October is National Wellness Month🐶🐱🐾! Here at Boomer Veterinary Hospital, we believe that prevention and early detection are often the best way to keep our pets happy and healthy.
Today, we would like to talk about preventing a condition known as GDV, gastric dilatation-volvulus. GDV is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the stomach twists on itself.
We are excited to announce that we are now offering laparoscopic-assisted gastropexies🥰. This surgery allows us to prevent the stomach from twisting on itself before it ever happens. Preventative gastropexies carry less risk of complication than a gastropexy performed after GDV is already an issue🥹.
The breeds most at risk are large, deep-chested breeds.
✅Standard Poodles
✅Rottweilers
✅German Shepherds
✅Labrador Retrievers
✅Irish Wolfhounds
✅Mastiffs
✅Mixed breeds with deep chests and narrow waists
Please note that this is not an extensive list. If you think that your pet might be a candidate for a preventative gastropexy, we would love to chat and determine if they are a good fit.
