Our 2024 training year has come to an end, and it has been remarkable.

We were delighted to welcome back previous clients for refresher boarding and lessons and had the pleasure of meeting so many new faces this year.

Watching so many of your puppies mature into wonderful adults has been a joy. The greatest reward has been seeing so many of you living fulfilling lives with your canine companions.

We extend our gratitude to each of you who chose us to be part of your training journey. We recognize that your dogs are cherished family members, and trusting them to someone new is a difficult decision.

It has been an honor to be your trainer.

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!

Reactivity is such a common issue that so many owners deal with. What actually causes it?

There are three main reasons why your dog might be reactive.

🔹 Fear
🔹 Excitement
🔹 Aggression

▪️ Fear Reactivity

Fearful dogs are often reactive in an attempt to scare off whatever they are perceiving as a threat.

Think about it from the perspective of your dog.

They see the scary delivery driver coming onto the porch for no reason. We as humans know that the driver is just doing his job while our dogs are barking and going crazy.

In our dogs' eyes, they just scared them away. "My barking made that person leave!"

▪️ Excitement or Frustration Based Reactivity

When your dog was a puppy did you let them go say hi to everyone?
If you did and you are now dealing with reactivity when they see other dogs or people, you are possibly dealing with this type of reactivity.

Simply put, this type of reactivity is caused by your dog feeling frustrated that they cannot reach what they are trying to get to. Whether that be another dog, a person, or anything else that they deem worth getting to. This is also where you may see dogs with high prey drive show reactivity towards runners or dogs playing.

▪️ Aggression Based Reactivity

This is a more uncommon type of reactivity, but it does exist.

This type of reactivity is caused by dogs who are truly dealing with aggression issues. This could be directed towards any trigger, but the main takeaway is this is a dog who is looking for an altercation or who has aggressive intentions.

Just like some humans enjoy fighting (think MMA), some dogs actually enjoy fighting and getting into altercations.

"But they barked at the person walking past us."
"I can't get the timing right."
"They just can't seem to focus on me!"

Do bad training session happen?
Absolutely!

But what were your wins? Where did you see improvement?

To many owners are caught up in the problems they see.
The too late ........ too early... too fast... too slow

When we are too focused on what we did wrong, it's often hard to see what you did right.

What did they improve on?
Did they respond faster to commands?
Was their heel work better than normal?
How about their confidence?
Their engagement?

Negative thinking can be the killer of progress.

Give yourself and your pup some slack. You are both learning, and that is ok!
🔹
🔹
How can you try to help yourself see the growth?
▪ Video record your training sessions when possible
▪ Keep a journal with notes of what you saw improvements with and where you had issues
▪ Getting worked up or stressed during a session? Stop, take a deep breath, and try again. If necessary, stop the session and come back to it later once you have both had a chance to reset.
▪ If all else fails, try changing your approach. Sometimes all you need is a different angle.

There are lots of ways that leash pulling can be created.

Let's cover one of the most common reasons that many tend to not think of. 👇
In dog training, you will often hear the term "negative reinforcement". Contrary to automatic thinking, negative does not mean bad in this instance. It means that we are removing something.

So, in behavior, negative reinforcement means that we are removing something (negative) to increase the likelihood of the behavior happening again (reinforcement).
What does this have to do with leash walking? 🐕
When we are walking our dogs and they are pulling, they are feeling that pressure on their collar. This pressure is annoying to our dogs, it is something they want to go away.

Let's think about this from the perspective of the dog.
As your dog is pulling, so are you. You are both creating tension in the leash, creating that uncomfortable sensation.

You may pull back on the leash or try stopping, but odds are the pulling on your dog's part will continue if they have not been taught otherwise or if they are determined.

Your dog is pulling and pulling until they finally get to a place where they want to stop and sniff.

What happened when your dog stopped? You probably stopped as well.
What was the most important thing that happened? The leash pressure went away.
So, what was the chain of events?

Your dog was pulling creating that annoying sensation 👉 Your dog pulled you to the place they wanted to go 👉 Once they got there, that uncomfortable sensation went away.

What was going through your dog's head while they are doing this?

"If I push through this mild annoyance, I can get to what I want."

We are quite literally teaching our dogs that pulling to where they want to go will turn off the annoying sensation.

Compound that overtime with a dog who has never been taught leash pressure, and you have a recipe for a dog who has conditioned themselves to pull you around.

What is one of the concerns that most owners have about training?

"How do I balance life and training?".

Let's talk about that 👇👇

Most dogs do not require hours of training and play every day.

Not only do most pet owners not have that kind of time (or energy), but you're developing an athlete.

You are creating a dog who is going to need more and more exercise and training to feel fulfilled without dealing with the root problem.

You need a balance of training and teaching your dog how to relax and hang out calmly.

What can this look like?

▪ An obedience session while dinner is in the oven.
▪ Place training while eating dinner or watching a movie.
▪ A mixed walk with some structed walking and some dog lead walking. This gives you the ability to give them a chance to sniff and explore, offer mental stimulation, do some obedience training, and go potty all in one walk.
▪ Basic structure throughout the day such as waiting to exit the kennel or to leave the house.

Throughout the week you can also throw in some additional obedience sessions, enrichment outlets, and some structured play.

And it doesn't have to be every day. Just like us, our dog's benefit from and NEED off days to rest.

Basic pet training should not:
- Take hours and hours of your day
- Require intense daily exercise

Awesome outing with board and train Athena yesterday afternoon!

One of our big goals for Athena was to help her with confidence around sudden movements and sounds. This outing was a huge win for us!
Lots of exposure at the park with runners, people playing sports, and lots of kids playing on the playgrounds.

Seeing her confidence grow has been so rewarding!
Good job Athena!

👉🏻Neutrality is such an important, yet commonly overlooked skill. It is a skill that so many owners are looking to achieve.

But how do we build neutrality?
〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️
🔹Proper Socialization - By exposing your dog to various environments, people, animals, and experiences we are helping them become accustomed to new and possibly exciting things.

🔹Desensitization- By slowly exposing your dog to different environments, we can help them feel more confident and comfortable in situations when they may have been previously anxious.

🔹Positive Reinforcement- Our dogs want to do things that they enjoy. By finding ways to keep their experience more positive, we can encourage them to repeat desired behaviors.

🔹Calm Leadership - Many dogs will mirror what you show them. By maintaining a calm and confident demeanor, we can help guide our dogs through situations where they may normally struggle.

🔹Mental and Physical Exercise- By ensure that your dog’s mental and physical needs are met, we can decrease the likelihood of certain problem behaviors.

🔹Obedience - Although we do not what to rely on obedience, it can help us maintain control and give us a behavior to fall back onto if needed.

How much exercise does your dog get?🐕

Exercise is a crucial part of any dog’s mental and physical wellbeing and is a huge part of our day to day life here at BBK9.
Why is exercise so important?

▪️Physical Health: Regular exercise helps reduce the risk of obesity, arthritis, and other related diseases. It helps maintain a healthy weight, boost cardiovascular health, and helps keep muscles strong.

▪️Bonding: What’s a better way to build a fun and engaging relationship with your dog other than appropriate play?

▪️Mental Health: Dogs need engagement to be fulfilled. Exercise can satisfy this need. Actives such as running, problem solving, and exploring can help reduce the chance of boredom and destructive behaviors.

▪️Behavioral Health: Exercise helps reduce restlessness and helps maintain energy levels. Dogs who are exercised appropriately are more likely to be calmer in the home, reducing the likelihood of problem behaviors such as digging, barking, and other destructive behaviors.
