Gold Leaf Retrievers Gold Leaf Retrievers is a full-time training kennel. Training programs include: Obedience Training, I was raised on a family farm in southeastern North Carolina.

The farm lifestyle has taught me strong work ethics which include being honest and respecting people, nature, and definitely animals. I have had the opportunity to learn a lot about training dogs in the last 19 years. One thing that I learned immediately is that you have got to have respect for your dog without respect you will never be able to work as a team. I graduated from East Carolina Univer

sity in the spring of 1991 with a BS in Industrial Technology. After looking for a job for a couple of months, I returned home to work on the family farm where I later became a partner in the to***co business . However, all of my spare time and off-season farming time was spent on training my own personal hunting dogs, which I titled Master Hunters. After years of farming and experiencing a lot of success in the retriever training field, I decided to pursue my passion professionally. I trained my first Labrador retriever in 1996, a black female I bought from Black River Retrievers. Her name is Layce and one of the best dogs I have ever hunted beside. In 1999, I decided it was time for another dog. I read about a litter in the newspaper, after talking and visiting with the litter owner I bought Trouble. While training him, I realized at the age of 6 months that I had something special. Researching the internet I found out about AKC hunt tests. Being a little skeptical I went to a trial, and was immediately hooked. Four years later this newspaper dog was North Carolina's first GRHRCH/MH. I am very thankful that Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH) Sin Lake's Big Time Trouble MH picked me. I decided to take my passion to the next level and began taking client dogs in '04. Here at Gold Leaf Retrievers we have qualified over 80% of our dogs since fall of 04'. Juan Rosas joined me in March 05', and has been a very important part of our program. He has more than 8 year's of field trial experience. Juan is known by many as one of the best young dog trainers on the east coast. Because of Juan we are running a limited number of AKC Field Trial qualifying and derby events. I have been married to my wife, Laura, for 25 years. We have three children. Haley, our oldest daughter, is 23; Hannah, our middle daughter, is 21; and Caden, our son is 18 years old.

Gold Leaf Retrievers had a great ending to the 2024 year.

Lumber River Retriever Club Field Trial:
Lil Mac’s Retrieving Honcho— "Rett" placed 2nd in the Derby. Rett is owned by Ronnie Stainback.
Deep Run Calculated Rysk— "Cal" won 1st place in the derby. Cal won 2 derbies this fall with a total of 13 derby points in 6 events making the NDL. Cal is owned by Phyllis Giroux DVM.

Cape Fear Retriever Club:
Star Lab’s Rush to Excellence—"Rush" placed 2nd in the Qualifying making him QAA. Rush is owned by Laurice Williams.

Palmetto Retriever Club: We had 3 dogs to finish their Master Titles.
Creek Bottom’s Black Ice "Teal" owned by Stevie Stewart.
Starlin Swamps Yippee-Ki- Yay MH. "Ki" is owned Stephen Dorman.
Cape Fear Back to the Future MH “Marti” owned by Doug Turner.

Gold leaf retrievers has started off the fall season with some derby placements. Both dogs have ran three derbies and placed in all. Deep Run Calculated Rysk (Cal) won the derby at Old Dominion Retriever Club. A few weeks ago, he placed 4th at South Jersey Retriever Club and 3rd at Ohio Valley Retriever Club. Cal has 8 pts in his first three trials, he is owned by Phyliss Giroux, DVM. Gold Leaf's Paint the Town (Annie) also ran her first three derbies placing in all three. She got 2nd at Old Dominion Retriever Club, 4th at Ohio Valley Retriever Club and 3rd at South Jersey Retriever Club. Annie is owned by Phil Calton.

Last and certainly not least, my favorite blue ribbon of the weekend is my new Blue Ribbon Granddaughter.

Gold Leaf Retrievers did well last weekend. Chi-Town Flirt placed first in the Derby at Blue Ridge Retriever Club’s Spring trial last weekend. Molly is owned by Robert Hodge. The win followed her second place at Tarheel Retriever Club’s Derby giving her 8 points in her last 2 trials. Luke owned is owned by Alvin Hatcher. Luke was the 2021 National Field Champion. Luke has 7 all age wins and his record speaks for itself.

Gold Leaf's Flawless Accuracy (Retta) earned 20 Derby points with 2 wins and 2 seconds. Retta also ran 4 Qualifying. Her first was a Reserved Jam before she was 2 years old. Her next 3 were 1st place, 4th place, and 1st place to give her, her QA2 title. She is now running all age stakes and making very good progress. Retta has also ran 3 Master Test where she is 3 for 3 and will finish her title this Fall. Retta is a family dog/hunting dog.

Gold Leaf Retrievers had a really good weekend at Cape Fear Retriever club. On Cruze Control QA2 MH got second in the open. Cruze is owned by Phil Calton. Gold Leaf’s Sweetest Girl in Town “Roxy” won the Qualifying and is now QA2. She is owned by Robert Hodge. We had a great start to the 2024 season! Troublesome Fowl Weather Pending “Gail”won the Tall Pines Retriever Club derby. This is Gail’s second win and puts her on the National Derby List. Congratulations to owner Lin Kern. “Molly” Gold Leaf’s Chi-Town Flirt got a Jam in the same derby and she is owned by Robert Hodge. Goldleaf’s Flawless Accuracy “Retta” won the Southwest Georgia Qualifying she is ow ed by Caden Wilson. This is her second qualifying win which makes QA2. Thanks to all involved in putting on test and the judges for volunteering their time. We have been extremely blessed.
