Next up for Meet Us Monday is Rebeca. She has been riding for just over 26 years now, and in that time she’s tried her hand at a wide range of disciplines in both the English and Western worlds. From the jumping and dressage to sorting and obstacles, plus showing a handful of gaited horses, she’s taken most every chance she’s had to try something new. Just don’t ask her to rope anything 😂 while she loves any time in the saddle, her passion lies in jumping. When she’s not riding, you’re most likely to find her reading or getting entirely too into D&D, game nights, or debating on which is the best trilogy (it’s definitely Star Wars, although LOTR is still phenomenal). #

Managed to sneak a shot of Alejandro kicking off our Valentine’s Day celebrations. From today through the 18th, we will be scheduling all Sweetheart Rides, which come with strawberries, chocolates, Martinelli’s, and roses. Valentine’s Day is around the corner. With sunny skies coming in tomorrow and through the next week, why not make it a memorable one? Dinner and a movie is always nice, but such a common date. We got a lot of water today, and there’s more due in tomorrow. Wednesday may have a little, but it looks like we’ll start drying out that afternoon! By Thursday we should be getting back to normal, just in time for our Valentine’s Celebration Special to start! From February 9-18, we still have some openings for our semi-private sweetheart rides! During our special, rides will include up to two couples, so it’s a perfect double date option as well. Wagon rides and camp fires will be available before and after scheduled rides, and each couple will receive strawberries, chocolate, and Martinelli’s to enjoy in our beautiful guest areas or take home to enjoy privately. It’s Monday! So it’s time to Meet the Staff again! Today’s spotlight is shining on Dairean! Miss Dairean has been riding for over 20 years, and started riding seriously at age 9. The majority of her years were spent riding here at S&D! Through the skills she learned riding here, she was able to start and train one of the sweetest mares ever! (Spoiler alert, the gorgeous mare in the photos is the one she owns and started herself!

Calling all Star Wars fans! Today for Horse of the Day we have the one and only Anakin! Yes, as in Skywalker. Anakin is one of our handsome Standardbreds and he’s always the bestest boi! It’s been a crazy week, but we’re back with Horse of the Day! This handsome man is Jeffery! This guy is not only the horse of the day, but he’s also available for sale. Jeff is a 15.2hh big bodied ranch type quarter horse who would make a great husband horse. He’s in his mid to late teens, with plenty of rides left in him. He’s safe and sound beginner friendly trail horse priced at $3,500.

Monday Morning means it’s time to Meet the Staff! This week we have a (relatively) new addition to the team! Corinne recently joined our team, with a background in classical dressage. Think The Spanish Riding School as opposed to FEI. In fact, she has a deep love for the Spanish School at Vienna. Outside of the saddle she loves all things medieval, and archery, as well as reading and sewing.

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?
🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice, good quality hay is so important in the winter.
💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.
🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.
⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.
🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.
🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.
👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

A bit of a fun fact, a couple of us here at S&D are not only horse lovers, we’re history buffs too! So with that in mind, let’s start a Thursday Time Capsule: Horses and History! It seems only fitting to start at what may be the beginning, no? Today’s Time Capsule is Bucephalus, who is one of the earliest recorded horses in history. He was the battle mount for Alexander the Great, and passed away in 326 BCE at the age of 30.

Our fearless leader Sonja headed out for a wagon ride this afternoon, and of course Dog had to join in on the fun! Wagon rides can be booked as their own booking or as an add-on in tandem with a ride! They’re a great option for the little siblings who aren’t quite old enough to ride independently yet to get some fun with the horses too!

It’s not time yet? Who says? Let’s shake it up and do Horse of the Day a little earlier today! This adorable little mare is Z-Dun! She’s the steadiest of steeds and always takes such wonderful care of her riders. Z is a gentle gal who can slow it down to let a kiddo get comfortable, or step out a bit bigger if asked to. She’s just happy getting to head out to the big world of the trails!

While Eb is happy just being in a saddle, her favorite things to do when riding outside of work are roping and barrel racing.
