About to bring a new puppy home or already struggling with crate training?

Here are a few tips and tricks on how to crate train your puppy! 📣

The crate isn’t confinement, it’s comfort.
When introduced correctly, the crate becomes your puppy’s personal den — a place where they can relax, reset, and feel safe.

Here’s how to set your puppy up for success from day one 👇

🐶 Step 1: Make It Inviting

Place the crate in a quiet, low-traffic area of your home.
Add treats or a chew toy but keep it simple — too much stimulation can make it harder for your puppy to settle.
Leave the door open so they can explore freely and build positive associations.

🍽️ Step 2: Feed Meals in the Crate

Start by feeding your puppy inside the crate with the door open.
Once they’re comfortable, gently close the door during mealtime and open it again as soon as they finish.
This creates a calm, positive connection between the crate and one of their favorite parts of the day — eating!

⏳ Step 3: Build Duration Slowly

Short, positive sessions are key.
Have them rest in the crate for just a few minutes at a time while you’re nearby.
Gradually increase the time and distance as they relax and understand the routine.

🌙 Step 4: Bedtime Routine

Keep nighttime crate time simple and consistent.
Take them out right before bed and first thing in the morning.
If they cry, wait for a calm moment before letting them out — this teaches them that calm behavior opens doors, not fussing.

Pro Tip:
Utilize the kennel throughout the day even if you are home. Only kenneling when you leave or sleep can sometimes cause complications in the future.

Everyone meet, Goose! 🪿

Goose is here with us for 5 weeks of training, but he is a little special.
This guy is up for adoption! 📣

He’s a 9-month-old bully breed mix with a big heart, a goofy personality, and a ton of potential.

This sweet guy is currently with us at Battle Bridge Canine where he’s learning manners, structure, and how to channel his playful energy in the right way.

Here’s what we’ve learned about him so far 👇

🐕 The Good Stuff:

✅ Friendly with other animals — he loves to play!
✅ Zero signs of aggression or resource guarding (with people or dogs!)
✅ Food-motivated and eager to please
✅ Sweet, goofy personality that makes everyone smile
✅ Learning leash manners, impulse control, and calm greetings

💡 What He’s Working On:

He can be a little over the top when he first meets a new animal or trying to play, but we’re already helping him learn how to stay calm and polite during introductions.

He’s a bit nervous around new people at first, men especially. There’s no aggression, just uncertainty and hesitation. We’re actively working on helping him build trust through calm, consistent exposure and positive experiences.

🎓 What He’ll Learn During Training:

While with us, he’ll be learning essential obedience and manners to set him up for long-term success, including but not limited to:
🐾 Sit
🐾 Down
🐾 Implied stay for commands
🐾 Place command
🐾 Waiting calmly at thresholds
🐾 Loose leash walking
🐾 Heel position
🐾 Settling on command
🐾 Introduction to off-leash reliability with e-collar

If time allows, we can tweak training to better fit the lifestyle of his adopter.

His training costs have been covered, but his adopter will receive all the benefits that come along with training after he goes home!

This boy will do best with a family that can give him structure, daily activity, and continued guidance. In return, you’ll get a loyal, loving companion who’s ready to be your best friend. ❤️

Interested in meeting this lovable guy? Leave me a comment below and I will reach out to you with the necessary information to get in contact with his foster parent.

🎃🐾 Happy Howl-oween from Battle Bridge Canine! 🐾🎃

Halloween is a treat for us humans — but for our four-legged friends, it can sometimes be a little tricky! 👻

At BBK9, we love seeing our dogs in costumes and celebrating the season safely. Here are a few Halloween safety and training tips to help you and your pup have a spooktacular night:

🍬 1. Watch the treats!
Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free candy), and raisins are toxic to dogs. Keep candy bowls and treat bags out of reach — and reward your pup with their favorite dog-safe snacks instead.

🎭 2. Choose comfort over costume.
If your dog enjoys dressing up, make sure their costume fits comfortably and doesn’t block vision, hearing, or breathing. Always do a short “dress rehearsal” before the big night to make sure your dog feels confident and calm.

🚪 3. Practice “door manners” and utilize a kennel.
With the doorbell ringing and visitors in masks, it’s easy for dogs to get overstimulated. Utilize their kennel or a place cot to help keep them calm and contained.

💡 4. Keep your dog visible.
If you’re out walking, use reflective gear or a light-up collar so your pup stays safe and seen.

🧠 5. Manage the excitement.
Halloween brings new sights, sounds, and smells. If your dog gets anxious or reactive, set them up for success — provide a quiet, cozy space away from the action or use training games to redirect their focus.

📣 5 Signs It’s Time to Hire a Dog Trainer

We love our dogs but sometimes love alone isn’t enough to fix certain behaviors. If you’ve been feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or stuck, you’re not alone. Here are a few red flags that mean it might be time to bring in professional help 👇

1️⃣ Walks feel like a workout (for you).
If your dog drags you down the street, lunges at people or other dogs, or constantly pulls, leash manners need to be rebuilt from the ground up.

2️⃣ You’ve tried YouTube tips… and nothing sticks.
Online advice can be helpful, but it’s not tailored to your dog’s personality, breed, and environment.

3️⃣ Your dog’s behavior is embarrassing or stressful.
Jumping on guests, barking non-stop, bolting through doors — it’s hard to enjoy your dog when every outing feels chaotic.

4️⃣ Reactivity or aggression is getting worse.
Growling, snapping, or lunging aren’t “phases.” These behaviors need immediate, structured intervention for everyone’s safety.

5️⃣ You can’t have peace in your own home.
Constant barking, destruction, or fighting between dogs creates stress for the whole household.

If you've started to feel frustrated or hopeless, training becomes harder — that’s the perfect time to bring in a trainer who can guide both of you with clarity and calm leadership. Always remember, an ounce of preventions is worth a pound of cure.

Wanting to teach your dog to drop? Here is one of the methods we use! 📣

1️⃣ Get a toy that your dog enjoys playing with and get them engaged.

2️⃣ While playing with the toy, periodically take the tug with two hands on each side of the dogs face and firmly brance your wrists against your knees. The goal is to stop all the movement of the toy on your end and make the game boring.

3️⃣ Firmly say their name, followed with the drop command. "Teddy, drop."

4️⃣ Do not repeat yourself, wait for them to release the toy.

5️⃣ Once they release the toy, even if it is on accident, tell them "yes!" and start the game of chasing the toy again.

6️⃣ Some dogs may take longer to initially drop the toy at first. Refrain from repeating yourself or raising your voice. When first teaching this, do not ask them to wait too long before releasing them after they drop it. Overtime you can increase this expectation.

Puppy biting driving you mad?

Here's some tips on surviving those puppy teeth. 👇🏻

1️⃣ Make sure your puppy is getting the proper amount of rest. Young puppies need 20+ hours of rest per day!

2️⃣ Try redirecting biting puppies with toys if you have one handy. Squeaky toys can work even better!

3️⃣ Put puppies who are persistently biting in their kennel or a playpen to keep them from continuing to rehearse the behavior. Give them plenty of toys and chews to help sooth their teeth and keep them entertained.

4️⃣ Avoid rough play and play with your hands or feet. This may encourage your puppy to not only play too rough as the get older and bigger, but it may encourage them to see your body as something ok to chew on.

5️⃣ Reward calm behaviors when possible.

Always keep in mind that patience is key with puppies. This is a behavior that often goes away with age and proper management.

Behavioral problems in dogs very rarely appear for no reason, but many owners aren't sure what may have caused it to start.

Let's go over some of the more common ways problem behaviors start in dogs.

1️⃣ Lack of proper and breed specific exercise
Bored dogs that aren't receiving the proper physical and mental stimulation may slowly start developing problem behaviors overtime to enrich themselves. The enrichment they resort to is often behaviors we don't desire like destroying furniture and hyperactive behaviors.

2️⃣ Lack of proper structure and boundaries
Ever catch yourself telling your dog no or asking for a command only for them to ignore you and continue what they were already doing? Small moments like this throughout the day can slowly feed into your dog ignoring you in the important moments and makes your words have less value to the dog.

3️⃣ Pain
Especially if a behavior is sudden or out of the ordinary for your dog, checking for pain is always a first good step to ensure there are no underlying issues that training is unable to help.

4️⃣ Not enough proper rest
Every living thing needs rest, and without enough of it you may see an increase in frustration or irritability in your dog. Compare it to how toddlers become moody when they miss a normal nap time.

5️⃣ Too much freedom / Lack of proper corrections
Dogs crave structure. Giving them too much freedom can cause them to have to make more decisions on their own, most of which are decisions that are "fun" for the dog but negatively impact their behaviors. Decisions like barking and running up and down the fence, destroying the couch, and resource guarding toys from housemates. Dogs who are unsure that their handler will guide them and have control of the situation will usually make their own decision on how to handle the situation.

6️⃣ Underlying fear / Lacking confidence
Fear and uncertainty are fairly common cause of behavioral problems in many dogs. While fear is often genetic, it can be accidently encouraged and rewarded throughout their life.

7️⃣ Unmonitored interactions with housemates or children
If you are not around to watch a behavior, you can never be sure what is actually happening. With many dogs, leaving them loose around each other and unattended can often be a recipe for bad and bullying type behaviors to develop. With younger children you can never know how they will treat the dog, so their interactions should always be monitored.

8️⃣ Not respecting boundaries
Just like you and I have boundaries that deserved to be respected, so do our dogs. Teasing them, getting in their space (face especially) unnecessarily, and messing with them at inappropriate times can all cause frustration to build along with your dog possibly developing concerning behaviors to stop you.

9️⃣ Genetics
No matter how much training and structure you give your dog, some may still develop problem behaviors. Genetics make up who you dog is, how they will respond to stimuli, and every other aspect of their personality. This is why picking an appropriate breed or breed mix for you and your lifestyle is so important.
