both creating tension in the leash, creating that uncomfortable sensation.

You may pull back on the leash or try stopping, but odds are the pulling on your dog's part will continue if they have not been taught otherwise or if they are determined.

Your dog is pulling and pulling until they finally get to a place where they want to stop and sniff.

What happened when your dog stopped? You probably stopped as well.
What was the most important thing that happened? The leash pressure went away.
So, what was the chain of events?

Your dog was pulling creating that annoying sensation 👉 Your dog pulled you to the place they wanted to go 👉 Once they got there, that uncomfortable sensation went away.

What was going through your dog's head while they are doing this?

"If I push through this mild annoyance, I can get to what I want."

We are quite literally teaching our dogs that pulling to where they want to go will turn off the annoying sensation.

Compound that overtime with a dog who has never been taught leash pressure, and you have a recipe for a dog who has conditioned themselves to pull you around.
