A Day in the Life as a Vet Tech
Happy Vet Tech Week! Here’s just a few things our technicians do on an average day at the hospital! We couldn’t be more grateful for all of their hard work. 🩺🐾
Jugular Blood Draw!
Something we hear from owners all the time after we bring their pet back to our treatment area for a blood draw is, “That was it? You’re already done?”
When the patient’s comfortable and cooperative, blood draws are quick! This video’s 35 seconds long, and the actual blood collection took < 10 seconds.
If your pet is severely uncomfortable, scared, or fighting their blood draw (or vaccines, or nail trim), we recommend trying again another day, usually with some anti-anxiety medication on board. We aren’t here to wrestle animals to the ground just to “get it done.” Blood draws and other procedures should be quick and easy for all parties involved!
When the client decides they don’t want the fecal exam after all. 🤷🏻♀️💩

Cystocentesis is a common clinical technique used to obtain a sample of urine directly from the urinary bladder of pets when collecting a voided, or free-catch, sample is not preferred. The procedure is indicated when necessary to obtain a sterile urine sample, which is ideal for urine cultures. Urine that is collected by free catch has passed through the urethra and may be contaminated with bacteria, thereby making interpretation of the culture results difficult. Cystocentesis also is performed as a convenience when a sample is desired but hard to obtain by normal methods.
Here’s a peek behind the curtain at how we perform an ovarian hysterectomy, otherwise known as a spay. Today’s surgeon is the amazing Dr. Glock and the patient is a sweet, young dog. Canine spays normally take about 30 minutes — sometimes more, but we’ve condensed it into 20 seconds for easy watching. 😉
Spaying and neutering does much more than just prevent unwanted pregnancies! It also reduces the risk of cancer and several behavioral issues, as well as other health conditions, such as Pyometra. ❤️
Braxton was an absolute champ for his blood draw with Jade and Elyse today! 💪🏻🐾
We run bloodwork on all of our patients prior to any surgical procedure to confirm normal organ function and that the pet will perform well under anesthesia. This helps us avoid any surprises on the operating table!
Many of your pet’s organs are responsible for metabolizing the anesthesia and other drugs given during surgery. If any organs are compromised, your veterinary team needs to know so that they can either:
a) Change their drug protocol to better suit your pet’s needs.
b) Refer your pet to a specialist for further work-up prior to surgery.
c)Avoid the procedure altogether if it is in your pet’s best interest.
Animals usually don’t show symptoms of any internal issues until things are pretty bad, so even if your pet is still acting normally, we always run the blood! 🩸
Kudos to this scruffy guy for being such a good sport for his jugular draw! Our technicians usually prefer this vein due to its size, as it is easy to palpate and usually fills our syringe the fastest! 💉

February is Pet Dental Health Month! It’s surprising to a lot of people, but if our pet’s teeth go years without professional cleanings, they do the same thing ours would... they ROT! 😰🥺
Keep your best friend’s mouth feeling its best and ask your veterinarian about scheduling a dental procedure!
Gus’ mom reveal! Did you guess correctly?
We can only see so much of your pet’s mouth when they’re awake and wiggling all over the exam room! Routine dental cleanings give your veterinary team the opportunity to really see what’s going on with your pet’s oral health.
