Making sure your pet has an ID tag or is chipped is such an important issue that the ASPCA has designated July 1st as ID Your Pet Day!! Itā€™s especially relevant around the 4th of July holiday as pets can be spooked by the sound of fireworks and run off. Additionally during the summer months, people let their pets outside more or take them on vacations which are more causes for pets to get loose. Make sure your microchip information is up to date and that your pet always has identifying information attached to a collar or harness when outdoors!

THE REAL REASON REHABBERS ASK YOU NOT TO FEED THAT BABYā€¦

Itā€™s not because we want to hog all the fun for ourselves, I promise. Itā€™s because wild orphans arenā€™t typically healthy enough to digest food when they are found.

Many are hypothermic. The body canā€™t even handle water when its temperature is too low. All energy is going to crucial body functions in that state. If the body has to divert energy to digesting, it will likely be fatal.

Many are very dehydrated. Animals canā€™t digest properly when they are dehydrated. The body pulls water into the intestines to aid with digestion. If there isnā€™t any water to pull from, this could cause a domino affect of problems.

All wild baby animals require a specific diet and sometimes that diet isnā€™t available in local stores. Feeding the wrong milk could cause an upset stomach or worse.

All wild animals need specific amounts of formula calculated by their body weight. The percentage differs depending on the species.

Not every animal can drink from a bottle. The correct instrument must be used to prevent aspiration and over feeding.

Bring me a thin, dehydrated, hypothermic animal and I can probably save it. Feed that same animal before you bring it to meā€¦thereā€™s nothing I can do to bring it back.

So please, donā€™t feed any wild orphans that you have found. Keeping them warm is a huge help until you find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

With the upcoming Easter holiday, there is no doubt that most homes will have extra candy around. Chocolate specifically could be toxic for dogs. Please be sure to put ALL candy out of reach of your dog (or cat, mine knocks all sorts of things off the counter that could be snatched up by your dog).
* Signs of chocolate poisoning usually appears within 6 - 12 hours.
* Knowing how much and what kind of chocolate is key when talking to your vet or pet poison control.

While this may be a dog favorite please be aware of the ingredients it contains. Birch sugar is the same as Xylitol and can be equally as toxic! Anything that states Sugar-Free should be avoided!
