Welcome to the program, Noli.
Friends for Folks pairs long term dogs from shelters and humane organizations with state correctional inmates being educated as dog trainers.

Friends for Folks is about hope for people and animals who have lost hope. It’s about the power of love in healing and redemption. Friends for Folks pairs dogs from shelters and humane organizations with state correctional inmates educated as dog trainers. Over the course of about 8 weeks, the dogs become trained and are more likely to be adopted. The program is a win-win-win for the Friends” (the
dogs), the “Folks” (new owners), and the inmates themselves. In addition to the inmate dog training program, Friends for Folks has developed a separate program to help the children of inmates. Friends for Folks is an all-volunteer organization that depends on donations for its programs, to contribute, please GIVE to the Friends for Folks fund at the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma
Welcome to the program, Noli.
Meet Josie! She apx 1-2 yrs old Shar pei mix and is an absolute doll. She likes to play in the water on hot days, she walks on leash well, knows many cues & tricks. Some of her video's are in the comments. If you are looking for entertainment, she's your girl! Josie is graduating from the Lexington Correctional Center and is heading back to Norman Animal Welfare where she is available for adoption.
This good boy here is Sammy. He is graduating today from our Lexington program and returning to his foster home with Pups & Promises rescue. He is available for adoption - link for the application is in comments.
Sammy is still a teenager and is super smart. He could use a home with some patience as he matures to become a wonderful pet.
Thank you for the donations! Your help is very appreciated and goes along way to help our program.
Pictured is Tater, one of the dogs in the Lexington program that will be available soon from Norman Animal Welfare. He loves car rides & people!

"Dogs that complete the program have a higher chance of being adopted. Inmates who assist in training the dogs are rewarded by knowing they have positively impacted the animal’s future."

Another lucky dog that has benefited from the Friends For Folks program. Whoever adopts Phoebe will be a very lucky person indeed.
This is Buddy. Sister Maria found Buddy by her indigent hospice home in Moore, Oklahoma. He went to the prison dog program at Lexington to be trained to join the School Resource Officer ( SRO) program in public schools.
We started the SRO dog therapy program with officer Amber Dodson and her dog Willa. Amber gave a talk at a SRO convention about how dogs can be used as ambassadors for the SRO program to help children not fear the officers.
Buddy is another great example of how this program reaches into our communities to help children.
Adopt Felix! He'll be graduating soon.

"In any given year, Oklahoma's rate of female incarceration is double the U.S. average. This statistic represents far more than just numbers — it reflects the lives of real people. Curbside took a visit to McLoud and learned about a unique dog 🐕 training program that’s helping people find a new sense of purpose and healing in prison.
Nearly 270 dogs have graduated from the Guardian Angels program, which has a 100 percent adoption success rate. Some dogs are also trained for owners with unique needs like the elderly or people who need service animals. Some women in the program have gone on to pursue their veterinary license or start their own dog grooming business since being released.
The Serelda Cody Dog Training Facility at Mabel Bassett wasn’t built until 2018. Before then, dogs were trained in hallways, cells and the prison yard with objects like chairs and a lot of imagination.
The nearly 3,000 square-foot kennel was built in collaboration with Oklahoma CareerTech, which helped the program’s inmates build the facility while getting experience in construction.
It features 10 indoor/outdoor kennels, a grooming area with equipment, office and classroom space, an enclosed exercise yard with agility equipment and a walking path."
We're so grateful to Miguel Rios for the beautiful article and to Nathan Poppe for these wonderful captures. Curbside Chronicle is the best!

Ricky is showing off his skills to the new, shy dogs. Ricky was like them when he 1st came into the program. Building his confidence and letting him be a dog with setting some boundaries has him now a vibrant teenager. He will be available for adoption when he graduates. ☺️
