Here at Four Paws Down I offer positive dog training for all breeds and ages. Consultations are available by appointment for those who are unsure at which level of training to begin their pet or have questions regarding the training curriculum and/or behavior modification training. You may contact me, Toni Skinner, at (757) 235-5521 or via email [email protected] with any questions or to

schedule a consultation. So many people struggle with obedience training and deal with behavioral issues that can be addressed with training, understanding, consistency and committment. I love to see the light that comes on when pet owners make break throughs with their dogs. Especially those owners that in the past have simply "settled" for certain behaviors or lack of training with their pets. I encourage the entire household to participate in the training of your four legged family member. Consistency is going to be one of the main keys to you and your pet's success!

I so thankful that my babies aren’t afraid of fireworks….cause it sounds like the Wild West out there right now. My heart goes out to all the pet owners with dogs who are terrified of fireworks and who are struggling to get through this day.

Gracie is horrible for nail trims. Cutting her nails is like wrestling an alligator. I normally do them myself to keep her from the added stress of a stranger man handling her. But last time she was so horrible I vowed never to cut her nails again. Had them do it at the vet today. This girl came back to the exam room looking like she just got done fighting for her life 😭I laughed so hard 😂🤣🤣

My Daycare dogs got picked up early. I was all excited to have the rest of my day free….Now me and my dogs are pacing around the house and don’t know what to do with ourselves. 🤦🏽‍♀️😭

The people that I am referring to in this post, know who they are….

One of my specialties in Dog Training, is working with fearful, timid and reactive dogs. I have plenty of success stories to back this up. I’ve had dogs brought to me that could not even be around other dogs due to being fearful or reactive. Those dogs are now, confident dogs who thrive no matter where they are. I see 2 different types of clients. Those that listen to my assessment of their pups and follow through with with my recommendations….these are the clients whose pups succeed and thrive. Then there are the clients who listen to my assessment but do NOT follow through with my recommendations. Mind you, the recommendation is not always for Dog Training. More often than not, I recommend starting with short daycare days….usually starting with just 2 hours on less busy days. I am essentially still training and conditioning their pup, while only charging for daycare. These clients that do not follow through ALWAYS, inevitably have something come up where they are in need of boarding. Then I end up with a poor pup who is scared to death and/or reactive. And every time that I see these pups, they are worse and worse. This is so unfair to the pup. A pup who could have EASILY been helped. Why people choose to leave their pups in this unstable state of mind still baffles me. I go out of my way to try to help these poor pups, while at the same time trying to make it easy for those that may not be able to afford full dog training. But I can not care more about your dog than you do.

I say all of this to say, “going forward, if you are THAT client, who has made no effort to follow my recommendations, then find yourself in need of boarding or daycare, I will not be able to accommodate you.” There is no excuse for a dog to have to live their lives in a constant state of panic and fear when there is help being offered to you.

Here is a video of “Coco” from today. Her owner is a new client. Coco was recently adopted and was never socialized by her previous owners. Coco’s owner listened to my recommendations and has started bringing her for 2 hours of daycare. She is already slowly gaining her confidence and will continue to improve. These dogs can absolutely be helped.

This is Coco. She’s one of my new daycare dogs. She’s timid and a little anxious but I’m working on her. She wouldn’t even come to me at first but I got her comfortable enough to come to me today. ❤️ Some dogs just need a more controlled and less chaotic environment in order to give them the opportunity to decompress while they gain their confidence.

Too often I hear people say they’re going to get another dog so that it can teach their first dog. That’s not how this works. At all. Teach and train your first dog before adding more chaos to an already out of control situation.
