Tis the season for candles and air fresheners. But did you know that many (most) air fresheners, plug-ins, and candles are actually harmful to humans as well as pets? The biggest problem is that they dissipate VOC’s – the same compounds found in paint - into the air we breathe. These substances can cause all kinds of health problems. Some are even linked to cancer in both humans and animals.
According to a study published in the Environmental Impact Assessment Review, testing of top selling air fresheners and laundry detergents “found 133 different VOCs emitted from the 25 products, with an average of 17 VOCs per product. Of these 133 VOCs, 24 are classified as toxic or hazardous under U.S. federal laws, and each product emitted at least one of these compounds. For “green” products, emissions of these compounds were not significantly different from the other products.”
Be careful with essential oils – some of them are not safe for pets either. Candles made with paraffin are the worst, look for ones made from beeswax. To add some natural scent to your home, you can simmer some cinnamon or lemons on the stove or put vinegar or vanilla extract on cotton balls. Try a DIY spray using 25 drops of Lavender Essential Oil, 2 Tablespoons baking soda in a spray bottle.
