🫶 Thankful Thursday! We'd like to include a new series of Volunteer Spotlights, to highlight some of our most dedicated volunteers here at the Norfolk SPCA.

Please join us in recognizing one of our most dedicated volunteers, Nancy Tucker! Nancy is also a prior recipient of the Ammons Award and is an incredibly reliable dog foster parent, known for accepting multiple puppies in at one time. She’s pictured here with her NSPCA alumni, Okra 💞

🐾 Read on below to hear from Nancy in her own words, about why she loves fostering and working with the Norfolk SPCA.

"I began fostering 10 years ago for a local rescue and fostered with them for about 5 years. That rescue closed down and at the same time there was a plea from the NSPCA for a foster for 4 pit mix puppies. So, I got them and that's how it all began. I love this organization. They are the oldest shelter locally and I believe they might be the oldest shelter in the U.S. The people who work there love the animals and are so caring - they pour their hearts and souls into each and every animal. I love working for an organization that really fulfills their mission to save each and every animal that comes through their doors, no matter the condition they're in or how much it may cost to save them. I'm honored to be associated with them and help save as many as I can.

I've accepted up to 10 puppies at a time because they all deserve a chance at life. Fortunately, my dogs are very welcoming and love when I have puppies in the house! One cute thing about the puppies I get - there's usually a "theme". The first pit mix puppies I got were "The Hunger Game" puppies. I've had vegetable puppies (hence my Okra), vacuum cleaner puppies (Hoover and Dyson), gems, automobiles, reindeer, boy bands, etc. The ones I just had all had "B" names."

Our walk-in clinic is open 8:00-12:30, the adoption center is open 1:00-3:00.

In observance of Juneteenth, a day of profound significance in American history, our vet clinic and shelter will have reduced hours on Wednesday.

Our commitment to serving our community and advocating for the well-being of all animals remains unwavering. We encourage everyone to take this time to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth, educate themselves about its history, and participate in meaningful ways to support equality and justice for all.

We wanted to take a moment to express our gratitude for your continued support during our reorganization phase. As we work hard to improve our services, we are currently facing some challenges due to being short-staffed. We kindly ask for your understanding and patience during this time.
Please know that there may be instances where we are unable to accommodate your requests immediately. We are working closely with partners in our community to give you outside resources to get your pets seen. There will be times we will not be able to accommodate your request. There will also be cases that our facility and our staff are not equipped to handle. We are not an emergency or urgent care facility. Your patience and cooperation mean a lot to us as we strive to serve you better.
Additionally, we request that you treat our staff with kindness and respect. They are working tirelessly to assist you and deserve to be treated with courtesy. Let's work together to create a positive and supportive environment for everyone. Aggressive behavior, foul language, screaming, and disrespect will not be tolerated towards our staff. We’re looking after our staff so they can continue to look after your animals.

We're thrilled to announce that our walk-in vaccine clinic will be open this Wednesday June 19th at 8 AM!
Here are the details you need to know:
🕗 Clients can start lining up at 7:30 AM.
🔔 Buzzers will be handed out starting at 8 AM.
📞 We will begin buzzing in clients at 9 AM.
🌟We will reach capacity at the first 40 customers
🐾All cats MUST be in a carrier and NO retractable leashes are allowed.
Please come prepared and remember to bring any necessary documentation.

🐾Our cattery officially reopens today for adoptions from 1:00-4:30pm!
🐾 Remember those puppies we rescued from a rural shelter who had parvo several weeks back? Well, thanks to our partners at Virginia Beach Animal Hospital, Dr. Baker and LVT Chrissy Lovett they are back, healthy, bathed, and available for adoption TODAY!
You can place applications and visit them from 1:00-4:30pm.
🙌 Fantastic news all around! Thank you for all of your support, patience and love showered over us the last few weeks. Stay tuned we will announce once the kennels are fully reopen!

We'd like to spotlight one of our Board Members, Laura Morgan - thank you for all you do for our animals! Read on below to find out more about Laura and why she chooses to work with the Norfolk SPCA.

"I am involved with the Norfolk SPCA because of my love of animals and the joy they bring to so many households. I have a two-year-old dog Zeke and 9-year-old cat Zippy, both from the Norfolk SPCA, as well as a 3-year-old cat Cheez-it. 😊

I am a Senior Vice President and commercial banker with TowneBank in Norfolk, and I have been working in banking in Hampton Roads for 24 years. I have been on the Board of the Norfolk SPCA since January 2023, and I also serve on the Witches and Whiskers auction committee. I attended Old Dominion University and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. I am a graduate of the LEAD757 Class of 2023. I currently live in Virginia Beach, with my husband Wayne and son Carter."

📢 Important Announcement: Kennel Adoption Center Closure 📢
We regret to inform you that our kennel adoption center will be temporarily closed due to an isolated case of parvo with a puppy that was returned shortly after being adopted for unrelated reasons. The health and well-being of our dogs are our top priority, and we are taking immediate action to ensure her recovery and prevent further spread. Out of an abundance of caution we are closing the kennels for a seven day period.
We will post any additional opportunities to adopt dogs from unaffected portions of the shelter this week as they arise. Please stay tuned.
During this closure, we will be continuing thorough cleaning and disinfection protocols to create a safe environment for our furry friends. Additionally, our veterinary team will be providing necessary medical care and monitoring to aid in her speedy recovery.
We understand that this may inconvenience those looking to visit our center or adopt a dog, and we sincerely apologize for any disappointment caused. However, we believe that this temporary closure is essential to safeguard the health of our dogs and prevent the spread of illness.
Our satellite community clinic for walk in vaccines is still open and running every day except Sundays, June 17th, and June 19th. You can find more information on our website.
We will keep you updated for the reopening of the adoption center. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Genny is a valued member of our team here at the Norfolk SPCA. You may see her at the shelter or the community clinic as she works between both locations. She is one of the voices you hear when you call in, and one of the first and last people you see when you visit us! She is the heartbeat of our operations.
