The 4th of July is a time for fun, but it can be stressful and dangerous for pets. Between the loud fireworks and summer heat, it’s important to take extra steps to ensure their safety.

Here are a few tips to keep your pets comfortable and safe:

Keep them indoors: Fireworks can be frightening, so it's best to keep pets indoors during the celebrations. Create a calm, quiet space with their favorite toys or a comfy bed.

Update ID tags and microchips: In case your pet gets scared and tries to run off, make sure they have up-to-date ID tags and are microchipped.

Avoid the crowds: If you're attending a fireworks show or hosting a party, keep pets away from the noise and chaos. A quiet room can help them feel more secure.

Hydrate and cool down: If it's hot out, make sure your pet has access to fresh water and a cool place to relax. Avoid walks on hot pavement and keep them in the shade.

Avoid grill-out snacks: It’s tempting to share treats from the grill, but avoid giving your pets fatty foods, onions, or especially bones. Bones can splinter and cause choking or internal damage.

Let’s make sure the 4th is fun and safe for everyone, including our pets!

It’s that time of year again. Be on the lookout for those pesky gnats. They leave these red lesions mainly on the belly where the hair is shorter. If you notice them you can apply hydrocortisone cream topically to the spots. They normally resolve on their own.

🌟 Wishing Mary a Happy Retirement! 🌟

After 18 wonderful years as a valued member of our team, Mary is retiring from Nicollet Vet Clinic! She has been a friendly face and a kind heart to so many pets and their people over the years, and we are beyond grateful for her dedication and compassion.

Mary shared these heartfelt words:
"I want to thank the staff, both past and present, for all I have learned in the past 18 years here at the Nicollet Vet Clinic; I certainly gained a lot of knowledge. But I really want to thank all the clients I have met over these years for sharing your pets with me. You all were wonderful, and I take with me all the memories of laughter as well as tears. Thank you all for letting me get to know each person and pet. I won't forget any of it!! Thanks again! – Mary"

We invite you to stop by for a come-and-go celebration on Monday, March 31st, from 9 AM to 3 PM to wish Mary well in her retirement! Drop in anytime to share a memory, say thank you, and enjoy some snacks and drinks as we celebrate her amazing 18 years with us.

For those who may have not seen the email sent out from NVC in February:

Earlier in February it was brought to our attention that the Microchip Provider known as Save This Life has closed for business without any notice. As a result of this closure, it was reported that microchip numbers associated with this company (typically starting with 991 or 900164) will no longer be accessible to search through the national pet recovery database, which has raised concern in the community as to how lost pets with these microchips will be reunited with their families.

If one or more of your pets has received a microchip implant at Nicollet Vet Clinic prior to 2022, there is a possibility that the microchip implanted is from Save This Life.

We wanted to make you aware of how you can ensure your existing microchip is registered with the national pet recovery database appropriately.

Locate your pet's microchip number and information that was given to you at time of implant. If you are unable to locate that information, no worries! You can contact us at the office and we can provide you with your pets microchip number.

You can type in your pets microchip on this website https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-search/ to see if your pets chip is from Save This Life.

A company you can use to register your pet would be Home Again.
To contact Home Again Pet Recovery to register your microchip number with their national pet recovery database in one of two ways:
By phone at 1-888-466-3242 or
By website at https://www.homeagain.com/our-services and click on the "Enroll Now" button to begin registration
Registration fees may apply. Please contact Home Again by phone with any questions regarding registration process and fees. You are always welcome to find another alternative to register your pets microchip. It is the recommendation of Nicollet Vet Clinic that you register with Home Again since they are a company we support and stand behind when it comes to microchip implants and their recovery database.

We hope this information helps relieve any concerns over how to be reunited with your beloved pet(s) should they go missing!

After scanning lost pet, enter the number into the microchip registry tool to search for the manufacturer of the chip.
