Caring Hands Humane Society Caring Hands Humane Society is a 501c3 registered organization. We are a small humane society dedicated to finding a home for every animal entrusted to us.

We have reached the goal of being a “no kill community” in 2016 and have continued on that path every year since. We are committed to keeping that status every year from here out. A “No Kill Community” is an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals even when the shelter is full, reserving euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety. Du

ring 2016, Caring Hands reached the goal with 90.42% and improved during 2017 to 93.1%. In 2018, we further increased that percentage to 95.66%! Behind those statistics are thousands of individual stories with happy endings because of your help! So many times when our resources were stretched to the limit, you came forward and brought food for the animals so they did not go hungry. You donated blankets so they were not cold. You gave them toys so they could have a little joy during their stay here. You saved their lives by providing foster homes until a kennel opened up or until they found their forever home. You sponsored their transport fees so they could go to rescues. You’ve supported us in our endeavors every time we have asked for your help. The companion animals here cannot speak, so on their behalf, we say thank you! The truth is, a shelter cannot achieve “no kill” status on its own. It takes a community. To find out how to take the next steps towards saving each and every animal, visit our volunteer, fostering, memberships, or donations pages. Remember, lives are saved one at a time!

Zeke didn’t come to us because he was unwanted... He came from a loving home whose owner faced unexpected health changes and had to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender both of their dogs. When Zeke arrived, he had a stubborn cough. We ruled out heartworm and moved quickly to our veterinarian, who began treating him for kennel cough. But when the cough wouldn’t fade, we took chest X-rays to rule out heart enlargement and congestive heart failure.

What we found instead was scar tissue that looked like pneumonia. We tried stronger, long-term antibiotics and steroids. Three weeks later, repeat X-rays showed the same results. That’s when the doctor concluded Zeke was likely living with asthma. The weeks of testing, treatment, and stress kept him in the shelter far longer than any senior dog should have to endure. A large, older dog with ongoing medical needs... Zeke had the odds stacked against him.

And then, just when he needed it most, a family walked back through our doors. They had adopted Zeke’s little terrier brother and came looking for a companion. Despite the trial-and-error of managing Zeke’s stress and asthma, they welcomed him home. Now, he’s settling in with his brother again, finally able to breathe a little easier.

Stories like Zeke’s are why we’re fundraising $10,000 this month... to help cover the medical and operational costs that give animals like him a second chance. Zeke’s care alone totaled more than $700. Thanks to generous supporters, we’re already over one-third of the way to our goal. If you believe animals like Zeke deserve care and a chance to heal, please donate today. 🤎

Join Frank and our team in celebrating our veterans... Thank you to all who have served! Caring Hands offers a $50 discount on adoptions to any active military and veterans, not just today... but all year long! **Adopters must present a military ID during the time of adoption.

Did you know that shelter dogs are just as qualified as any other dog to be trained to be service dogs? There are organizations that work with shelters to find proper candidates to help veterans in many ways, including aiding with:
🔴Stress and anxiety
⚪️Depression
🔵Social reintegration
🔴Restoring confidence

Caring Hands has in the past worked with these types of organizations by waiving fees on shelter dogs that would be undergoing training to provide these services. If your organization assists veterans and would like to partner, please give us a call!

When Rose first arrived at the shelter, she seemed perfectly healthy. But during her routine testing, we got unexpected news... Rose was faintly heartworm positive. 💔

Even though Rose showed no symptoms, she needed treatment....a long process that required 30 days of antibiotics, strict kennel rest, two large injections in her back, and weeks without her usual play groups or Adventure Tails outings.

Her treatment also prolonged her stay at the shelter and required special housing to keep her calm and safe during recovery. The cost quickly added up $300 just for a single box of Diroban injections, and about $600 total for her full course of care.

Probably 10 different applications were submitted for her, but she wasn't able to go home due to the heartworm treatment... Through it all, Rose stayed gentle and trusting, even when she was clearly in pain. Every bit of that care was worth it to see her healing and headed home. 💚

Help us recover the cost of Rose’s treatment and continue giving animals like her the Gift of Healing.

PLEASE NOTE: Heartworm is a serious, potentially life-threatening disease that could have easily been prevented with regular monthly preventatives. Rose was lucky to have a very faint trace of heartworms.

Recently, Feline Mycoplasma has been detected in Kansas communities. We treated 50 cats with mycoplasma over the summer and early fall, and thankfully none in our shelter are known to have it currently. It took our cats 4-6 weeks to recover... as many required multiple rounds of antibiotics.

We want our community to understand that while we never want to turn away animals, sometimes the safest and best choice is to avoid bringing cats to the shelter... but instead taking them to see a veterinarian.

Mycoplasma can spread easily between animals, especially in multi-pet homes and shelters. If your cat goes outdoors or interacts with community cats, please watch closely for any signs of illness and seek veterinary care if you notice changes in behavior, appetite, or energy levels. We're fundraising to recover the cost of testing and antibiotics for the 50 cats treated this year. Help us reach our goal! This month, we’re working to raise $10,000 to support the medical and general care of our animals. Every contribution helps us continue providing treatment, prevention, and education for pets.

At Caring Hands, part of our mission is to educate our community, because when we work together, we can make Harvey County and the surrounding areas safer and healthier for every animal.

Unlock Holiday Cheer with the 7 Saturdays of Christmas! 🎄🎅☃🎁❄️🐾

Tomorrow, November 8th, is the start of Newton's Annual Taste of Christmas! We are proud to be a participating business this year. Come get your puzzle piece, grab a treat and take a stroll through the shelter and visit our adoptable pets!🐾

Bean is one of several pets who have been patiently waiting for their forever home for far too long! If you can't adopt, give the gift of giving this holiday season and sponsor an adoptable CHHS pet! This means if an animal is sponsored they get to go home for free with a loving family. 💝

When Kakashi first came to us, we weren’t sure what was wrong with his eye... maybe an infection, maybe an ulcer. What we did know was that this tiny kitten was in pain. We started antibiotics and eye ointments right away, but after several days, there was no improvement. To make things worse, poor Kakashi also came down with a severe upper respiratory infection. After talking with our veterinarian and seeing his condition worsen, we made the decision to remove his damaged eye with the hope he could finally be comfortable and start to heal.

Kakashi’s been through a lot... surgery, two rounds of antibiotics, and constant care from our team. But through it all, he’s remained sweet and full of purrs. The total cost for his treatment and surgery came to around $700, and we’re asking for your help to recover those funds so we can continue saying yes to the next pet who needs urgent care.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 for in the month of November! Every dollar goes directly toward lifesaving treatments and care for animals like Kakashi.
💕Donate today to give pets in our community the care they deserve.
💕Come meet Kakashi... proof that you can still find hope even through just one eye.

Our Story

Our Mission, through the promotion of education in basic humane animal care, is to relieve animal suffering and to prevent cruelty to animals.

At Caring Hands Humane Society, we believe all animals deserve to be treated with dignity and respect during all stages of life. We always strive to provide the best possible care to the animals entrusted to us and to educate others about the benefits of strengthening the bond between humans and companion animals.
